Lake effect snow could bring additional six inches of snow to South Shore Lake Tahoe Monday night
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/25/2021 - 4:02pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a new Winter Weather Advisory for Monday at 4:00 p.m. to Tuesday morning at 4:00 a.m. This new advisory is due to what is known as "lake effect snow." Six more inches of snow can drop on the south shore of Lake Tahoe area this evening.
Lake effect occurs when a mass of unstable cold air moves over a mass of water that is warm in comparison. The lake provides moisture for the band of weather moving over it.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/26/2020 - 12:19amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Greater Lake Tahoe area including the cities of South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Truckee, Markleeville, Stateline, Glenbrook, and Incline Village. It is in effect from 4:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on November 26.
Winds will be from the east 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph expected with waves 1 to 3 feet.
Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Expect southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected. Waves will be 2 to 4 feet with highest waves on the northeast shores.

Ryan Normoyle, 29, had rented a boat from the Ski Run Boat Company on August 10, 2020. That night, the boat washed ashore in Glenbrook, Nevada but Ryan was not with the boat.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Heat Advisory from 11:00 a.m. Friday to 8:00 p.m. Sundayfor Lake Tahoe due to consecutive days of high temperature. The forecast highs are 90-93 degrees those three days and record high temperatures are likely this holiday weekend.
Not only will there be high temperatures, there will also be widespread haze due to Northern California fires.

Scientists and doctors pled for the public to stay home to keep the virus from spreading, and that plea worked better in some areas than others.

As of 5:00 p.m. Saturday, law enforcement and rescue teams have responded to a reported head-on collision on Pioneer Trail, west of Golden Bear, a collision on Pioneer Trail and US 50 in Meyers, a collision on US 50 at Kyburz, a car off the roadway on SR89 near Emerald Bay and two collisions on US88 near Kirkwood. There are also numerous collisions on I80 and on the North Shore.

It was windy overnight, bringing in a quick storm that left a dusting of snow at lake level. As things clear out this morning, the rest of Wednesday will be partly sunny with a high near 39. Southwest winds will continue up to around 10 mph. Tonight, snow is likely, mainly after 4:00 a.m. Low will be around 21. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New snow accumulation of less than one inch is possible.

The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a Backcountry Avalanche Warning for the Sierra from Yuba Pass to Ebbetts Pass from Sunday morning until Monday morning at 7:00 a.m.
The latest storm system is still over the Sierra with more on the way. With high of 38 and low of 33, expect rain to continue in South Lake Tahoe.

Big rigs not allowed on I80 or US50; Chain controls in place over Lake Tahoe area roads
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/30/2019 - 8:18pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavy traffic over Donner Summit on I-80, an incoming snowstorm and slick conditions have led Caltrans officials to not allow any commercial tractor-semitrailer combinations on the highway from Applegate to the state line. They estimate this will be the case until Monday morning.
Many of those big rigs were coming over US-50 and Echo Summit, but no longer. The commercial semis 65-feet and longer are no longer allowed over the summit. It is unknown at this time when they will be allowed.

7:00 pm. update - Some drivers have informed South Tahoe Now that they have been able to start moving, though very slow and with one-way controlled traffic. Officially road is still listed as closed.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - All lanes of US50 at Tall Pines Road in Glenbrook are closed at this hour due to a head-on collision.

Snow levels dropped about 500 feet lower than anticipated in heavier precipitation bands with snow currently falling down to 4000-4500 feet this morning.

Most schools open, chain requirements up around Lake Tahoe

The only casualty is Douglas High School in Minden which will be closed Wednesday due to lack of sufficient heating in classrooms. All other DCSD schools are open with no delays in transportation.

UPDATE 8:20 p.m.- Power has been restored to most of the affected customers. There are a couple of people without power in the Zephyr Cove area and 172 customers are still without power in the Glenbrook area. NV Energy still estimates all will be restored by 9:15 p.m.

Power to 1,133 customers of NV Energy is currently out power this evening due to damage to their equipment near Glenbrook, Nev.
Douglas County again looking for task force members as they revamp VHR ordinance
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/29/2019 - 12:16amSTATELINE, Nev. - Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs) in Douglas County were on last Thursday's agenda for the Board of County Commissioners, leading them to seek additional representatives for their newly appointed VHR Task Force.
Douglas County uses the services of Host Compliance, the same company hired by the City of South Lake Tahoe to seek out unlicensed VHRs and under-reported Tourist Occupancy Tax (TOT). They charge the County $94,000 annually for their services.

Up at the North Shore, Truckee Tahoe School District schools are closed. All school activities are cancelled unless notified otherwise.
Health assessment of South Lake Tahoe shows mental health and substance abuse at top of needs list

Every three years Barton Health conducts a Community Health Needs Assessment to identity the key health issues facing the area. They use a systematic, data-driven process to determine the health status, concerns, and needs of residents in the South Tahoe community.
The 2018 results are a follow-up to similar studies completed in 2012 and 2015.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has enacted a change on these Tahoe-area highways and now require any vehicle traveling without tire chains during winter chain restrictions to be four-wheel or all-wheel drive with snow tires. No longer will cars without these distinctions be allowed to cross chain control lines with just snow tires.
Chain controls go up around Lake Tahoe

As of 10:00 p.m. Wednesday night the following controls are in place:
Highway 50/Echo Summit - From Fred's Place to Meyers: Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas).

Prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe as weather permits

Operations may take place near Glenbrook on the East Shore; near Heavenly Mountain Resort’s Boulder and California lodges, near Twin Peaks and in Baldwin Meadow on the South Shore; in D.L. Bliss and Burton Creek state parks and near Rubicon Estates on the West Shore; and on urban lots in Kings Beach on the North Shore.
LTCC becomes the only college in the country to offer free bi-state tuition program

All first-time college students, including those who earned college units while still in high school, can get their tuition waived. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in and complete 12 or more units each quarter for three academic quarters, and meet one of the following requirements:

Cave Rock barriers come down as construction project nears end
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/15/2018 - 6:22pmThe project to stabilize the roadside slope near Cave Rock has been substantially completed, enough so that most of the lane reduction barriers have been removed. Crews Wednesday were smoothing new asphalt. Motorists should anticipate intermittent roadway shoulder and lane closures over coming weeks for final construction clean up.
