Sierra Nevada College on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe has been awarded a five year grant to develop infrastructure for health-related research and STEM education in the state of Nevada. The National Institutes of Health program grant was given jointly also to the University of Nevada, Reno; UNLV, College of Southern Nevada; Great Basin College; Nevada State College; University of Nevada School of Medicine; Western Nevada College; and Truckee Meadows Community College.

When people visit Tahoe for the first time, they marvel at the extraordinary natural landscape and fresh, clean air. At the same time, some are shocked at the dilapidated condition of the built environment: rundown buildings, crumbling infrastructure, and tired-looking development. The paradox is compelling. Despite TRPA’s mandate to harmonize the natural and human-made landscapes so that they blend together, outdated development that preceded environmental standards now serves as blight in our community.

The following is the ski, snowboard and weather report for Thursday, March 3, 2016 for South Lake Tahoe brought to you by Lake Tahoe SkiBum.

Weather - South Lake Tahoe will have a high today of 52 and a low tonight of 32. Today: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph. Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 32. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south in the evening.

The ski race season is in full swing for area high schools, with five races already completed. After Monday's slalom race at Heavenly Mountain Resort, South Tahoe High leads the Tahoe Basin Ski League with four girls and four boys in the top ten in their respective divisions.

Whittell High School's Payton Norton leads all boys in the league with his teammate Gunnar Barnwell currently in 10th place.

There are winds today so lift statuses may change throughout the day.

Lake Tahoe rose almost two inches yesterday which equals 63.9 billion gallons of added water.

The National Weather Service in Reno has provided this chart on how much water actually was in yesterday's storm. As of 5 a.m. Tuesday, they report the lake rose 1.92 inches and more precipitation is expected today and Thursday.

All waterways through El Dorado County were rising on Monday, prompting local flood warnings which have now expired. Placerville received 3.08 inches of rain in this storm ad they are now at 97% of average for season to date totals.

After Monday's and Tuesday's snowstorm in Lake Tahoe, two more large ski resorts have announced their opening date, well ahead of planned.

Squaw Valley an Alpine Meadows have been making snow, and combined with what Mother Nature brought, they are able to open. Alpine Meadows is opening for the season on Thursday, November 12 at 9:00 a.m., a month ahead of the planned December 11 scheduled date. They plan on operating Kangaroo Chair as well as limited dining options.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

WinterWonderGrass Tahoe Festival is returning for its second year at Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows in Lake Tahoe, California April 1-3, 2016. Drawing from Olympic Valley’s natural beauty and mountain lifestyle as inspiration for the event, these fine ingredients of the North Lake Tahoe lifestyle are brought together at WinterWonderGrass Tahoe to create the ultimate community gathering.

Snow blanketed the highest runs at Heavenly Mountain Resort over the weekend, exciting the inner skier in many. Could this be a sign of what El Nino has in store for Lake Tahoe this year?

While experts have differing opinions, the ski resorts are betting on a big snow year as they wrap up their season pass sales.

October 11 is the last day for Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar resort pass sales which range from $449 for the adult Tahoe Value Pass to $789 for their Epic Pass.

6:15 p.m. update 9/15/15:

New evacuation advisories were put up at the scene of the large Butte Fire on Tuesday.

Expect smoke to continue filling the Lake Tahoe basin on Saturday and, depending on the wind, into next week. Over the past few days, winds have pushed smoke from wildfires in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest into the Lake Tahoe Basin as well as nearby Truckee Meadows.

On Friday afternoon, air quality levels in Reno were in the range of "unhealthy for sensitive groups" to "unhealthy" but South Lake Tahoe fared much better with quality range in the "good" range. For the next six days, air is expected to stay in "moderate" range on the South Shore.

8 p.m. update 8/18/15:

The Walker Fire has now burned 3,715 acres and is now 35% contained. It has been determined that the fire is human caused and is under investigation.

There are 484 firefighters working on the fire along with 4 helicopters, 2 Air tankers, 34 Engines, 10 Crews, 6 Water Tenders, and 4 Dozers.

235 structures remain threatened but none have burned so far.

This week, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency voiced its strong support for legislation to reauthorize the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act that has been introduced in Congress by Tahoe’s Senate delegation.

Sponsored by U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-Nevada) along with Harry Reid (D-Nevada), Dianne Feinstein (D-California), and Barbara Boxer (D-California), the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act would authorize up to $415 million in federal funding over 10 years to help continue critical environmental restoration work at Lake Tahoe.

State Route 89 (El Dorado/Placer County) from Wilson Avenue to Elm Street: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 7 a.m. to noon Friday for bump grinding. Motorists can also expect one-way traffic from McKinney Drive to Madden Creek around the clock from 8 p.m. Tuesday to noon Friday for roadway excavation.
