Malfunctioning heater at Tahoe Valley Elementary draws response from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/27/2020 - 1:27pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a fire alarm at Tahoe Valley Elementary school Tuesday morning. A Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) maintenance worker was attempting to repair a heater outside a 4th grade portable classroom. According to Tahoe Valley Principal Christina Grubbs, the heater malfunctioned, causing smoke inside the unit which is outdoors. She said smoke was drawn into the classroom through the air exchange.
Registration open for South Lake Tahoe Junior Giants virtual summer season

The City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department has teamed up once again with the Giants Community Fund to offer a free, modified Junior Giants Baseball Program for the 2020 baseball season for youth ages 5-18.
The program features a Digital Dugout offering coaching sessions including physical activities, lessons on health and wellness, reading incentives and character development.

Record number of youth participate in Zephyr Cove tennis clinic
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/10/2019 - 9:34pmZEPHYR COVE, Nev. – A record number of youth participated in the annual free tennis clinic at the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club on June 8. The 66 young players were guided by a team of seasoned players on the fundamentals of the sport.
Not only did the kids get to take away new tennis skills, but they also left with a shirt or towel that was donated by Vail Resorts, the parent company of Heavenly Mountain Resort.
Head pro Dave Nostrant orchestrated the various drills going on at each court, with club members assisting with instruction.

The public needs to be prepared when wildfire strikes. The Camp Fire in November 2018 was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history to date. It burned 153,336 acres, destroyed 18,804 buildings and killed 85 people. The center of that fire was Paradise, California, They had held city-wide fire drills and appeared to be prepared.

Since first responders don't want to use a real event to test their skills, drills of these types are crucial to their being prepared.
Tahoe Douglas Fire, Lake Valley Fire, California Highway Patrol, Care Flight/Remsa, Cal-Star, Cal-Tahoe JPA, South Tahoe Action Team, the FBI and South Lake Tahoe Police Department all joined SLTFR and 22 volunteers in the drills.

With the deadly shooting February 14, 2018 at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, many communities are looking at their own schools and their safety procedures to help prevent a repeat of a tragic event.
What is commonplace at schools across the country are drills for "shelter in place" and for students to understand what to do, and not do, in case of an emergency.

As the show got underway Friday, December 26, there was a heavy presence of law enforcement and safety personnel, though many of them could not be detected as they moved about the venue in plain clothes. A drone was also in the air, surveying the crowd below.

STHS student's senior project shows him how to give back through sports

Some students learn to play a guitar, while others do stand up comedy. And some students like Ethan Strain, learn how to give back to their community and work with children.
The students must select an advisor for their project, someone who knows the chosen subject and can guide the student to a successful completion.

Campers will participate in either hockey or football, or have the option of attending both camps. Former NFL players Byron Chamberlain, Mike Sherrard, and JoJO Townsell will join other coaches and players including hockey standout Michael Finderoff in giving kids a solid foundation in the fundamentals needed to excel in both sports.

Students who want to apply for admission to the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at Lake Tahoe Community College for Fall 2015 must attend a mandatory orientation meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Board/Aspen Room on campus.
Reservations are not required for this meeting, and anyone interested in the program is welcome to attend. Based on student demand, there may be a random lottery for available seats in the Fire Academy. Students will not be eligible for the lottery unless they attend this orientation meeting.
