Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is one of a handful of California community colleges that has significantly closed equity gaps and increased success rates for Latinx students, according to a new report from the Public Policy Institute of California.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and its new Mobility Hub won the Tallac Achievement Award during the 13th annual Blue Ribbon Awards Thursday evening.

The award is given to an exemplary infrastructure project that revitalizes and enhances the economy and community of Tahoe’s South Shore.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two new thought-provoking art exhibits at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) can be enjoyed in a safe and virtual manner.

In LTCC's Haldan Gallery is Loren Madsen's "Worry Beads," a large sculpture of wood-carved beads strung together like a chain, with each bead representing one year between 1945 to 2017. Each individual bead's size tells a story about how many terrorist-caused deaths occurred in that year globally. It makes for a sublime piece of woodworking skill and a powerful political statement.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce Board recently asked the nine City Council candidates ten questions they felt were of most importance to its members. The questions focused mainly on topics relating to things that will or may affect both the local small businesses and the community in general.

Their board made the decision to not endorse a specific candidate this election, but instead rank them based on how much they align with the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce goals based on their answers to the questions below.

At this point in time, the intersection between equity and climate change has never been clearer. The Sunrise Movement is a national youth climate group that is seeking a future that’s not only sustainable, but also just. With only 11 years left to transform our economy away from fossil fuels to avoid the worst effects of climate change, we need to elect officials now who will defend our future. The remedies for unsustainable practices must work for everyone in this city. That’s why we’re endorsing John Friedrich and Scott Robbins for the city council of South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Student Senate at Lake Tahoe Community College is hosting a City Council Virtual Candidate Forum on Monday Oct. 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. via Zoom.

All are welcome to join.

As of right now, all but two of the candidates have agreed to participate. They’ll share their visions for the community and their thoughts about Measure S.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College offers noncredit citizenship classes along with English as a Second Language (ESL) and High School Equivalency (HSE) courses. Even though registration is wrapping up, the flexibility of these noncredit classes allows students to still get started.

As part of the course, they assist students in filling out forms, provide practice interviews and assist with learning English. While the class is in English, assistance is provided for students in Spanish and other languages, if needed. This quarter, the classes are via live Zoom.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be two new members of the South Lake Tahoe City Council after the November 3 election. In the coming weeks the pubic will have chances to hear from the candidates both via zoom, in print and possibly in person. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College's Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy just graduated its 14th class of firefighters. There were added challenges due to the coronavirus and restrictions on classroom instruction, but with the flexibility of instructors, the state, and the college, the Fire Academy was one of the lucky programs that was able to complete training this year.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19 in our community, the Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation is hosting its annual Taste of Gold fundraiser as a virtual event this year through July 18. Funds raised from this event support the Lake Tahoe College Promise program that provides up to three years of tuition-free college for eligible students of all ages, a free textbook lending library, and the Lake Tahoe Community College Food Pantry, which provides crucial nutrition and personal hygiene products to LTCC’s neediest students.

With its decision last week, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a real sense of relief and a bit of a reprieve to approximately 800,000 DREAMers in America, including 200,000 in California alone. When the justices sided with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, ruling that the way the Trump administration rescinded the program in 2017 was unlawful, it was a big victory for immigrant communities and their many allies.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Intensive Spanish Summer Institute (ISSI) at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is a one-week award-winning Spanish immersion experience. Normally held in person in South Lake Tahoe, this year it is a week-long virtual event through Zoom July 27 - July 31 and August 3 - August 7.

It’s difficult to find the right words. Even now, a week after the on-camera murder of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, by police officers, and all of the fallout felt nationwide, I’m still trying to understand the world, how to respond as a community leader, and how to explain it to my kids. All of the frustration, sadness, and outrage — it all seems so familiar since we’ve all been witness to these acts before, all seen and read and heard about cases of unarmed black people and other people of color killed in police custody when it was clearly avoidable.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County officials announced Sunday they will open two appointment-only community sites for COVID-19 testing for any resident wanting to be tested for the virus, one in South Lake Tahoe and the other in Shingle Springs.

These sites follow Governor Newsom's announcement last week to add more than 80 community COVID-19 testing sites across the state, focusing on underserved communities. His goal is to test 60,000 to 80,000 people per day for the virus as the state prepares to reopen.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.

Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?

Move it online, of course.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif, - The entire campus of Lake Tahoe Community College will be closed to students, the public and most employees starting Friday, March 20 due to the quickly evolving COVID-19 situation.

On Thursday, both California Governor Gavin Newsom and El Dorado County issued shelter-in-place orders, the state's order beginning Thursday and the County's Friday night.

The South Lake Tahoe campus was nearing the end of the winter quarter when the announcement was made.

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) took additional steps on Friday to help curb the spread of the Novel Coronavirus related to fitness classes. They sent out an email to staff and students, letting them know of closures but some do affect community members who use the gym and facilities.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The threat of the coronavirus COVID-19 has prompted more events and activities to be postponed or canceled in the South Lake Tahoe area. At this time there are no confirmed cases in El Dorado, Douglas, or Carson City counties.

Increase reliance on clean, renewable energy sources to power the District’s facilities, in line with and in collaboration with, the City of South Lake Tahoe’s recent pledge to power 100 percent of our electricity use with renewable energy by 2030.

Welcome to the ninth year summary of the SnowGlobe Music Festival. This is the first year the TRPA has done any monitoring and the event continues to violate TRPA’s pre-existing rules. We can add air pollution to the list of accomplishments for this event given the recent successful lawsuit by the Center for Environmental Health (CEH). Onsite inspections for building and fire continue to find violations (they have had violations every year) and the fireworks were moved to an open undeveloped area in the forest of Bijou Park this year.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A winter storm is currently delivering heavy snow and creating unsafe road conditions in the Lake Tahoe Basin. There are several updates to roads and schools for Thursday at 5:00 p.m.:

Due to numerous spinouts, traffic on US50 is being held at Twin Bridges. Crews are also in the region performing avalanche control.

SR89 at Emerald Bay is closed due to unsafe conditions. No estimated time of reopening.
