Washoe Tribe shares their culture and history during Wa-She-Shu It'Deh festival

The Washoe Tribe spent their summers in Lake Tahoe thousands of years ago, and this weekend they shared their history, food and customs with the public during the annual Wa-SheShu It'Deh festival this weekend.

They currently live in four reservation communities in Northern Nevada and California: Woodfords, Dresslerville, Stewart and Carson City as well as in the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony. Members from the tribe came together at Valhalla in dance and music, told stories and shared generations of history.

The five "Jazz & Beyond" bands at the Fair on August 2 are Sons of Slide Mountain, RVGS Tantalus, Lynne Colvig Latin Jazz, the Reno Jazz Orchestra with singer Jackie Landrum, and the St. Christopher Project, featuring the music of Tom Waits.

Wa-Sha-Shu It’Deh Native American Festival held this weekend at Valhalla

The Wa-Sha-Shu It’Deh Native American Festival returns to Valhalla at the Tallac Historic site this weekend, July 26 and 27. The festival celebrates the Washoe's ancient lifeways and their Lake Tahoe homeland.

The festival features traditional American Indian dancers and drum performers, basket weaving displays, art, and great food. The basket weaving competition features over fourteen different categories. The Washoe are highly regarded for their master craftsmanship of baskets and have had several well-known weavers throughout their history, including Dat So La Lee.

Competitive edge added to this year's Sample the Sierra

Festival goers will have their say this Labor Day weekend as Sample the Sierra adds a competitive edge to the food and wine festival with the introduction of a new award – Best Tasting Experience! Attendees will vote for the booth that has their favorite flavorful creation that includes fresh ingredients that are prepared by a local chef or restaurant and then paired with regional wine, beer or spirits. The booth with the most votes will be awarded the Best Tasting Experience of 2014.

Lake Tahoe Holiday Crowds Keep Law Enforcement and Fire Departments Busy

"It's a challenge to make sure they are all safe," said Eric Guevin, Tahoe Douglas Fire Marshall. He was commenting on the increased number of calls his department received on the the 4th of July when tens of thousands of visitors come to the Lake Tahoe basin to celebrate. When more people come to Lake Tahoe the fire department sees a large increase in service calls.

"Our rescue crews were kept busy," according to Guevin.

Wild Tahoe Weekend at Taylor Creek

The Fifth Annual Lake Tahoe Birding Festival at Taylor Creek Visitor Center kicked of the U.S. Forest Service's Wild Tahoe Weekend on Saturday. The activities included information booths and hourly guided bird walks along the nature trail through the wetland; Master Falconer, Marie Gaspari Crawford, brought two falcons and a Red tailed hawk to the event. During her two presentations, Crawford spoke about birds of prey and gave some interesting insight to caring for and living with them. She also answered questions and had the birds pose for pictures.

Fox & Hound Tahoe Wins "Best Ribs" at San Juan Bautista Rib Cook Off.

Fox & Hound of South Lake Tahoe brought home honors from the May 18 San Juan Bautista Rib Cook Off. Eight award winning rib teams cooked up thousands of pounds of ribs and sauces for the festival goers and judges. The Fox & Hound won 1st Place for their ribs and 2nd Place for their sauce!

Kingsbury Grade Closing to Through Traffic in May, September and October

A year and a half road construction project will result in the closure of Kingsbury Grade for almost 75 days this year and more in 2015. Since this will have an impact on local businesses, residents and commuters, a forum was held on Wednesday in order to inform the community about the impact.

Craigslist Scam Pulled on SnowGlobe Attendees

They knew something was amiss when they couldn't find the home on Saddle Road listed on their vacation rental home contract. A group of 15 college students came to South Lake Tahoe to enjoy the three day SnowGlobe festival, where their time would be spent at the concert, enjoying the town and kicking back in a fully furnished ski cabin. But the lodging situation wasn't as expected since they fell victims to a "craiglist" scam and paid for a rental home that wasn't real.

Out and About in South Lake Tahoe

We found lots of things to enjoy while out and about in South Lake Tahoe today!

The Pumpkin and Pony Festival at Forest Suites had several things for everyone to enjoy. There were local business booths, a pumpkin patch, pony and tractor rides, a climbing wall and bouncy house, live music and two food booths and historical entertainment. You can still catch this on Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.

The South Tahoe Music Department had a rummage sale in the parking lot of the Emerald Bay Center for Women's Health to raise money for the music programs.

Kokanee Make a Showing Regardless of Government Shutdown

The closed gates haven't stopped the droves of people drawn to Taylor Creek and the Rainbow Trail to watch the annual fall upstream trek of the Kokanee Salmon.

Visitors to the creek were locals and visitors and they all arrived via a myriad of transportation options. The Trolley running along Highway 89 through the weekend, which brought many down the road as did bicycles, motorcycles, cars as well as those that preferred to walk.

This Weekend's Salmon Festival Canceled Due to Government Shutdown

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is closing Forest Service-operated facilities and cancelling Forest-Service staffed events due to the lapse in federal government funding, effective October 1, 2013 until funding is restored. Concession-operated facilities, campgrounds and events will continue as normal for the time being. Most forest roads and gates remain open for the time being. The Forest Supervisor’s Office and Taylor Creek Visitor Center are closed. Forest Service-operated campgrounds are closed.

Formerly the Kokanee Salmon Festival, the Fall Fish Festival will focus on the variety of fish species that live in Lake Tahoe and its rivers. In addition to the Kokanee, these species include the federally threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout and little-known smaller fish, such as speckled dace.
