Family creates "Little Library" for the Lake Tahoe Community

The South Lake Tahoe community is invited to attend the grand opening of a new, free "Little Library" on Saturday, December 3 at noon outside BioSpirit, located at 1116 Ski Run Blvd.

The Haven family, Kathy and Nick, along with their children Alexi (12), Christopher (11) and Marcus (8) created the free lending library, the first of what they hope will be many around the community.

"We are making a little library so that whoever wants a book can have a book," said Alexi. "Also, people who have extra books, they can donate them to the library. That way everyone has books!"

Free neighborhood lending libraries have become popular across the country over the past few years. Kim Wyatt, owner of BonaFide Books in Meyers placed the library her husband Mike Patterson built outside of her shop.

The one on Ski Run Blvd will have four shelves, two each for adult and children's books. They plan on having books in both English and Spanish.

"Teresa Bertrand of BioSpirit has been a big supporter and got permission from her landlord to put the library on their property, said Kathy Haven. "It will be in an area of high foot traffic and thus hopefully get used a lot."

Haven said they will take book donations on Saturday, but readers can always drop off a book when they're picking up a new one. She said they hope others in the community create more of the little libraries.

Hot chocolate and free books will be available at the grand opening.
