Flash mob in South Lake Tahoe brings awareness to exploitation of women

A flash mob in the middle of Heavenly Village isn't a normal occurrence, so at 2:00 p.m. February 4 when a few dozen women and children started dancing to music, people stopped and the phone cameras came out.

For the past several weeks, members of the South Lake Tahoe community have been rehearsing a dance to the music "Break the Chain" in support of "One Billion Rising", a one-day international event to bring exploitation of women, human trafficking and violence against women and girls to the forefront.

South Lake Tahoe Mayor Sass: Snow removal, fire code, state of emergency and more

It’s been great seeing all of my friends and acquaintances who have lived here for less than 10 years posting photos and sharing how Snowmageddon 2017 has blown them away. I did the same when I first moved to Tahoe back in the 70’s and storms like this were not uncommon. Back then playing was more important than clearing the snow. I had a big Dodge Ram 4x4 pickup and I j drove over the snow in my driveway and packed it down. I did not own a snowblower and can’t remember shoveling much. One year the packed snow was so high I could not get the truck under the carport.

Brothers Nick and Chris Smith will make the way back to South Lake Tahoe from Hollywood with Sean Pawling as part of the Tahoe Arts Project's Tahoe Boys Variety Show.

Pet of the Week: Gambit

Gambit is this week's Pet of the Week! He is a very sweet and playful 5-year-old Pitty who needs a loving home. Gambit is a big boy and gets excited, so not the best fit for a home with toddlers or infants. He is good with other dogs, but not so good with cats.

If you are interested in giving this boy a home please call the Lake Tahoe Humane Society at 530-577-4521.

For Spay-Neuter services and other support, call the Lake Tahoe Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at 530-542-2857.

Heavenly, last week’s Pet of the Week, is now at her forever home!
