Food Bank returns to SLT with food supplies and new location

The Food Bank of El Dorado County will return to South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, May 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the parking lot of St. Theresa's Catholic Church.

Bags of emergency supplemental groceries will be distributed to qualified recipients. The Mobile Food Pantry makes stops in remote areas of the county from SLT to Placerville. While in town they will also stop by the Family Resource Center and Bread & Broth to drop off food supplies to those agencies.

Demolition begins on South Lake Tahoe McDonald's

Demolition began Wednesday on the 40-year-old McDonald's building at the Y, making way for a new building that will not only be home to a smaller and more efficient fast food restaurant, but one that is also full of environmental improvements as well as an new alpine-look consistent with the new City design standards.

Kudos: Tip-a-Cop in Douglas County raises funds for Special Olympics

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) and the Special Olympics athletes wish to thank the community for their overwhelming generosity and support at the Tip-A-Cop event at Chili’s which was held on Thursday, April 27, 2017. During this event $2,726 was raised, the largest total the County has ever earned toward this worthy cause.

Lake Tahoe Brewfest to raise funds for Boys and Girls Club

The inaugural Lake Tahoe Brewfest is coming to the South Shore on Saturday, June 10 from noon to 5:00 p.m., and will be the first major event to bring together all of the breweries from the Lake Tahoe area’s emerging beer scene.

The Swiss Chalet Center at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sierra Boulevard will be the scene for the family-friendly event which will feature local arts and crafts, food, live music, games and more.

Professional cyclists start arriving in Lake Tahoe for two stages of Amgen

Tyler and Cheryl Cannon, owners of Sprouts Cafe in South Lake Tahoe, opened their doors Tuesday to two of the cycling teams in town for two stages of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women's Race empowered with SRAM on May 11-12.

DROPS and United Healthcare (UHC) were there not only to enjoy the food Sprouts is known for, but to spend time with media and sharing their stories two days before race time.

Deputy accidentally shoots bear with live bullet in Lake Tahoe

A Washoe County Sheriff's deputy trying to scare off a group of bears in Incline Village Saturday morning shot the mother bear with a live round instead of a rubber round.

At approximately 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2017, deputies responded to a report of a group of bears near residences in the area of Driver Way and Village Boulevard in Incline Village.

On arrival, deputies encountered a mother bear and three cubs. This group of bears had been previously identified as food aggressive and deputies have had numerous encounters with this group in recent weeks.

New format for Master Gardeners plant sale in South Lake Tahoe

The UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe are having their 4th annual Plant Sale takes on a different format this year. Natives and other perennials need more time to grow out of their overwintering slumber so the sale will be held in two segments. Vegetable plants will be sold at the Ski Run Farmers Market on friday, June 9 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (or until all plants have been sold) and the Natives and Perennials will be sold on Saturday, September 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Sierra House Elementary School.

Family Resource Center's 14th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival Friday

The South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center (FRC) is holding their 14th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival on Friday, May 5 starting at 5:00 p.m. at Heavenly Mountain Resort. The community is invited to join them for an "all you can eat" Mexican food buffet, dancing with live music and a fabulous raffle.

Tickets can be purchased at the center for $20 or at the door for $25. Children ages 6-12 are $10 and 5 and under are free. Raffle tickets for chances at prizes donated by local businesses are available for $5 each of 5/$20.

Letter: Lake Tahoe Humane Society needs our help

Our local Humane Society needs our help.

Day in and day out our local Humane Society answers the needs of people who have lost their cat or dog or those who have been forced to move to a place where their pets are not allowed. They host spay and neutering clinics to help with over population and other pet inoculation issues. This past Christmas I saw them giving out pet food to those who were too poor to feed their pets.

They are now facing challenges after their Executive Director Niki Congero was fired when allegations of embezzlement arose when their bank called them about irregular activity on the agency's debit card.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department celebrates 50th anniversary with community party

Through the generosity of the John McDougall Pay It Forward Lake Tahoe Community Fund held at the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, Bread & Broth provided a roasted chicken dinner with all of the fixings at its Monday Meal on April 24. The $250 grant funds enabled B&B to serve 107 meals and provide for 26 takeout meals to the grateful dinner guests who arrived at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall for the weekly Monday Meal.

It took just minutes to fill up Lake Tahoe Aleworx Taproom & Pizzeria Thursday when they opened their doors officially for the first time. South Lake Tahoe couple launches award-winning BumpBar

No, BumpBar is not a new watering hole in South Lake Tahoe. Instead, BumpBar is a nutritious bar with the pregnant or nursing woman in mind, and is the creation of local couple Dr. Amanda Weavil, MD and Scott Weavil.

BumpBar began in 2015 when Amanda, a South Lake Tahoe OB/GYN wanted to develop a nutrition bar for her patients who were either pregnant or nursing. Something they have and not worry about the ingredients.

Scott researched the large nutrition bar market and found there were no options for sale like they had in mind, something people could eat on the go that was healthy.

David was facilitator of the Lake Tahoe Collaborative when a committee was established to create a vision and a plan for the Warm Room. Her support through nonprofit collaboration and in her role at the City of South Lake Tahoe has been greatly appreciated by all at TCH who have had the honor to work with her.

Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe in need of a new truck

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) is need of a truck after a recent crash on Johnson Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe totaled their 2002 Chevy. This truck was vital to the club's transportation needs and insurance will not cover replacement.

Nobody was hurt in the collision.

During the school-year, the truck is used to transport food to and from the club's satellite site, Bijou Elementary School, as well as donations that the community provides.

Tickets are now available for the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra Elegant Evening, a time-honored tradition in South Lake Tahoe. This evening of fun, food, and community will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The ticket prices will be going up to $75, so get your $65 tickets until April 1. They can be purchased here.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary holds 49th annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club is holding their 49th annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration at the Harrah's Lake Tahoe Convention Center from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17.

It started with a wine and cheese party on the second floor of Dart Liquor and it has morphed over the years into one of the top annual fundraisers on the South Shore.

600 people are expected at the evening full of food, fun, dancing and drinking, all in the name of community to raise funds for the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club's scholarships and grant programs.

American Legion Post 795 holding St. Patrick’s Day dinner

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. - The American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe is inviting locals and visitors to join members of the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary for a St. Patrick’s Day dinner on Friday, March 17, 2017. Food will be served beginning at 5:00 p.m. and the cost is $10. Door prizes will be given away during the evening. Pre-sale tickets are available, but tickets may also be purchased at the door. Food “To Go” will also be available.

The American Legion Hall is located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.
