Bread & Broth adjusts services but still feeding the hungry in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/18/2020 - 11:02amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to the COVID-19 emergency, Bread & Broth has made changes to their normal procedures in helping food insecure residents of South Lake Tahoe.
As an all-volunteer organization, they have been proudly serving the community since 1989 and will continue to do so as long as possible through these uncertain times due to the coronavirus COVID-19 health issues.
Starting immediately, the following schedule is in place:

Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/11/2019 - 9:30pmOn June 24th, Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal fed 96 community members who arrived at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall between 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to be served beef stroganoff, sautéed zucchini, a green salad, fresh apricots and a lovely assortment of desserts. Sponsoring the meal for the evening was Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, whose $300 donation helped cover the costs of the meal, and who provided five Hard Rock team members to participate in their Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorship.

Column: Nobody should be food insecure

I do and so do over 49 million Americans who are what we call “food insecure.” It is a feeling that can best be described as a fist inside of your stomach ever-so-slowly tightening until you are writhing in pain.
Having a nutritious diet has a direct correlation in academic success, psychological well-being, growth, and overall health. A lack of proper nutrition is estimated to cause 678, 000 deaths in the US each year.
Children's summer food program starts Wednesday in South Lake Tahoe

Food will be available at three South Lake Tahoe locations every Wednesday through August 22.
Tahoe Chamber event brings in $2,550 and food for Bread and Broth
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/23/2018 - 1:16pmThe Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce's annual Connect for a Cause on January 18 had a great turnout from the community, bring in both cash and food donations for Bread and Broth.
Over 100 people attended the charity mixer at Riva Grill and they enjoyed appetizers and Riva Grill’s signature cocktail, Wet Woodies during the event.
Bread and Broth serves the community with weekly food giveaways and two hot meals a week, and their Bread and Broth 4 Kids programs gives over 170 South Lake Tahoe children in grades K-8 a backpack of weekend food.
Bread & Broth needs volunteers for their growing programs

Bread & Broth (B&B) has grown over the last eight years and now offers the following programs:
- Monday Meal, which is a full-course dinner service every Monday at St. Theresa Grace Hall from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
- Second Serving at Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church which provides soup and a simple entrée every Friday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Clause, Steve Kurek, Jim Plamenig and Gary Wendt came prepared to represent their fellow Elk Lodge members at the organization’s Adopt of Day of Nourishment and this enthusiastic group did a fine job hosting the 94 dinner guests who arrived at St. Theresa Grace Hall for the evening’s meal.
“So gratifying to see the hungry being fed,” said Steve. “We feel lucky to be able to help.”

Vail Resorts CEO gives $125,000 to fund South Lake Tahoe summer kids food program

Thanks to a generous donation of $125,000 by Rob Katz, Vail Resorts CEO, and his wife Elana Amsterdam, “Summer B&B 4 Kids” will launch on Wednesday, June 21, with a focus on helping the over 50 percent of local children who are receiving free or subsidized school meals during the school year.

They’ve volunteered their time as sponsor crew members when the Lake Tahoe Windjammers Club has hosted Adopt-A-Days in the summer. However, on Monday, October 3, Kurt and Laura’s Sunbeam Blind Company sponsored its first AAD. According to Gail Clair, the B&B Adopt-A-Day Coordinator, Kurt, Laura and their fellow crew member Brendan Lockamy were “Awesome, so nice, fun and helpful!”

This is an experience I will always remember and want to do again.”

Thanks to the generosity of Friends of Temple Bat Yam, the dinner’s Adopt A Day sponsor, the diners enjoyed a tasty Mexican casserole prepared by B&B’s amazing cooks. The dinner guests also were provided with bags filled with dairy products, fruits, vegetables, breads and pastries provided by donations from local businesses and B&B donors.

B&B’s partnership with Kirkwood has provided so many meals to the food insecure of our community and has helped eased the struggle many face every day to secure nutritious and filling food.

Heavenly’s Ski Patrol organization provided the funding for the 138 meals served at B&B’s Monday evening dinner on February 29th. This Adopt A Day was a follow up to their sponsorship on January 18th.

Thanks to the “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” sponsor MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa and our hardworking Bread & Broth volunteer cooks, that is exactly what B&B’s dinner guests enjoyed at the December 28 Monday evening dinner. The meat loaf was a big hit and despite big “first servings” portions, when “second serving” was announced, many diners returned for a second helping.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County and the California Emergency Food Link are reaching out to the community of South Lake Tahoe to ensure everyone has enough food to eat.
They are providing a "Free Farmer's Market" to individuals and families in need on Wednesday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the American Legion located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
There is one allocation of food per family.

The El Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, January 28 to hand out emergency supplemental food supplies to families in need.
Their mobile pantry will be parked at the American Legion Hall located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. There will be one allocation of food per household.
Volunteers are needed to help distribute food.

Hunger isn't just an inner city problem. Hunger isn't just a third world problem. Hunger affects approximately 16 million children in the United States with 3 million rural community households being "food insecure."
How can children focus on solving a math problem or writing an English paper when he or she is trying to ignore the persistent pangs of hunger? School work is forced to compete with hunger.
Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort hosts canned food drive for the Food Bank of El Dorado County

Titled CANucopia, Sierra Resort is encouraging guests to bring canned non-perishable foods such as canned soup, dried pasta, crackers, and pasta sauce to the collection bin located at the base of the mountain next to the season pass office until January 12, 2013.
