The first "thirst parlor," the Genoa Bar, came along two years later to serve drinks to those traveling the California Trail as well as others finding themselves in the West.

It's long been joked that South Lake Tahoe has two seasons: winter and road construction.

Get ready for the latter as it's time to begin the South Lake Tahoe projects.

The Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School in Meyers is now taking names for the Fall 2014 line-up of Kindergarteners. Be sure to stop by the school before March 28 at 3:00 p.m. to get your child’s name into the lottery which will be held April 1st. Your child must be turning five years of age on or before December 2, 2014.

Students can live anywhere in South Lake Tahoe (not just Meyers) to apply. The school is located at 1095 East San Bernardino Avenue, at the end of Apache, off Hwy 50 in Meyers.

Tragedy struck at the 2012 SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe when 19 year old Alyssa Byrne became separated from her friends and died of hypothermia after falling in a snow bank after attempting to walk back to her hotel.

Out of that tragedy, the "Always My Buddy" program was developed. Alyssa's family wanted to make sure another family didn't have to go through what they did by making sure everyone that is an unfamiliar place is safe.

The Barton Foundation has been a cornerstone for The Barton Health Group for more than 20 years by providing excellent healthcare service to customers and also have been big players during the holiday season. This year’s Barton Festival of Trees and Lights will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Barton Health and Coldwell Banker Select will be contributing to the event in a major way. The franchise will be donating a gorgeous “sports themed” Christmas tree to the event, which will be auctioned off at the black tie gala event on December 7th.

The Coldwell Banker Select office in Zephyr Cove is known for pushing it to the limit when securing great deals for their clients. However, the hard work of three agents also translates outside of the office. Last weekend, Pike Reardon, Jim Kilen and Penny Echan all participated in the North Tahoe/Truckee Ironman event, with Reardon and Kilen having big finishes, with Pike finishing 9th in his age group and 84th overall. Echan woke up at 2AM Sunday morning to get her kayak in the lake prior to the 5AM start time of the event.

A major road construction project through South Lake Tahoe is drawing to a close as turf, trees and plants are installed along Highway 50 between Trout Creek and Ski Run Boulevard. The $43.1 million project to collect and treat storm water runoff and provide substantial safety and beautification features started in 2011. The project also included ADA compliant sidewalks with lighting and landscaping and Class II bike lanes to give bikers a safer ride

Drivers can now drive by and see the 183 newly planted trees, 4,966 new shrubs and ground cover plants and 10.897 square yards of turf.

TahoeChamber’s next Tech Tuesday will feature Alexis Robin of Nourish Life Coaching. Alexis will be teaching attendees how to harness the power of smartphones, calendar and web apps to be more productive at work.

The workshop will look through the technology lens to help you sell smarter, stress less, capture ideas, leverage your strengths and get things done! Attendees will walk away with a new bag of tricks using the apps and programs they already have.

UPDATE: The following is a prepared statement from the Brotherhood Motorcycle Club in response to the arrest of an alleged member of the club. It is in response to a news release made Tuesday by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. Here is the statement:

Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 5 from 8-9:30am, TahoeChamber will kick-off a new workshop series, Tech Tuesdays. These one and half hour workshops will cover the hottest trends in technology.

The series opener will touch on the basics of Social Media and will be taught by Jenn Gleckman of Strategic Marketing Group. Jenn is very well versed in strategic planning, integrated media planning and buying, website development and maintenance, social media programs, and email marketing programs.

After attending the State of the South Shore Economy Public Forum held on October 23rd, 2012 I was inspired to draft a response to the questions about economic revitalization that were asked at the meeting. I feel like our group had many salient ideas that were not properly represented. Also, I have noticed that people are quick to offer ideas like “reduce unemployment”, “beautify the city”, and “improve recreation”, but they are typically unable to offer suggestions on how to make those ideas a reality.

Saturday is the Great Sierra River Cleanup with more than 11,200 volunteers joining together to scour watersheds throughout the Sierra Nevada. Hundreds of community groups will spread across 22 counties and 1,052 river miles to pull appliances, cigarette butts, beverage cans, baby diapers, tires, furniture, and more from the rivers and streams that supply the State of California with 65 percent of its water. This effort, in partnership with the California Coastal Cleanup Day, serves to promote good stewardship on all of our waterways, from the source to the sea.

Golden Bear Events presents the inaugural 4th of July Parade in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, July 4, from 10 a.m. to noon down Highway 50.
This event is sponsored by the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, KTHO Radio 590 am and 96.1 fm and the City of South Lake Tahoe. Staging will be at Stateline Ave., then proceed down Hwy 50 to Rufus Allen Blvd.
The parade will culminate in the back of the parking lot at the Recreation Complex at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd. Bring out the family to line the highway and watch or meet at the Recreation Complex for the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
