Free writing workshop for veterans in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/07/2018 - 8:05amThe El Dorado Arts Council is expanding their Veterans’ Voices Writing Workshop to South Lake Tahoe beginning Oct. 1. The free, drop-in workshop is open to all veterans and all skill levels are encouraged. The workshops will be held on Mondays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Community College, Room A206, near the LTCC Veterans Resource Center.

Tahoe Letterpress will open its doors for a studio tour and reception Friday, June 16, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm. Located at Bona Fide Books in Meyers, the print shop will offer hands-on demonstrations and free hand-printed souvenirs to take home. The event is free and open to the public.

There are also sponsorship opportunities available so they can continue to host these exciting community events in Meyers all year round.

Family creates "Little Library" for the Lake Tahoe Community
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/28/2016 - 8:24pmThe South Lake Tahoe community is invited to attend the grand opening of a new, free "Little Library" on Saturday, December 3 at noon outside BioSpirit, located at 1116 Ski Run Blvd.
The Haven family, Kathy and Nick, along with their children Alexi (12), Christopher (11) and Marcus (8) created the free lending library, the first of what they hope will be many around the community.
"We are making a little library so that whoever wants a book can have a book," said Alexi. "Also, people who have extra books, they can donate them to the library. That way everyone has books!"
City of South Lake Tahoe celebrates first 50 years

Those words, said by South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Brian Williams, were echoed throughout the evening as the City of South Lake Tahoe celebrated its first 50 years with a golden anniversary gala Saturday night.
Almost 300 people were at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel to share memories of the past, review of the present, and a look towards the future of a city that was formed because many of the residents were tired of being represented by a government in Placerville.

Modeled after San Francisco's LitQuake, organizers of Tahoe WordWave have gathered creative and inspiring writers, musicians, and performers from around the country to share their talents over a three day experience at Tallac Historic Site. The festival will be interactive, featuring readings, workshops, plays, open mics, guided hikes, and oral storytelling.

Bona Fide Books in Meyers will celebrate "Have Paints, Will Travel" on Friday night. Plein Air painer Ginny Schakerman's art will be on display during the reception which will include music and libations from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 6.
The reception is a kick off to Bona Fide's new community mercantile and print shop. Owner Kim Wyatt has been offering class at the store, from book making to prints.
Schakerman's art will be on display all month at the Meyer's book store.
New "Do It Yourself" boutique opens in South Lake Tahoe

Owner Liza Utzig Schafer, a long time local resident, opened the shop in December and she says she's been busy ever since.
One can call her store an "in-person" Etsy, which is an e-commerce website full of handmade, unique and vintage items and supplies. Schafer's store is full of craft items, locally handmade items as well as things from independent artists.

“Acquainted with the Cold” is Hillyer’s first collection, and it won Bona Fide’s 2011 Melissa Lanitis Gregory Poetry Prize, offered annually in honor of the local artist who died in 2009. The book is concerned with the intersection of nature and city, and takes the reader on an invigorating ode to the seasons.

On Sat. May 5, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 p.m. Bona Fide Books will host an art reception for local photographer and writer Stacy Hicks, featuring her collection “What Remains.” Free and open to the public, the exhibit will feature 16 black and white images. Refreshments will be served.
Hicks, who lives in Strawberry, CA with her son, says that her photographs reveal the things that people often don’t see, and this is what she finds most interesting in her subjects. She favors black and white film, because “It’s more honest.”
