To fund these meals, B&B invites individuals, families, businesses and service clubs/organizations to sponsor an ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment’. By donating a tax-deductible gift of $250.00, up to 110 people will be fed and up to 5 folks from the sponsor group can participate alongside the B&B volunteers at their sponsorship dinner.
Barton Auxiliary awards $76,500 to students and Birthing Center
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/19/2017 - 8:20pmSouth Lake Tahoe, Calif. – Thirteen students were recently awarded $19,000 in scholarships by the Barton Auxiliary which also gave $$57,500 to the Barton Family Birthing Center for additional services and equipment.
The awards came during a recognition lunch on June 12.
Barton Auxiliary is a group of volunteers who support Barton Hospital, its patients, and the community through. In 2016, Auxiliary volunteers raised funds from The Attic and gift shop sales, holiday fundraisers, and personal donations to fund their recent awards.

On May 18, 2017, Ms. Maloff gave a remarkable gift to the Tahoe Women’s Community Fund (TWCF). During the spring gala, which focused on the theme of impact, Ms. Maloff was able to experience the loving warmth in the room after her surprise gift of $100,000 was announced. The standing ovation that she received was only a small symbol of the gratitude that was felt by the membership. The night was filled with immense hope for the future of South Lake Tahoe. New zip line to go through treetops in South Lake Tahoe this summer
Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/14/2017 - 7:22pmThe Silver Rush, a new 4,159-foot long zip line opening this summer at Heavenly's Epic Discovery, will take users from tree-to-tree at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. Overlooking the Carson Valley, Silver Rush is comprised of five segmented zip lines; the final of which flies guests over the waters of East Peak Lake.
Once the ride is completed, guests enjoy a scenic ATV ride back to the top of the Gondola. It is a three-hour long experience.
Douglas County community celebrates "Senior for a Day"

John Caster, Deloris Carver, Donald Ward, Laurette Gilbert, Dick Hancpol and their escorts attended the luncheon with the Douglas County TRIAD. Some of the stories shared included life's travels, careers, military service and families.

“Tourism is a significant component of rural Nevada economies,” Claudia Vecchio, Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs director, said. “It is a $2.3 billion industry that continues to grow thanks to the efforts of the tourism professionals in rural Nevada. It is our pleasure to recognize those efforts with this year’s VolunTourism awards.”

The 9th annual World Autism Awareness Day is Sunday, April 2, and the Tahoe Tot Spot is holding a fundraiser to assist families with access to enrichment for those who cannot afford it.
On April 2, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Tahoe Tot Spot is having a celebration in recognition of autism.
"We will celebrate with free entry for all kiddos rocking the spectrum or special needs," said Tot Spot owner Jen Bloch.

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. – The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless invites the South Shore community to attend their second annual Warm Room Open House on Wednesday, February 22 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 2179 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe. The Warm Room provides overnight refuge from the elements in a safe and warm environment for adult men and women who are experiencing homelessness.
The Open House offers visitors a chance to tour the 2016-2017 space of operation, to meet volunteers and Board members, and to ask questions about the program and homelessness in our community.
Rick Taylor 1948-2017

Taylor, 68, was a cherished husband and loving father.
Rick was born on May 24, 1948 in Long Beach, CA and was a resident of the South Shore since 1975. Taylor was the owner of South Y Fireplace since 1989.

Bodie James Briggs was born in the Barton Hospital Birthing Center on Wednesday, January 4 at 5:08 p.m., weighing in at 7 pounds, 1 ounce and measuring 19 inches long.
Mom and dad are Jessica and Steve Briggs of Meyers. Bodie is named after the historic California gold-mining ghost town where they said they had enjoyed one of their most memorable days in 2015.

Judging of the decorated trees also took place. A team of local media, chamber members and educators viewed the trees and judged them on criteria including elegance, theme and creativity.
The Best of Show and Best Interpretation of Theme awards went to "Woodland Queen."

In addition to hosting a Boys and Girls Club golf tournament, the Edgewood Ladies Golf Club also sponsored a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment. It is definitely a credit to the members of the ladies golf group that they are so involved with helping the community.

Sheriff seeks suspects who passed counterfeit $100 bills on South Shore
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/03/2016 - 2:40pmThree men are being sought by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office for the allegedly passed counterfeit $100 bills at the CVS pharmacy in Stateline, Nev., on September 30.
Seven counterfeit bills were passed in three separate incidents by the three suspects. The transactions occurred at 12:07 a.m., 4:17 a.m. and 6:24 a.m. In all three incidents the men purchased Visa gift cards in varying amounts and received cash back in change.
At the 12:07 a.m. transaction, the suspect is described as a male, possible Hispanic, in his mid-30’s, wearing a black hat, black sweatshirt.

Ackerson Meadow added to Yosemite, largest addition to park since 1949

The meadow, a critical wetlands and meadow habitat on the park's western boundary, was purchased by the Trust for Public Land for $2.3 million and then donated to the park.

This free concert is presented by On Course Events and the City of South Lake Tahoe.
Funk band Swamp Zen gets the party started from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. and they'll be followed by Gypsy Rock band Diego's Umbrella who take the stage from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Popular V & T Railroad Polar Express tickets go on sale August 19
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/08/2016 - 2:43pmTickets for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad’s wildly popular holiday adventure to the North Pole via THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride will go on sale starting Friday, Aug. 19 at 6 a.m.
The schedule of enchanted train rides runs from Nov. 17 through Dec. 23. For the past five years, every seat on every train has sold out for the V&T’s magical trip to the North Pole, making it imperative for parents and grandparents to make arrangements early.

Tahoe Blue Vodka donates $5,000 to Keep Tahoe Blue

League supporters surpassed the match, raising over $10,000.

Teddy Roosevelt once said the Chautauqua is "the most American thing about America." Audiences will soon be able to see one of these historical, and entertaining, events on the South Shore when the Lake Tahoe Historical Society presents their annual Chautauqua at Lake Tahoe August 13 at 6:30 p.m. There is a cocktail party with fabulous appetizers at 5:15 p.m., which is included in the price of admission.
Barton Auxiliary gives out scholarships to help those pursuing medical careers
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/19/2016 - 8:51pmFourteen students from Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley received $19,500 in scholarships from the Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for their academic achievement and plans to pursue a career in medicine or science.
“It is our hope to give a head start to our future doctors, nurses, physical therapists, medical techs, biologists, psychologists, and first responders,” says Joanne Donmoyer, an Auxiliary and Scholarship Committee member. "The medical and science professions are very important in Tahoe, and we would be so pleased if some of our young people returned and served our community.”
Girl Scouts donate proceeds from cookie sales to Bread & Broth 4 Kids
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/12/2016 - 5:28pmNot only have the Girl Scouts from Troop #143 been helping fill bags of food all year for the Bread & Broth 4 Kids program during the whole school year, they also presented the non-profit with a $250 gift card to purchase food with for local children in need. They raised the money from selling Girl Scout cookies this past winter.
The fourth and fifth graders wanted to earn their Bronze Award and decided they wanted to find a community service project that would help other kids and found the Bread & Broth 4 Kids a natural choice.
