Tahoe Prosperity Center supports Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless - Project Homekey

Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will receive significant funding in the first round of awards for Project Homekey. The funds awarded will support the local community to purchase and rehabilitate housing, including hotels, motels, vacant apartment buildings, and other properties, and convert them into permanent, long-term housing for people facing homelessness and those currently in insufficient short-term housing. We strongly support the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless and their Project Homekey plans.

IRS and Department of Justice phone scams circulating in area

There are currently some scams currently spreading through the area from phone calls from IRS and Department of Justice impostors.

The Office of Justice Programs’ Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) has received multiple reports that individuals claiming to represent the Department of Justice are calling members of the public as part of an impostor scam. The department strongly encourages the public to remain vigilant and not to provide personal information during these calls, which appear to target the elderly.

South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates respond to #IRunWithMaud questions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be two new members of the South Lake Tahoe City Council after the November 3 election. In the coming weeks the pubic will have chances to hear from the candidates both via zoom, in print and possibly in person. Smoke and haze to continue over Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno issued a special weather statement Wednesday, calling for widespread smoke and haze over the Sierra and northern California and western Nevada.

As of 8:00 a.m. the Air Quality measurement in South Lake Tahoe is 82, the moderate range. Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. it jumped to 161, in the unhealthy range.

Claremont Fire near Quincy is 450 acres
North Complex Fires are near Quincy and at 5,400 acres, 5 percent contained

Nominate a COVID-19 hero to win stay at Lake Tahoe vacation rental

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The owners of a vacation home on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe have created a contest to honor the front line employees who have worked so unselfishly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Claire and Charlie McArthur, owners of The Woodsy Tahoe Cabin, are offering a free six-night stay in October at their home that sleeps ten, has lake views from all levels, and is a 30-second walk to a private homeowners beach.

Governor outlines guidelines for reopening Nevada with phase one Saturday

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak has unveiled his plan for the state to reopen under phase one starting May 9, 2020. Outdoor malls, restaurants, hair salons, and barber shops are among those able to reopen with new standards for safety.

"We must stay safe so we can stay open," said Sisolak of the ability to move into phase 2 by the end of May, or sooner.

"The beginning of the reopening of our economy is not the end of the coronavirus," said Sisolak during a press conference Thursday afternoon. "It's still with us, as strong as ever. It will not go away until there's a vaccine."

Lake Valley Fire Protection District helping locals with food and donations

MEYERS, Calif. - The members of the Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) help the community every day as first responders and protecting the community, but they are now adding on a new role.

They have donated money as well as started a program to go grocery shopping for the elderly in their district or for those unable to get to the store due to coronavirus impacts.

Last week members of the district's foundation presented a check for $1,000 to Bread & Broth to help supply food to those in the community who are impacted by layoffs due to the coronavirus.

Placer County COVID-19 update: 57 cases including some at Lake Tahoe; 2 deaths

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. - The County of Placer Health & Human Services now reports 57 confirmed cases of coronavirus COVID-19 with two deaths from the virus.

Confirmed cases have been identified in the following areas - Auburn, Carnelian Bay, Granite Bay, Kings Beach, Lincoln, Loomis, Meadow Vista, Newcastle, Olympic Valley, Rocklin, and Roseville. However, testing is still limited.

Douglas County leaders update on COVID-19 response and community support

Summer driving tips from the California Highway Patrol

Summer road trips are a well-loved tradition for many. To make sure a trip is enjoyable, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reminds everyone that prevention and planning for summer driving may take time up front, but can spare drivers from dealing with the consequences of a breakdown or worse.

“Get your vehicle ready, plan your route, and above all, drive safely,” CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said. “When you are the driver, your only responsibility is to keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and concentrate on the task of driving.”

Golden Bear neighborhood to hold emergency evacuation drill

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is warning the public of aggressive phone scams targeting utility customers.

Drug money allegedly motivated man accused of murdering Gardnerville women, Reno couple

A Washoe County detective says alleged murderer Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman told police he robbed and killed his elderly victims during a 10-day rampage in January because he needed money to buy methamphetamine to support his drug addiction, according to the Associated Press.

Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman was arrested on Jan. 19 in connection with the four murders of Gardnerville woman Connie Koontz, 56, Gardnerville woman Sophia Renken, 74, and South Reno Couple Jerry and Sherry David, 81 and 80.

Column: Nobody should be food insecure

Do you know what it is like to be hungry? I mean really hungry and not just a little growl in your stomach. I do and so do over 49 million Americans who are what we call “food insecure.” It is a feeling that can best be described as a fist inside of your stomach ever-so-slowly tightening until you are writhing in pain.

Having a nutritious diet has a direct correlation in academic success, psychological well-being, growth, and overall health. A lack of proper nutrition is estimated to cause 678, 000 deaths in the US each year.

Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report contains Martinez-Guzman confession

A probable cause arrest report released Friday by the Carson City Sheriff's Office on 19-year-old murder suspect Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman contains a confession under Miranda.

According to the arrest report, Guzman told investigators that firearms stolen from the house of Jerry and Sherri David, the elderly South Reno couple found murdered in their home, were buried in the area of Sedge Road in East Carson City.

Murder suspect allegedly sold property of victims at Carson City pawn shops

The 19-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder of two Gardnerville woman and an elderly Reno couple earlier this month had allegedly pawned several items stolen from the victims at Carson City pawn shops, according to a criminal complaint filed in Carson City Justice Court.

Similarities between Douglas County and Washoe County homicides

RENO, Nev. - Keeping the community safe is the number one priority of law enforcement working on four recent murders in Reno and Douglas County. This was the message from Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam during a press conference late Thursday afternoon.

Two elderly people, a man and a woman, were killed in a home in southwest Reno. Their bodies were discovered on January 16 after concerned neighbors called law enforcement after not seeing the residents. Their names and ages have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Law enforcement continues search for murder suspect(s) in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The investigation into the murder of two Gardnerville, Nevada women continues and Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley urges the community to remain vigilant and to pay attention in their neighborhoods.

During the evening of January 9-10, 56-year-old Connie Koontz was murdered in her home on James Road and sometime in the overnight hours of January 12-13, 74-year-old Sophia Renken was also murdered in her home.

Bread & Broth to benefit from Tahoe Chamber's annual Connect for a Cause

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bread & Broth, the local nonprofit tasked with feeding those in need on the South Shore, will be the beneficiary of the annual Connect for a Cause Charity Mixer on Thursday, January 24, 2019 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Riva Grill in South Lake Tahoe.

Hosted by the Tahoe Chamber, the mixer will raise funds and gather food donations for the group's Bread & Broth 4 Kids program which gives away up to 170 bags of food each weekend to local school children in grades K-8.

Bicycle and pedestrian safety focus of new CHP campaign

The safety of pedestrians and bicyclists is the focus of a federal grant to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for the coming year.

The California Pedestrian and Bicyclist Enforcement and Education Project (CPBEEP) grant runs from October 1, 2018, through September 30, 2019. During this year-long statewide campaign, CHP officers will conduct enhanced enforcement activities and public education campaigns.

Man drowns off shore of South Lake Tahoe

8/28/18 8:30 a.m. update: The South Lake Tahoe man who died in Lake Tahoe Monday has been identified as Robert Hill by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. The cause of death is still under investigation pending an autopsy

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Police Department's (SLTPD) Marine Unit responded to a call of a life jacket floating in the lake on Monday morning at 11:20 a.m. Upon arrival to an area off Lighthouse Shores they found there was an elderly man attached to the jacket, according to SLTPD Sgt. Travis Cabral.

El Dorado County residents who may qualify for CalFresh, CalWORKs, Medi-Cal or the County Medical Services Program (CMSP) now have multiple ways to enroll in the programs, check their benefits and more. Through a secure internet portal at www.C4yourself.com, individuals can complete their applications and annual renewals, submit documents, and check the status of their case online at any time; they can also access their case information over the phone via the State’s secure Interactive Voice Response (IVR) System at any time.

Pedestrian transported to hospital after being hit in Tahoe Keys intersection

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - An early morning collision at the intersection of Venice Drive and Tahoe Keys Boulevard sent one to the hospital.

At 7:50 a.m. Thursday, February 15, a 16-year-old unlicensed driver hit a 94-year-old male pedestrian at the intersection of the two streets.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, JPA ambulance and South Lake Tahoe Police Department all responded.

The pedestrian was transported to Barton Hospital with a head injury.

According to SLTPD Lt. Shannon Laney, the driver is at fault.

Reward offered for information on Douglas County altercation

A Secret Witness reward has been offered for information about a verbal altercation between an elderly couple and an unidentified man on New Year's Eve in the parking lot of Bed, Bath & Beyond in Douglas County.

Elderly man battered by unknown suspects at Gardnerville Walgreens

Two suspects are being sought for battering an 89-year-old man at Walgreen's in Gardnerville on Christmas Eve at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The suspects were driving a black Dodge pickup truck with unknown license plates. One of the suspects is described as a Causasian male 20-30 years old with a beard.

The elderly victim initially declined to report the incident but recently came forward and is working with Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) to find the pair.

DCSO has information that a female filmed the incident on a cell phone.

Tahoe Douglas Fire offers free ash cans to prevent fires

Two Kingsbury Grade area residences sustained major damage recently due to the incorrect disposal of hot ashes in the back yard of one of homes.

A 2014 fire in the northern end of Washoe Valley Drive Fire destroyed 29 homes, charred 3,177 acres and caused the death of an elderly woman after a man improperly discarded hot fireplace ashes.

Douglas County Commissioners to vote on Master Plan update, including housing element

Douglas County Commissioners will be voting on the 20-year update to the Douglas County Master Plan during a special meeting on Tuesday, December 4 at 9:00 a.m. in the Courthouse at 1616 8th Street in Minden.

Tuesday's discussion will focus on the housing element of the plan along with other portions including safety.

Packaged salad mixes and vegetables recalled

Even though there has been no illnesses reported with their products, Mann Packing of Salinas, California is being cautious and voluntarily recalling minimally processed vegetable products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Mann Packing is issuing this recall in response to a single positive result found on one of their products during random sampling by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Over 20 brands of vegetable items from Walmart, Safeway/Albertson's and Trader Joe's have been pulled from shelves are part of the recall notice.

Emily Lauren Torney 7/27/84 - 09/20/17

Emily Lauren Torney was granted her angel wings on September 20, 2017. She was born July 27, 1984 in South Lake Tahoe, CA to Phill and Sue Torney. She graduated from South Tahoe High School in 2002.

She loved the mountains and enjoyed skiing, snowboarding, water sports, and hiking. Growing up, she was involved in most sports, but loved gymnastics and dance. Her smile and infectious laugh could light up an entire room and she left a memorable impression on everyone she met.

Dogs bringing happiness to guests at Barton Skilled Nursing

It's Thursday, and Bella and Sadie are walking the hallways at Barton Skilled Nursing Facility in South Lake Tahoe, stopping by to be stroked, get a hug, a kiss or a dog treat.

The pair, along with owners Lorna and Gary Lefler, are well known at the facility. Sadie, the Lefler's 12-year-old trained therapy dog and Bella, an 18-month old German Shepherd who is a new member of the family.

Lake Tahoe air quality to continue in the unhealthy range

The intensifying Detwiler Fire near Mariposa, Calif. continues to send smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin, Alpine County, Reno, Carson City and the Carson Valley, causing air quality to be in the unhealthy range.

As of Wednesday morning the Detwiler fire had burned over 45,000 acres, sending a plume of smoke due north, into our area. It is 7 percent contained and caused the evacuation of the town of Mariposa as well as many surrounding roads and neighborhoods.

You Matter, I Will Listen

Life isn't always easy and sometimes people just need someone to talk to. Everyone can benefit from some sort of support and it can be as simple as a cup of tea with a friend, a walk around the block or a conversation.

The "You Matter, I Sill Listen" campaign was started last year by Sabrina Owen, manager of El Dorado County Mental Health programs in South Lake Tahoe, to help people be that needed a little support.

Four hospitalized after South Lake Tahoe stabbing

10:06 p.m. update: The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has released an update on Friday night's stabbing at the Transit Center at the Y.

Originally we were told the suspect was born in 1945, instead, he is a 45-year-old male.

South Lake Tahoe find missing man cold, but alert

9:50 a.m. update - A South Lake Tahoe Police detective found Daniel Trevis at 9:26 a.m. this morning on Park Avenue less than a mile from his residence. Trevis was wrapped in a blanket, awake and alert, but was very cold. His son is taking him for a medical evaluation. SLTPD thanks the public for their assistance.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a 75-year-old resident who suffers from dementia.

North Shore agencies coordinate efforts to check on residents' safety

Due to ongoing power outages and damage caused by extreme winter conditions in Lake Tahoe, a West Shore Safety Assessment Operation is being coordinated by a group of local agencies led by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) and North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) to make sure residents are safe. Other participants include the Placer County Office of Emergency Services, Meeks Bay Fire Protection District, Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, and NTFPD Community Emergency Response Team are coordinating a West Shore Safety Assessment Operation.

Opinion: Hot chocolate run turns into mission to help homeless in South Lake Tahoe

She wasn't crying, but she wasn't exactly not crying, either. We were about to get an early season storm, a typical hot-to-cold pattern, and I had been looking out the window waiting on rain to become snow. My wife had gone to the grocery store, and I wanted to know what had upset the hot chocolate run. An elderly homeless couple had been rummaging through a dumpster in the parking lot. They were literally freezing, threadbare clothes wet and icing over.

South Lake Tahoe fire displaces occupants of six apartments

8:00 p.m.update 12/7/16: South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has ended their command at the 10th street apartments that suffered major damage in a blaze earlier today. The loss is estimated to be $250,000.

The unit where the fire started is uninhabitable, upper units received some water and heat damage as the fire spread up to the second floor by lapping up the outside of the structure. The fire did not extend into the attic space.

Red Cross is helping the fire victims with temporary housing.

Suspects sought in beating and robbery of elderly Gardnerville man

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in locating suspects in a home invasion robbery and beating of an elderly man in the Gardnerville Ranchos on October 30.

The violent crime occurred at 12:38 a.m. when the victim was awakened by the unknown masked suspects forcing their way into his Kimmerling Road home where he lives alone.

Approximately four masked subjects entered the residence, held down the elderly victim and demanded to know the whereabouts of his valuables. The elderly victim, who is in poor health, was beaten unconscious.

El Dorado County Public housing voucher wait list opens for first time in 8 years

For the first time since 2008, El Dorado County’s Public Housing Authority will open its Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List. The Housing Choice Voucher Rental Assistance Program (formerly known as Section 8) is funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and provides rental assistance to income qualified individuals and families. Applicants must be United States citizens or have eligible immigration status.
