CHP motorcycle safety campaign launched
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/17/2015 - 8:41amCalifornia continues to experience high numbers of motorcycle-involved collision deaths and injuries, and because of this the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has been awarded a grant to promote motorcycle safety and awareness.
The goal of "Have a Good Ride II" is to reduce the number of motorcycle-involved fatal and injurty traffic collisions statewide.
Stabbing at Halloween party in South Lake Tahoe

Just as they were handling the arrest of seven people that were found with bandanas over their faces and guns and drugs in their car, officers were called to the scene of a stabbing.
While attending a party at a Silverwood Avenue vacation rental, 21-year-old Josh Boyer of South Lake Tahoe was stabbed multiple times during a fight with several other party attendees.

An large crowd of family, friends and law enforcement paid their respects both along the route from the funeral home in Carson City to the church and at the church.
Deadline approaching for Celebrity Golf donations

The money comes from the 26th American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament held in South Lake Tahoe in July.
Drought threatens Lake Tahoe Cave Rock water system

Lake residents get their water from the Lake, once famed for its clarity.
But with the surface continuing to drop, Douglas is looking at means to ensure the water keeps flowing.
County Engineer Nick Charles told Douglas County commissioners at a workshop on Thursday that the Lake level was about 4 inches from activating a Stage 2 drought.

There will be a memorial service for South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell and his wife, Jeanne Hounsell on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at LifePoint Church in Minden, Nev.
The couple was killed along with a family friend in a single vehicle rollover accident near Fallon, Nev on Saturday, October 17. Hounsell's four children were also in the car, but survived with minor to moderate injuries.
Fundraising campaign for family of SLT Police Officer Mark Hounsell

All four of Mark's children were in the 2004 Chevy Suburban on October 17, 2015 with Mark and Jeanne when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed, killing all three adults inside.
Meyers connects to South Lake Tahoe with Class 1 bike trail

Members of the El Dorado County project team were on hand along with current Area 5 Supervisor Sue Novasel and former Supervisor Norma Santiago. Partner agency staff were also there to celebrate the completion.
American Century Championship to give away another $55,600 to local charities

LTVA is now accepting applications from local nonprofits for distributions of $55,600 as a result of the 26th American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.
South Lake Tahoe breast cancer survivor shares her story
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/09/2015 - 2:14pmSeptember 11 evokes a different meaning to South Lake Tahoe resident Christine O’Farrell. In 2002, on the one-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Christine was on the operating table at Barton Memorial Hospital facing a new threat: cancer.
Christine had been diagnosed with an aggressive case of breast cancer. At the time, she was 42 years old and working at Barton’s Home Health and Hospice for quality assurance and infection prevention. Her three children were 14, 12, and 9.
South Lake Tahoe man with ALS inspires acts of kindness

Though not related, about 70 graduates, most of them from the Class of 1984, came together over the weekend to honor another one of their classmates stricken with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
Kevin Sullivan, 50, is the second graduate of South Tahoe High's class of '84 to afflicted with ALS. Todd Fields died in 1999 at the age of 33.
Give Blood, Get a t-shirt in South Lake Tahoe

Fourteen years ago 2,977 people died as terrorists hijacked four passenger planes, smashing two into the World Trade Center in New York. A third jetliner rammed into the Pentagon outside Washington while a fourth one crash-landed on an empty field in Pennsylvania.
Carson City IHOP shooting victims, survivors remembered

Four years ago Sunday, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and civilian Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe, were killed in the shooting rampage, in which the mentally ill gunman took his own life. Two other soldiers and seven patrons suffered injuries.
Dr. Clint Purvance named new Barton Health President and CEO

Dr. Purvance has served as Chief Medical Officer for Barton Health for the past eight years. He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and has practiced medicine at Barton Memorial Hospital since 1999.

Memorial Paddle Out to be held in deputy's honor at El Dorado Beach

In lieu of the normal Wednesday night SUP series, the paddling community will be holding the paddle-out but those that want to stay on the shore are welcome to participate as well.

The U.S. Forest Service and cooperating fire agencies will escort Hallenbeck from the "Y" in South Lake Tahoe to his final resting place. The procession will start at approximately 10 a.m. and proceed westbound on Highway 50 up Echo Summit, through Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort, down to Placerville. It is expected to end at 2 p.m.

Whittell senior wins Gene Upshaw Memorial Scholarhip

Identities of those involved in deadly motorcycle crash released

At 8:26 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, a Nissan truck driven by 54-year-old Michael Cearley made a left hand from Lake Tahoe Blvd onto Modesto Avenue, right in the path of a motorcyclist and his passenger who were riding westbound on Lake Tahoe Blvd.
Officer identified in South Lake Tahoe shooting

Officer Joshua Klinge was the officer who responded to a 2:40 a.m. call about a woman screaming and crying at the Tahoe Hacienda Inn on Lake Tahoe Blvd. The officer shot Jackson in the torso after feeling threatened according to earlier reports. Jackson died shortly afterwards at Barton Memorial Hospital.

Victim in Sunday's motorcycle crash in South Lake Tahoe dies
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/09/2015 - 2:36pmThe woman riding on the back of the motorcycle involved in a crash in South Lake Tahoe on July 5 has died as a result of her injuries according to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
The woman, who's age and identity has not been released, died Monday at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno after being airlifted there after the 8:26 p.m. accident.

The new Price Estimator Tool gives patients an estimated cost for a planned surgery or medical imaging service at Barton Memorial Hospital. It allows patients to financially plan for a procedure and simplify their billing process by knowing their estimated costs prior to a procedure.

Standoff at the Tahoe Keys Marina ends with arrest of suspect

More details of Saturday's arrest have been released by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
As the pursuit of a car driven by 35-year-old Cory Pearson of Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe ended at the Tahoe Keys Marina, officers were able to establish a perimeter around his vehicle which had been reported stolen in Lakeland Village. Pearson yelled to officers that he was armed with a gun and threatened to use it if anyone approached. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) SWAT Team and Crisis Response Team were called to assist.
Motorcyclist killed in crash on US 50 in Zephyr Cove Saturday

A 2015 Nissan Versa, driven by 31-year-old Alma Jaramillo-Garcia of Moxee, WA was driving eastbound on Highway 50 near N. Martin Drive. For unknown reasons she drifted into the westbound lane into the path of a 2015 Harley-Davidson motorcycle ridden by 53-year-old Amber Hallmark of Antioch, CA.

One man died early Monday morning after being shot by a South Lake Tahoe Police officer.
Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a call at 2:40 a.m. at the Tahoe Hacienda Inn on Highway 50. The caller said they heard the sounds of a woman screaming and crying.
About ten minutes after officers arrived, a man in his 20s was shot in the torso.

Sheriff's OHV team making Rubicon Trail safer for Jeepers

The mission of the team is to provide education to the public, maintain the family friendly atmosphere and when necessary, use enforcement to support that education. In its fifteenth year on the Rubicon Trail, the OHV team is again helmed by Sergeant Bryan Brown and staffed with one full-time seasonal deputy and eight part-time deputies who work the OHV team, in addition to their usual duties.
Free concerts every Friday and Saturday at Heavenly Village

This annual series of live music takes place every Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Project: State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $25 million project from the "Y" junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be added in the 1.1-mile four-lane section, and the highway will be widened in the two-lane section to Visitor Center Road to provide 4-foot paved shoulders on each side. Drainage systems are also being built and the roadway will be resurfaced. Completion is expected by spring 2017.
