A growing problem is the people finding whatever patch of snow is available, normally in areas not previously used for snow play.

Camping/overnighting is prohibited in all wilderness/backcountry areas including Desolation, Meiss Country, Tahoe Rim Trail, Blackwood Canyon, Luther Pass and Watson Lake campgrounds through November. View forest order here.

His rapid decline in mental health was caused by many factors, central to which was the COVID-19 quarantine. Jack’s family and friends struggle to understand the delusion and despair which lead to this, when his life held such promise.
Forests, campgrounds and day-use areas to close in California and Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/07/2020 - 12:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All campgrounds and day use areas on U.S. Forest Service land in California and the Lake Tahoe Basin must close at 5:00 p.m. Monday, September 7 due to the unprecedented and dangerous fire conditions and extreme heat, significant wind events, dry conditions, and firefighting resources that are stretched to the limit.
The USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region has announced the following temporary closures and fire restrictions to provide for public safety and reduce the potential for human caused fire starts:
Fire restrictions expand to USFS lands in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/31/2020 - 10:28amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will start enhanced fire restrictions in national forest campgrounds on September 1, 2020 due to dry conditions.
On August 21, fire agencies around the Lake Tahoe Basin banned all open burning utilizing wood and charcoal at homes, parks, beaches and most campgrounds. LTBMU was not part of that original ban.
All areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin are now under these restrictions.
Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe awards 19 scholarships

The club, serving the community since 1959, has given out over one-million dollars to local graduates over the years.
South Lake Tahoe resident tests positive for plague, most likely from flea bite
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/17/2020 - 10:29amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe resident has tested positive for plague according to El Dorado County health officials. The individual is currently under the care of a medical professional and is recovering at home.
It’s believed that the person, an avid walker, may have been bitten by an infected flea while walking their dog along the Truckee River Corridor north of Highway 50 or the Tahoe Keys area in South Lake Tahoe. Health officials started investigating the situation after being notified by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe; Red Flag Warning for Western Nevada

Expect winds from the west 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe will be 2-4 feet. Strongest winds and roughest conditions expected Saturday afternoon and evening, and then again on Sunday.
Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
Crews working on two lightning caused fires at Lake Tahoe

The Alert Tahoe Fire Camera system was active with fire officials able to zoom in on possible problem areas.
City of South Lake Tahoe facilities to start reopening

Only boats with valid Tahoe, Echo Lake or Fallen Leaf Lake seals and a 2020 Tahoe sticker will be able to launch. "Tahoe Only" stickers are available for purchase at this launch site. They will be open Friday through Sunday only at this time from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Only one boat will be able to occupy the dock at a time. The boat ramp will be not be accepting cash and wireless payment technology will be utilized.
Lake Tahoe boat ramps to start opening up for boats not needing inspection

Wind warnings up through Monday morning in the Lake Tahoe Basin and Sierra

The winds throughout the Sierra have closed not only Kirkwood Mountain Resort operations for the day but also Sierra-at-Tahoe. Some lifts are on wind hold or closed at Heavenly Mountain Resort, Squaw Alpine, Northstar, Mt. Rose and others.

Fire officials from the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit were in the area to do test burns for a future ignition when they found the conditions to be right to start their 50-acre project of burning hand piles along Fallen Leaf Lake Road near South Lake Tahoe.

With the amount of public comment and the recognized need to have its own plan, they separated the two.
In 2011, LTBMU started a collaborative group to develop a proposed action plan for Winter Recreation and Over Snow Vehicle (OSV) use in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Fire Fest is returning to the South Shore on Saturday, September 21, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. outside the back of Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe. Admission is free and it's a great opportunity for families to have fun while learning about safety and conservation.
Helicopters will be the stars this year as they land just outside the venue at the Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe. What an incredible opportunity to get a close-up look at these amazing machines! Crews will be on hand to answer questions and explain how they help us when we need them most.

Wind advisory in place for Lake Tahoe and Sierra: Water activities could be "hazardous"
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/25/2019 - 10:53amThe National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory to be in effect from noon Tuesday to 11:00 p.m. Thursday on Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, Fallen Leaf Lake and others in the Sierra Nevada.
Winds will be from the south to southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts 30 to 40 mph each afternoon and evening through Thursday. Winds will slacken up some overnight and into the morning; however, some chop may continue through the night, especially on Lake Tahoe, according to NWS-Reno.
Wave Heights on Lake Tahoe will be 2 to 4 feet for mid-lake to north and east shores.

SNC scholarship set up in teacher's name for locals pursuing teaching degrees
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/24/2019 - 11:10pmA new education endowment has been established at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village in memory of the late John Nemes, a teacher in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District for over 30 years.
This is the college's first teacher education endowment and will provide scholarships to support future teachers and honors the beloved Tahoe teacher who died on October 2, 2016.
Nemes passed on to his students a love of reading that came straight from his heart. John also loved gardening, his dog Buddy, Fallen Leaf Lake, a great glass of wine, and a good laugh.

Many stop on the highway and pull onto the shoulder (well, sort of) and head to the patch of snow. This behavior is causing problems for law enforcement, other drivers and is an accident waiting to happen.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2014, the South Tahoe Public Utility District’s Board of Directors approved a series of annual rate increases to fund more than $50 million in critical improvements to South Tahoe’s water, wastewater, and recycled water systems. These upgrades lower long-term costs, improve fire flow, protect the environment and ensure longterm, quality service. On Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 6 p.m. the District will host a public meeting on the upgrades to the water, sewer and recycled water systems, and the ongoing improvements still needed.

Fire Fest 2018 will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. outside the Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe. Admission is free and it's a great opportunity for families to have fun while learning about fire safety and conservation.
Helicopters will star again this year as they land just outside the venue at the Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe. What an incredible opportunity to get a close-up look at these amazing machines. Crews will be on hand to answer questions and explain how they help us when we need them most.
