Oregon Ducks win back-to-back Pac-8 Hockey Championships in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a full weekend of action on the ice in South Lake Tahoe as the Ice Arena was home to the Pac-8 Men's Hockey Championship. The final game put the #1 and #2 seeds from the north, the University of Oregon and Boise State, together to fight it out for the trophy.

For the second consecutive year, and for the fifth time, the Oregon Ducks will be taking home the championship title back to Eugene. They blanked the Boise State Broncos 3-0.

New agreement in the works for 56-acre South Lake Tahoe downtown project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long-discussed 56-acre parcel in the middle of South Lake Tahoe is finally seeing movement again, and both the South Lake Tahoe City Council and El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) supporting further conversation. A formal agreement between the two is expected later in 2020 with another one-two years of public meetings, consultant review, and planning before plans are implemented. The California Tahoe Conservancy is funding the cost of the consultant, just as they did 30 years ago.

Stress levels were high this week for students at South Tahoe High School. Seniors finish college applications due at the end of the month and sports head off to regional championships.

South Tahoe High School had a slow week, as students began to settle in. On the other hand, the sports teams have a busy weekend.

The cross-country team is competing in a meet at the Nevada Union High School on Saturday.

“I can see great potential in everyone going forward and can’t wait to see what the team will bring to big meets, come the end of season,” said junior Carissa Buchholz, the current 3A Nevada state champion.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

This week at South Tahoe High School, students enjoyed a short week with Labor Day Weekend and Back-to-School night. Seniors get prepared for their last year at STHS and multiple home games wrap up the week.

On Campus

On Thursday, seniors met in the STHS theatre with school counselors to discuss graduation requirements. With Google slides filled of tips and resources, counselors took questions from seniors, helping them prepare for their final year.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Collegiate hockey is headed to the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena this weekend when the PAC 8 Collegiate Ice Hockey Championships return to the South Shore.

After months of battle on the ice, the field of eight is set to crown this year’s champion of the PAC 8 Hockey Conference.

The four teams from both the North and South Divisions were announced yesterday that will compete for the title in Lake Tahoe this upcoming weekend. With this year’s expansion to twelve teams in the conference, this year’s division battles came down to the final weekend.

Businesses closed Monday in South Lake Tahoe due to weather

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe-area El Dorado County government offices will be closed Monday, February 4 due to weather. This includes the South Lake Tahoe Library.

Schools in South Lake Tahoe, Truckee Tahoe, Incline Village, Zephyr Cove will also be closed. Lake Tahoe Community College is closed.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort is closed.

Due to weather and road conditions, TTD transit routes 19x and 22 are canceled for the day, February 4, 2019.

Dance Classes at the Marcia Sarosik Dance Studio are closed today.

Grizzlies host weekend of hockey in South Lake Tahoe

The South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Association (STAHA) Grizzlies are hosting a weekend of hockey December 15-16 at the Lake Tahoe Ice Arena for their U10, U12 and U14 teams. Opponents include the San Jose Sharks junior team, the Cupertino Cougars and Santa Clara Blackhawks.

The Grizzlies are a youth developmental travel ice hockey program who participate in the Norcal Youth Hockey League. Their 14B team is undefeated and is bringing their 10-0-1 record into the weekend's play.

Public invited to hockey games in South Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Prep Hockey Academy Varsity team has been competing across the country and they bring the action back to their home ice on Saturday at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

Coming off a 7-0 win over Los Gatos at the Solar4Amerian Ice in San Jose on Tuesday, the Tahoe team hosts St. Mary's Preparatory High School Rams on Saturday, November 10 at 1:00 p.m. This game is part of the team's competition in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League.

Family Skate Night to help defray costs for local spinal cord injury victim

South Lake Tahoe resident Rocky Beaty has embarked on a long road to recovery after suffering a spinal cord injury while going gymnastics on May 28, 2018 in a local gym. Beaty fractured his C6 and C7 and was flown to Renown where he underwent a four-plus hour surgery, removing bulging discs, fusing his vertebrae, and placing two rods on the front and back of his spine.

Barton Health welcomes new doctor to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health has announced the addition of Dr. Gregory Burkard, Jr. to their family of care providers.

Burkard is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is an interventional pain and sports medicine physiatrist. This means he is a physician that treats a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, muscles, joints and more.

Washington and USC win first round of Pac 8 Championship in South Lake Tahoe

Friday marked the return of the PAC 8 college hockey championship to the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena. Last year's champion, the UCLA Bruins, return to defend their title.

Along with the Bruins, hitting the ice this weekend will also be Cal Berkeley, University of Washington, University of Oregon, UCLA and Arizona State.

In the early match up Friday, defending champs #4 UCLA Bruins lost to #5 ranked team, the USC Trojans. The score ended up at 4-3.

At 4:00 p.m., the #3 Washington Huskies and the #6 Oregon Ducks met on the ice with the Huskies winning 6-3.

2018 PAC 8 Hockey Championship comes to South Lake Tahoe

College hockey is returning to South Lake Tahoe as the UCLA Bruins attempt to defend their PAC championship upset when they lit up the Tahoe Arena last year. Hitting the ice will also be Cal Berkeley, University of Washington, University of Oregon, UCLA and Arizona State.

Lake Tahoe man's pursuit of Olympic history

South Shore resident Larry Sidney narrowly missed earning a spot on the historic Israeli Olympic Skeleton team headed to PyeongChang in February.

"It's amazingly exciting to be part of it," said Sidney on his return to Lake Tahoe after months of traveling the world and participating in skeleton races in pursuit of an Olympic spot.

South Lake Tahoe hockey games to raise funds for Santa Rosa fire victims

The Santa Rosa Flyers, the amateur youth hockey teams based at Snoopy's Ice in Santa Rosa, Calif., will be in South Lake Tahoe this weekend for season games against South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Association's Tahoe Grizzlies. Thirteen families from the Santa Rosa hockey organization lost their homes in the recent wildfires.

Sierra House principal leaving Lake Tahoe for Vacaville

Ryan Galles, the principal of Sierra House Elementary in South Lake Tahoe, has announced that he is leaving Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

Galles has accepted the position of Director of Elementary Education for the Vacaville Union School District (VUSD), a district with 12,000 students and 10 elementary schools.

Athletes, family and friends enjoyed a night of ice skating and pizza donated Base Camp Pizza. It is inspiring to see the Ski Patrol making inclusion a reality for our athletes by working with the disabled population.

History is made with two Lake Tahoe Grizzlies teams taking state titles

Two South Lake Tahoe hockey teams went to San Jose to compete in the 2017 California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) State Championships, and both came home with a division title.

The Lake Tahoe Grizzlies Pee Wee A and Bantam B hockey teams won their respective divisions during the tournament at Sharks Ice March 31 to April 2.

This is the first time in CAHA history where two teams from one hockey club took home the gold in the same year.

Sierra House wins Let's Move! Active Schools National Award

School physical education at one time was full of jumping jacks, sit ups, pull ups and push ups. Today's physical education at schools has taken on a whole new focus, and Sierra House Elementary in South Lake Tahoe is being honored for what they do on a daily basis.

The school received recognition for their outstanding efforts in creating an active school environment under First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, Her plan is dedicated to ensuring 60 minutes of physical activity a day is the norm in K-12 schools.

Ice skate for free at the SLT Skating Spooktacular

Heavenly Ski Patrollers host Skate Night for kids with special needs

The Heavenly Mountain Resort ski patrol crew will be hosting a free skate night for children with special needs on Friday, April 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena on Rufus Allen Blvd.

They will be offering the positive experience in a social environment they may not have had before by getting the kids on the ice by pushing them in adaptive hockey sleds. After "skating" they will be treated to a pizza party at the rink.

New fee schedule and SnowGlobe on City Council agenda Tuesday

The South Lake Tahoe City Council will look at the new Master Fee schedule during the March 14 meeting, something they do annually. The proposed fees and charges for 2015-16 show no change for users of the recreation center or campground, a $2 to $3 increase in daily golf course fees, a $5 to $15 increase in golf course passes.

South Lake Tahoe ice skaters bring home top honors

The Tahoe Snowflake ice skating team went to the All Stars competition in Vacaville last weekend, bringing home several top honors including two first place trophies and two second place trophies that will be added to the display to the South Tahoe Ice Arena.

All of the skaters who went to Vacaville danced in the first place production number. Also in first place was the oldest of the Tahoe synchronized age-group teams. The two younger teams placed second in their respective categories.

Tahoe Snowflakes Ice Skating Team wins in San Francisco

South Lake Tahoe was well represented during last weekend's Shamrock Competition at the Yerba Buena Ice Skating Center in San Francisco. The Tahoe Snowflakes Youth Ice Skating Team brought home many team and individual trophies.

South Lake Tahoe shaves heads to raise money

The floor of the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena resembled a large hair salon on Friday as almost 100 people, young and old, male and female, had their heads shaved for childhood cancer research. The 4th annual St. Baldrick's fundraiser has raised over $55,000 so far in 2015, and donations are still being accepted.

Christy Smith started the local St. Baldrick's event in 2011 in honor of her grandson, South Tahoe High junior Bailey Johnson. Bailey was a four time Stage 4 cancer survivor by the time he was 5.

Kids can try hockey for free this Saturday

Utah Utes win Pac 8 Hockey Championship at South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena

The University of Utah ice hockey team won the Pac 8 Hockey Conference Sunday in South Lake Tahoe with a 5 to 1 win over the Oregon Ducks.

Number 1 Utah was evening matched on the ice with Number 3 Oregon, but penalties ended up being the difference. The two had met in the 2013 finals which ended with Utah on top as well, so Oregon was looking for revenge.

Pac-8 Hockey championship game in South Lake Tahoe at noon Sunday

The Pac 8 Championship Game is set: The Oregon Ducks against the Utah Utes will meet up at noon on Sunday, February 8 at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

Oregon beat USC on Saturday, 4 to 1 and Utah beat Washington 9-2 during Saturday's semi-final round to set up the final game of the tournament.

Tickets are available on line for $10.

The players and coaches have been using Lakeland Village and Tep's Villa Roma as their base of operations during their stay in South Lake Tahoe this week.

South Lake Tahoe hosts Pac-8 collegiate hockey championships

Collegiate hockey is headed to South Lake Tahoe February 6 through 8 when the Pac-8 Championship is held at the SLT Ice Arena.

Defending 2014 co-champs Arizona State ended the season in first with a 9-1 record but will not be attending this weekend's tournament due to disciplinary action. “The Arizona State PAC-8 team has declined the invitation to participate in this year’s tournament due to a team rule violation," according to the Pac-8 website.

Babe Ruth 2015 Registration

It is now time to sign up to play in the 2015 Babe Ruth season in South Lake Tahoe.

The next sign updates will be on January 21 and 28 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kahle Community Center, February 5 and 25 at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and then again at the Ice Arena at the same time on March 5.

Tryouts will then be held on Sunday March 22 and 29 at 10 a.m.

The Babe Ruth League is expecting a six team with with 12 players on each team. Joining the players on each roster will be a Manager, Coach and Assistant Coach (a Varsity Player).

Findorff named new Tahoe Sports and Entertainment GM

A collegiate Division 1 hockey player and pro prospect was named the new General Manager and Coaching Director for Tahoe Sports and Entertainment, Inc (TSE), the operators of the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

Michael Findorff joins TSE after working for Vail Resorts, most recently as Assistant Manager in Products, Sales and Service. Prior to that Findorff spent two years pursuing a professional hockey career with the New York Islanders and Phoenix Coyotes organizations.

Hockey players from around the world playing for Lake Tahoe Blue this year

Did you know that South Lake Tahoe has a professional ice hockey team? The Lake Tahoe Blue are members of the Western States Hockey League and host teams from across the country at their home ice, the Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

If you were at the South Tahoe High football game last weekend you would have caught a glimpse of the team as they rooted on the Vikings.

World Curling Federation making stop in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe Locals Shaving Heads on Saturday

At least 77 of your neighbors and friends will be participating in the 3rd Annual South Lake Tahoe St. Baldrick's headshaving event on Saturday, March 1 at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena. What was developed by three businessmen from New York City in 1999 as a way to give back to their community has turned into over 1,000 nation wide events each year that are held to raise money to help find cures for childhood cancer. Since becoming a non-profit in 2005, St. Baldrick's Foundation has given out $125,251,567 in grants.
