Free bereavement camp for Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley area kids

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health is hosting Camp Sunrise, a free bereavement camp, for kidse ages 7 to 14 August 16-17 at Galiliee Camp and Retreat Center in Glenbrook.
Kids who have experienced the death of a loved one are invited to attend the camp which offers education and support through a variety of fun-filled activities and programs on the shore of Lake Tahoe.
Severe thunderstorm warning for Lake Tahoe, Douglas County, Alpine County Sunday evening
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/22/2018 - 6:16pmThe National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Glenbrook, Alpine County, Place County, El Dorado County, Washoe County, Douglas County an Western Carson City from 6:06 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. Sunday, July 22.
Radar has indicated a strong cell sitting over South Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay, bringing a chance of quarter size hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph. In heavy hit areas, expect hail damage to vehicles along with wind damage to roofs, siding, fencing and trees.
Another strong thunderstorm cell is above Kirkwood.

Amgen cyclist Peter Stetina hits the road from South Lake Tahoe to Kirkwood

American professional road cyclist Peter Stetina was in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday, inviting local cyclists to join him on a training run from Sprouts to Kirkwood, and back.
Daniel Knight of Dayton, Nev., the assistant manager of Save Mart in Carson City came to town to join Stetina. Chadwick Clark of South Lake Tahoe, the chef at Camp Galilee in Glenbrook, also joined in. Both ride their bikes to work when weather allows.

Lake Tahoe storm closes college and schools

The blizzard warnings in the Lake Tahoe basin have prompted school officials to close schools, or in the case of Douglas County, put them on late start.
Lake Tahoe Unified School District is on a Snow Day. All Schools Will be CLOSED today due to the Blizzard Warning issued by the National Weather Service.

Chain controls finally going up around the Lake Tahoe Basin

It's been awhile, but its time to get the chains ready if you're without 4WD and snow tires! A long awaited storm is making its way into the Lake Tahoe basin. A Winter Storm Warning is in place for Lake Tahoe until 4:00 p.m. Friday.
I-80 over Donner Pass has had chain controls go up at about 7:00 p.m. but Highway 50 over Echo Summit just saw chain controls go up at 10:15 p.m.

Lake Valley, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will continue Lake Tahoe Basin prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks, weather permitting. Operations are scheduled to take place at or near D.L. Bliss State Park, Carnelian Bay, Kings Beach, Incline Village, Diamond Peak Ski Resort area, Glenbrook, upper and lower Kingsbury Grade and south and east of the Lake Tahoe Airport.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will be wrapping up their two major Lake Tahoe projects for the season over the coming weeks. Crews are working diligently to complete all that they can this construction season before heavy winter weather sets in and makes construction infeasible. Both projects will return with construction next spring.

It wasn't a big one, but big enough to move the Richter scale at the University of Nevada Seismological Lab in Reno. At 1:10 a.m. there was a 1.2 magnitude earthquake Thursday morning 3.7 miles WSW of South Lake Tahoe, 10 miles southwest of Glenbrook.
It was the tenth small earthquake in just over 24 hours in the Sierra, most near Mammoth Lakes, Hawthorne and Bishop.

First tornado warning issued for the Lake Tahoe basin; Waterspout and funnel cloud spotted

The National Weather Service (NSW) in Reno today issued their very first tornado warning for the Lake Tahoe basin.
At 3:45 p.m. a severe thunderstorm warning was issued first for the middle of Lake Tahoe near Glenbrook. At that time one of their team members saw a funnel cloud over Incline Village and sent in a photo, so the tornado warning was issued immediately.
Even though Wednesday's warning was the first for Lake Tahoe, there have been five issued for northwest Nevada since 2000 according to Scott McGuire of the NWS Forecast Office in Reno.
Zephyr Cove power plant fire left thousands in the dark

UPDATE 12:00PM - Power is still out to 2,418 NV Energy customers. The power company estimates they will have power restored by 2:00 p.m. Monday. All Liberty Utilities customers have had their electricity restored.
Minor injuries in two separate Highway 50 crashes Sunday

Two separate minor crashes on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe Sunday caused some delays for drivers, but no major injuries were reported.
A driver near Glenbrook on Highway 50 was involved in a single-car rollover, causing damage to the SUV but only minor injuries.
In a second accident, not paying attention to the road ahead resulted in a collision at Marla Bay on Highway 50. Minor injuries in this crash as well.
Both crashes were cleared up fairly quickly.
No other information was made available by the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Annual Canadian Goose roundup completed in Lake Tahoe and Reno

Not only humans enjoy hanging out in Lake Tahoe, the Canadian Goose does as well, and according to many, perhaps too well. The annual goose roundup is now complete with 118 of the geese from Lake Tahoe now living at the Wild Horse Reservoir in Elko County.

NDOT to start slope stabilization project in Lake Tahoe

Boulders along Highway 50 by Cave Rock will soon be removed as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) begins to reinforce a destabilized slope along the roadway at Logan Creek on Lake Tahoe's East Shore.
Work will begin June 7.
Numerous boulders the size of large vehicles rolled down the slope several times during the past winter, bringing NDOT to add a concrete barrier and reduce the traffic to one northbound land. Luckily, no vehicles have been involved in the slides, and no injuries reported.
National Trails Day celebrated with festival at Spooner Lake

185,000 guests used Airbnb this winter in Sierra; Hosts earned $32 million

Short-term vacation rentals in the Sierra from Truckee to Bear Valley earned more money this winter and brought in more guests than in the past, according to a report released by Airbnb.
More than 185,000 visitors booked rooms or homes from Airbnb hosts during the 2016-17 winter, up 48 percent from last winter. Also on the rise were earnings by hosts, revealing the surge of short-term rentals that have put neighbors against neighbors, and had community leaders grappling with their impact on neighborhoods.

Best Tasting Water in Nevada award goes to Cave Rock

For the third in four years, water in Douglas County has won the Best Tasting Water award for the state of Nevada.
The Nevada Rural Water Association (NvRWA) announced that the Cave Rock Water Treatment Plant had won first place at their recent conference in Reno. The service area includes Cave Rock, Lakeside and Skyland systems next to beautiful Lake Tahoe.

If fire crews get the okay, operations will be near Tahoe City, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Kingsbury Grade, and South Lake Tahoe.

If conditions are favorable, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service may resume prescribed fire operations beginning today, March 16, 2017. Operations may take place near Tahoe City and Glenbrook and may continue as conditions allow.
On the schedule is the burning of 50 acres of hand piles at Logan Creek Drive and Highway 50 as well as 30 acres at Burton Creek State Park between North Tahoe High and Rocky Ridge Properties.

Drivers between South Lake Tahoe and Spooner Summit may once again travel along Highway 50 after it was closed for several days after boulders larger than passenger vehicles rolled down the hill onto the road just north of Cave Rock.
Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) reopened the road with one lane of traffic moving in each direction.
No vehicles were involved in the slides, and no injuries were reported.

Highway 50 on Lake Tahoe's east shore closed due to new rock slides

LAKE TAHOE, NEV. - Two more boulders have come off the hill onto Highway 50 north of Cave Rock, causing transportation officials to temporarily close down the road in both directions on Wednesday, February 8.
The boulders, both larger than a vehicle, came down in the last two hours at Logan Creek, the same area where boulders rolled onto the roadway on Monday and Tuesday. All of the boulders have been larger than the size of a passenger vehicle.

Douglas County Schools at the lake are open Thursday, but it is main bus stops only for both Whittell High School and Zephyr Cove Elementary.

Even though the storm hitting Lake Tahoe this weekend is a wet one, snow levels will fluctuate between 6500 and 8000 feet. Flooding near rivers and streams is already being seen in many areas. Some area passes have been snow covered, including Mt. Rose, Brockway, Echo, Spooner, and Kingsbury Summits. Additional snow amounts of 6 to 10 inches are possible for elevations above 8000 feet, with several inches of snow down to 7000 feet.
As of 10:00 a.m., chain controls are up on Echo Summit, Spooner Summit, Kingsbury Grade, Brockway Summit.

Fall and winter bring cooler temperatures and precipitation, which favor prescribed burning. The joint efforts to remove excess vegetation are scheduled to take place at nine different locations including Glenbrook, Cave Rock, Round Hill, lower Kingsbury Grade, South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Paradise and Meyers.

SLT Cancer League opens annual Sees's Candy Store this week

It's time once again for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League's annual See's Candy Store. Starting December 1, and going until December 24 if supplies last, the community can stop by their shop at the "Y" and help the non-profit group raise the funds needed to help local residents with cancer.

Chain controls are up on area roads this morning after the passing of a small storm overnight.
As of 7:00 a.m. Tuesday:
Highway 50 over Echo Summit: Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires on all wheels from Meyers to Twin Bridges.
Firefighters killed in 1926 fire to be remembered in ceremony

It was 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 28 in the year 1926. Fire had broken out at the Jack Smith Ranch at the base of Clear Creek Canyon above Carson City, Nev.
Flames were high, and the fire traveled up the canyon rapidly, getting ever so close to the source of timber for all of the state's mines at Glenbrook. The fire also burned several ranches. Strong winds fanned those flames, and caused the fire to reverse itself and come down Kings Canyon. Again, it reversed itself and raced up Kings Canyon one more.

Expect new travel delays as Cave Rock project enters final phase

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – Travelers going through the Cave Rock area of Lake Tahoe should anticipate minor delays as construction crews enter the final phase of construction on a $6 million safety project. There will be work zone traffic pattern changes as both lanes of the roadway are repaved, spraying of concrete continues as well as other final tasks. The project is expected to be completed by October.
Sacramento man identified as Lake Tahoe diving victim

The man who died Monday as he was doing underwater exploring around the SS Tahoe in Glenbrook Bay has been identified.
Michael Stephen Majewski, 63, of Sacramento was diving with two friends in about 360’ of water. All three are experienced divers and had completed a similar dive at the same wreckage the day before but for unknown reasons, Majewski made an emergency ascent to the surface. When he reached the surface he was unconscious and not responsive.

A 63-year-old man diving in Lake Tahoe near Glenbrook Bay died on Monday, September 5.
Marine Patrols from Douglas County Sheriff, Washoe County Sheriff and El Dorado County Sheriff, along with Tahoe Douglas Fire all responded to the distress call of a scuba diver in trouble just after 10:00 a.m.

Long before President Bill Clinton's visit to lake Tahoe with Vice-President Al Gore in 1997, and President Barack Obama's visit coming on August 31, 2016, there were two Presidents who enjoyed some time at the lake.
Two men who once served as America's chief executive visited Lake Tahoe and Nevada
in the late 1800s according to former Nevada State Archivist Guy Rocha. Both Ulysses S. Grant Rutherford B. Hayes were transported along the lake on the steamboat, Meteor.
