Gas explosion damages two vehicles, interrupts traffic in Douglas County

An apparent gas main leak at the entrance to the Sunridge subdivision caused an explosion that damaged two vehicles and disrupted traffic on Highway 395 and Mica Drive in Douglas County.

Southbound 395 and westbound Mica Drive now open and moving normally. Northbound 395 is being rerouted via South Sunridge and North Sundridge drives.

A resident who lives nearby, Rick Dodds, a retired Carson City Sheriff deputy, said he witnessed the explosion, and saw it blow dirt and rocks about 100 feet into the air. He said it appeared to have damaged a wall on the property.

October 3, 2015: 11 calls: 7 EMS calls, 1 false alarm, 1 canceled en route, 1 service call "other," 1 unauthorized burning.

Hard Rock water leak less than first reported

As reported on South Tahoe Now Friday, the Hard Rock Lake Tahoe shut down their pool due to a large leak which was releasing chlorinated water into the soil.

The initial leak had been discovered on Thursday, and the pool and pump were shut down until it could be determined where the problem was located.

Water leak at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe shuts down swimming pool

The swimming pool at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe has been shut down due to a water leak.

During a routine inspection by the Douglas County Environmental Health Department on Thursday, it was discovered that there was a possible leak at the outdoor pool according to Ray Gentry, head of security at the South Shore casino. He said they didn't know the nature, or the source, so they notified The Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP) on Thursday afternoon.

Years of water conservation have helped South Lake Tahoe

As one can imagine, Donielle Morse has been very busy lately. As the Water Conservationist specialist for the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD), Morse spends her days informing, teaching and keeping up on the new state water mandates.

Drought or no drought, water conservation is necessary and its the reason South Lake Tahoe is faring better than most communities in the West. Since 2007, local water users have cut back 27% of their annual water usage.

Water Main Breaks: State Route 28 Closed Due to Big Hole in Pavement

Southbound State Route 28 near Hwy 50 is closed Thursday night due to a broken water main.

It is reported that the water main developed a leak and created a big hole in the pavement.

Crews are working to try and get the road opened by Friday morning.

California Governor Jerry Brown has called for a 20% reduction in water usage state wide in order to prepare for the anticipated water shortage not only for 2014, but also in coming years.

Gas leak at lower Kingsbury Grade prompts 'small area' evacuation

A natural gas leak, reported at around 8:50 this morning, has prompted the evacuation of a small area around the 200 block of S.R. 207 Kingsbury Grade, according to Tahoe Douglas Fire Chief Ben Sharit. The initial report came in from the contracting firm Peak Construction. It was reported as a 2-inch gas line leak. The leak was secured quickly by crews and Southwest Gas has arrived, Sharit said. The evacuation area are buildings at 290 Kingsbury Grade near the 7-Eleven.
