Minden man arrested after monthslong drug investigation
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/23/2019 - 7:32pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A months-long investigation into drug activity in Douglas County has resulted in the arrest of a Minden, Nevada man.
On Wednesday, October 16, 2019, members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Street Enforcement Team (DCSET) served a search warrant at the Esther Way home of Robert Wilson. Inside they found almost $10,000 in cash, five pounds of Psilocybin Mushrooms, 21 firearms and a marijuana THC extraction lab with approximately seven pounds of a marijuana extract.

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed in line of duty; Two arrested
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/23/2019 - 9:40am11:30 a.m. UPDATE: Deputy Brian Ishmael of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office died in the line of duty early Wednesday after being shot after arrival at a home in Somerset, Calif. They were responding to a call of theft from a marijuana garden.
El Dorado County Sheriff John D'Agostini held a press conference Wednesday morning, updating the public on some of what transpired earlier in the day.

What does the Farmer's Almanac say? Are the squirrels fatter? Is NOAA going to be right in their three-month forecast?
There is no app to give one the perfect insight into what winter has in store and most weather can only be predicted a week out. For generations, people have relied on signs from Mother Nature.
LTCC women's soccer team on top of national coaches poll for 4th straight week
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/18/2019 - 7:46amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College's Women's Soccer team is on top of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NJCAA poll for Division III for the fourth consecutive week. On September 25 they rose to the top spot of the list and haven't left since then.
Fresno City College is currently in the second spot, a team they tied during a September 20 match-up, 1-1. The team the women lost too in last year's state final, Santiago Canyon College, dropped to the twelfth-ranked team.

On Campus
Midterms are Thursday and Friday next week. Study labs are held after school for support and tutoring in different courses before the tests. Midterms mark the halfway point for the first term of the 2019-2020 year. The stress begins to increase, especially for the seniors.

Not only for these reasons, but take-home vehicles have also resulted in cleaner cars with fewer mechanical problems, longer life-spans and reduced costs.

The County announced earlier this year they had purchased the old post office at 3368 Sandy Way in order to move offices over from across the street as a "new campus" is created for services.

The Christina, a 65-foot yacht that once called Lake Tahoe home, is now an iconic art car that has been cruising along the playa in the Black Rock Desert. She is returning to Lake Tahoe during "Docked at Hard Rock" November 1-2.
Flipper Manchester, a South Lake Tahoe construction company owner, was originally hired to demolish the yacht that had been dry-docked at the Tahoe Keys Marina for years.

A large crowd was on hand to enjoy food, music and watch the exchanging of gifts between the cities.

One of those prizes went to 14-year-old Sebastian Kilgore, a freshman at South Tahoe High School. Blue Zone Sports selected the young man who competes in slopestyle and rail events in the USAA South Tahoe Series. Kilgore had a very successful 2018-19 season and placed fourth in Nationals where his "Front 630 Off Rail" won the "Best Trick" award.

Thirty-eight local nonprofits were given checks totaling $100,000, a result of funds raised during the 30th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood.
One injured in South Lake Tahoe house fire

At 10:30 p.m.. October 9, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was called to a home on Warr Road. Nearby residents calling into the 911 dispatch center said flames were visible, and due to the number of calls, SLTFR Battalion Chief Jay Manning called for Tahoe Douglas and Lake Valley fire departments to come assist as he was en route.
Upon arrival, they found the one-story home fully engulfed in fire. Firefighters could see "heavy fire involvement" on the right side of the home.

"It is so good to be back!" said Principal Karin Holmes. "The kids are doing great and the staff is so happy to be back in their classrooms. We are getting organized and enjoying being home. Our staff and students did not miss a beat in the transition back to Sierra House."

Duane Kurt Makela, 50, pleaded guilty in federal court in San Francisco Thursday to ten armed bank robberies, seven unarmed bank robberies, and two attempted bank robberies.

5,000 Lahontan cuthroat trout to be placed in Lake Tahoe for first time; Public invited
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/02/2019 - 8:36pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the first time ever, the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery will release 5,000 large Pilot Peak Lahontan cutthroat trout into their home waters of Lake Tahoe.
Over three days, the 12"-14" sized trout will be placed in the water, and the public is invited to two of those historic, interpretive stocking events during the Fall Fish Festival at Taylor Creek.
South Lake Tahoe to become Sister City with Ameca in Jalisco, Mexico
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/01/2019 - 11:16amThe City of South Lake Tahoe is on its way to becoming the Sister City with the City of Ameca, State of Jalisco, Mexico. This will be the first Sister City for South Lake Tahoe since its former relationship with Baikalsk, Russia ended.
On August 20, long-time local resident and educator Tere Tibbets brought the subject to the City Council and the process to become a Sister City began. Los Mexicanos Restaurant owner Victor Mora had the idea and worked with Tibbetts to bring it to fruition.
Sierra House Elementary opens fully on Tuesday

Families, students, and staff got the good news Monday.
"The kids and staff are thrilled to be back," said Lake Tahoe Unified School District Spokesperson Shannon Chandler. "It's like a second home so I imagine that everyone is relieved and comforted to be back."
Sierra House Elementary planning to reopen completely this week

Though the exact date is yet unknown, Principal Karin Holmes sent a letter to parents to give them the much-awaited news.
Belfor Construction is finalizing construction in the multi-purpose room while mantenance and custodial staff are wiping down dust, cleaning carpets and bathrooms, and testing will be conducted on water, HVAC and fire systems.

Women's Soccer Team at LTCC ranked #1 in national coach's poll

Their epic season took them to the state finals.
Fast forward to this year and the 2019 Lady Coyotes made it to the number one on the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NJCAA poll for Division III this week. Fresno City College is currently in the second spot, a team they tied during a September 20 match-up, 1-1.
Two juveniles, one adult arrested in South Lake Tahoe felony burglary and robbery cases

The first call occurred at midnight. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded after a woman in the 2000 block of Fresno Avenue said a 17-year-old Zephyr Cove resident, who was a former roommate, came to her front door. She refused to answer the door and the suspect climbed through the garage window to steal marijuana.

The Homecoming Parade is slated for October 12. Students plan on walking from T.J. Maxx to the high school to celebrate homecoming traditions. Ms. Russel’s leadership classes expect a big crowd and a fun day before the homecoming dance that evening.

For the last ten months, the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) site has opened the doors on the space they rent from Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and shared with students during the school day.
BGCLT are scheduled to break ground next Spring on a new "clubhouse" that will be built next door, but in the meantime they share each room with staff and students from Sierra House.

A life-long dream came true for South Tahoe High English teacher Bridey Heidel when she met Simon LeBon of Duran Duran on Friday night during their outdoor concert at Harveys. Not only did see meet him during a personal one-on-one back stage before the concert, she was also brought on stage for hugs, holding hands, a kiss on the cheek, and a song.
"I feel like I'm going to explode," said Bridey after meeting LeBon and waiting to go on stage. She had just spent time with him in the backstage sitting room, getting to chat with the lead singer and others.

The cross-country team is competing in a meet at the Nevada Union High School on Saturday.
“I can see great potential in everyone going forward and can’t wait to see what the team will bring to big meets, come the end of season,” said junior Carissa Buchholz, the current 3A Nevada state champion.

Fire Fest is returning to the South Shore on Saturday, September 21, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. outside the back of Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe. Admission is free and it's a great opportunity for families to have fun while learning about safety and conservation.
Helicopters will be the stars this year as they land just outside the venue at the Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe. What an incredible opportunity to get a close-up look at these amazing machines! Crews will be on hand to answer questions and explain how they help us when we need them most.
South Lake Tahoe 9/11 ceremony honors first responders and military
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/11/2019 - 8:11pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was on this day in 2001 when a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks against the United States left 2,996 people dead, over 6,000 injured and causing at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage.
South Lake Tahoe joined communities around the country in honoring those who jumped in to rescue the survivors and joined in the fight against terrorism. At the American Legion, firefighters, police officers, veterans and community members gathered for a ceremony hosted by members of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary.
100th anniverary of historic military convoy heading through South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/11/2019 - 6:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - 100 years ago, the US Army Motor Transport Corps convoy traveled along the brand new (and now famed and historic) Lincoln Highway from coast to coast. They covered over 3,000 miles from Washington, D.C. to Oakland, California on road, then ferried over to their end in San Francisco.
Now, in 2019, the Military Vehicle Preservation Association is will follow the original Lincoln Highway route as closely as possible during the 100th Anniversary Convoy across the United States, and South Lake Tahoe is on that route.
Sierra House not ready for all students; Al Tahoe to remain open
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/10/2019 - 10:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students and staff at Sierra House Elementary started their first day of school Monday, nine months after a fire caused significant damage to the building and moved students to other locations as work was completed to remove all damaged material and rebuild the inside.
Excitement about the return has been shortlived and shadowed by issues causing authorities to move many of the students back to Al Tahoe Elementary for classes until issues can be resolved on the campus.
