Weather and road condition report for Lake Tahoe

4:00 p.m. UPDATE: Interstate 80 has reopened at this time, but tractor-semitrailer combinations are not allowed due to traction concerns. SR88 is closed at the Carson Spur with no time estimated of reopening.Hwy 50 over Echo Summit is reopened after a collision was cleared. Most roads in the Sierra are requiring chains or 4WD with snow tires.

Chain controls remain up and snow continues to come down

The snow has been falling all down in the Sierra, giving residents and visitors a glimpse into a winter that hasn't been even a slight resemblance into the big winter of 2017.

At this point, every seems to be happy with what fell Thursday. Snow totals aren't in from the ski resorts yet since they release them in the morning, but they most likely will be several inches and hovering near the one foot level.

Winter weather advisory remains in place overnight in Lake Tahoe

A storm that dropped over a foot of snow at higher elevations around Lake Tahoe is hanging around Thursday evening.

Chain controls are in place on roads in the Sierra including Highway 50, I-80, State Route 88 and 89, Kingsbury Grade and Spooner Summit. On Hwy 50 they start as low as Kyburz, Dew Drop on SR-88 and Baxter on I-80 as of 5:10 p.m.

The winter storm warning is in effect until 4:00 a.m. Friday morning. A few more inches of snow is forecast for lake level.

Drier conditions with mild temperatures will return for the weekend and early next week

Road closures on Hwy 50 and I-80 this week for new sign installations

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is alerting motorists that lane and highway closures on area freeways will be required to replace three overhead changeable message signs with new “Advanced Variable Message Signs” or AVMS. The new signs will be installed in the following locations:
Interstate 80 westbound – Truckee – Donner Pass Road/Hwy 89
Interstate 80 westbound – Davis – Pole Line Road bridge
U.S. Highway 50 eastbound – El Dorado Hills – Latrobe Road

Lane restrictions and work hours to increase on Hwy 50 in South Lake Tahoe

Work on the $56 million Highway 50 project in South Lake Tahoe is suspended for the Labor Day weekend, but once the holiday traffic leaves drivers can expect longer delays when lane restrictions are increased.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 12:01 a.m., contractor Security Paving Inc. may reduce the highway to one open lane iSn each direction around the clock until 11 a.m. on Fridays.

Beginning Sept. 10, work will be around the clock from midnight Sunday to 11 a.m. Friday each week, with weekends free of construction. Motorists can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

Zephyr Cove power plant fire left thousands in the dark

UPDATE 12:42PM - Power has now been restored to all customers.

UPDATE 12:00PM - Power is still out to 2,418 NV Energy customers. The power company estimates they will have power restored by 2:00 p.m. Monday. All Liberty Utilities customers have had their electricity restored.

Caltrans working on I-80 and Hwy 50 this week

Those traveling to and from Lake Tahoe this week may want to take note of traffic alerts on both Interstate 80 and Highway 50.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will be doing overnight Work to repair rough spots in the roadway Monday night through Friday morning. They will be doing grinding and paving work on U.S. Highway 50 on the section of the roadway that descends after Echo Summit into the Tahoe Basin.

We were successfully awarded $2.9 million in federal funds to complete all of the funding for the Sierra Blvd. Streetscape project-we are now 100% funded through construction. Reno-Tahoe Odyssey run to go through South Lake Tahoe Friday

The 13th annual Reno Tahoe Odyssey will take runners from Reno, north of Verdi, down to Boca Reservoir, Truckee, down to South Lake Tahoe, over to Virginia City and back to Reno starting Friday, June 2. The event this year is 174.5 miles long, has 242 teams which split up 36 legs of the race, and they don't stop as the sun drops, they run all night long.

South Tahoe High teacher Bridey Heidel is participating this year with her team of "Girls Gone Miles."

Space available for South Lake Tahoe 4th of July parade

After a very successful inaugural 4th of July parade in 2016, the City of South Lake Tahoe is doing it again in 2017. They have invited everyone to participate with a float, band, bicycle group, walkers or whatever other unique way to celebrate the nation one can come up with. Showcase your organization while joining with the entire community in celebrating Independence Day.

NDOT holding public meeting about proposed South Shore Hwy 50 changes

There are proposed improvements to Highway 50 from the state line at the South Shore to Spooner Summit, and the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) would like to share ideas and hear your comments. On Wednesday, May 31 there will be a public meeting at the Zephyr Cove Elementary School multi-purpose room located at 226 Warrior Way in Zephyr Cove, with an informational presentation held at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend the open-format meeting at any time between 4 and 7 p.m.

"Pay it Forward Day" at California Burger in South Lake Tahoe

Proceeds at California Burger today go back to the employees. Yes, you read that right!

Just as he did last year, owner Ted Kennedy is having a 'pay-it-forward' day again at the popular hamburger spot at the Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe.

"All profits for the day will be given back to the employees," said Kennedy. "It's their money and they can do with it as they wish, but the hope is that they will use it to help someone less fortunate in their community."

Snowing and Gusty Winds reported at most resorts… Upper Mountain Lifts are being affected by Winds at Heavenly, Squaw, Alpine… Other Resorts on Delayed openings after Snow Safety… Call Ahead! Grab the Fat Boards… Surface Conditions are Powder & Machine Groomed… Road Controls posted on roadways in and around Lake Tahoe… Buckle Up, Have Fun & Be Safe!

Weather permitting, prescribed burning to continue in Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD), California State Parks (Parks) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) have scheduled more prescribed burns in the Lake Tahoe area, as long as weather permits the operations.

Starting Monday, April 10, burning may take place near Tahoe City, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Lower Kingsbury Grade, South Lake Tahoe, and Meyers.

Areas on the map above:
A) 30 acres in the Glenbrook area (TDFPD)
B) 40 acres in Edgewood Creek area (TDFPD)
C) 15 acres in Lower Kingsbury area (TDFPD)
D) 30 acres at Burton Creek State Park (Parks)
