The September announcement of the Project Homekey grant came with an end-of-the-year deadline so California communities would get the ball rolling on sheltering the chronic homeless.
Holiday shopping winners announced; Almost $40,000 added to economy with Go Local program

Kicking off in late November for Small Business Saturday, the holiday contest recorded $39,134 in spending at local restaurants and retailers through January 1st, a 291 percent increase from the 2019 contest.
Two new programs approved to help South Lake Tahoe small businesses

The approved $75,000 to be used for the purchase of bonus gift cards with the Tahoe Chamber. While a person purchases gift cards for use at local businesses they get a bonus gift card paid through the City's funding.
South Lake Tahoe City Council starts off the new year with a meeting Tuesday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/31/2020 - 3:09pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council will hold their first scheduled meeting of 2021 on Tuesday with discussion and possible vote on new proposals from the the City of South Lake Tahoe response to COVID-19, a summary of the new housing program and near term rental housing strategies, and the 2020 Lake Tahoe Airport Economic Impact Study findings.
The January 5 meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. and can be viewed on Channel 21 or online.
The agenda also includes consent items:
- Emergency Order No. 6 which authorizes cannabis retailers to temporarily operate curbside pickup.

South Lake Tahoe social justice group donates food gift cards to Family Resource Center

They spent the past several weeks gathering donations and today donated the last of almost $3,000 in food gift cards to the Family Resource Center.
"This community has been overwhelmingly impacted by COVID resulting in food insecurity," said one of the organizers Jen Dawn.

He said the restrictions that went into effect three weeks ago will continue until January 15, 2021. Each year the SISLT club president chooses a "President's Project" to complete during their year of service. This year, Club President Louisa Boone decided her project would be to make Christmas Stockings for the 50 women and 10 men the agency serves. Stockings were filled with beanies, socks, teas, gift cards for the men, beauty supplies and jewelry for the ladies.

Tahoe Film Fest returns with modified schedule on North Shore

The festival takes on a new look during the pandemic. The films originally scheduled for Northstar had to be moved as movie theaters must only operate outdoors due to Placer County's Purple Tier. The theaters on the Nevada side can still show films but only at 50 percent capacity.

Community rallies around Reno family who lost home in Pinehaven Fire
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2020 - 1:49pmTuesday's Pinehaven Fire in the Caughlin Ranch area of Reno burned quickly inside a 1,200 acre perimeter, taking with it five structures and damaging another 15. One of the homes lost belonged to the O'Brien family who lost their second home in 19 months.
The family of four, soon to be five, had recently moved back in after losing it the first time to an electrical fire when it was under construction. Mom Marie "Mimi" O'Brien is 37 weeks pregnant, expecting their third son in just three weeks.

City of South Lake Tahoe to fly flags at half-staff for former Recreation Superintendent Judy Crawford

She worked for the City from 1974 until 2003 and was the first woman to hold that position. Crawford was also the President of Great Ideas for Tahoe, or GIFT, during her time in the community.
Born in New Orleans, LA, in 1948, she lived around the country until she settled in South Lake Tahoe.
She started work for the City as a Recreation Supervisor and was eventually promoted to Recreation Superintendent. What she loved the most, teaching young kids how to swim.

Throughout the month of September, people are encouraged to get outside and walk or hike with friends and family, or on your own. Physical activity and spending time outdoors is good for our mental wellness so this is the perfect time to encourage and empower others to join this movement.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/31/2020 - 10:00amThe Tahoe East Shore Trail will be temporarily closed to public access between the Tunnel Creek Café and Sand Harbor on Tuesday, August 4 (all day), and Wednesday, August 5 through Friday, August 7 (after 8:00 p.m.) for the initial phase of a community mural art project.
The Tahoe Fund, Tahoe Public Art and Nevada State Parks collaborated to commission the mural to augment the natural beauty of the Tahoe East Shore Trail and transform a utilitarian tunnel into a community-involved, relevant art experience.
Tahoe Bike Challenge riders log over 45,000 miles

The Tahoe-basin wide challenge was a friendly competition that annually encourages individuals and teams to track trips and miles completed on their bikes.
“Congratulations to all of the winners and riders,” TRPA Transportation Planner Kira Smith said. “Although this year looked a little bit different, we hope the Challenge inspires people to bike and walk through the rest of the year.”

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - There won't be fireworks shows around Lake Tahoe but there will be the 4th of July Truckee Tahoe Honor Flyover honoring our nation's independence and frontline healthcare workers. Warbirds will take to the sky, flying over Truckee and Lake Tahoe communities.
A contingent of historic plans will leave the Truckee airport at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday the 4th and fly counterclockwise around Lake Tahoe (schedule below), coming back into Truckee by 12:15 p.m. The planes will not be on display at any airport, just a great show in the air.
Beloved South Lake Tahoe teacher retires

When he landed in South Lake Tahoe Kovac already had spent time teaching at Fairfax High School, Emerson Junior High, James Rutter Middle School, and Paul Revere Middle School, but he found his niche beginning locally at South Tahoe Middle School.
After one year at STMS Kovac took the position as athletics and activities director at South Tahoe High School (STHS), a position he held for five years.

Though taken far too soon, Sloan managed to live 10 lives in the span of his 47 years, punctuated by adventure, mischief, and quality time with his family and friends.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/26/2020 - 1:59pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Two people have been arrested in connection with six vehicle burglaries at trailhead parking areas in Douglas County, four at Lake Tahoe and two in the Carson Valley.
Between May 16 and May 23, 2020, the two suspects, Carolyn Brinkman and Harvis Berry, allegedly broke into cars, stealing cash and credit cards, then using the credit cards immediately at local stores, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO).
Neither the name of the stores or trailheads have been disclosed.
Portion of Tahoe East Shore Trail closed to stop visitation surges

Nevada State Parks has closed access to Sand Harbor via the Tahoe East Shore Trail temporarily due to expected visitation surges. Most of the trail will remain open.
Popular Sand Harbor has remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic and will remain open from 8:00 a.m. to one hour past dusk. The cost per car is $10.

Tahoe Magic gives out over $110K to locals; More donations sought to fill need

In just five weeks, the South Lake Tahoe non-profit has given away over $110,000 to more than local 785 families in need. In a normal year they give out about $30,000 to deserving families.
