Douglas County reports increase in thefts from unlocked cars
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/23/2017 - 8:27pmThe Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is advising the public of an increase in vehicle burglaries in the county recently. There have been several reported cases of suspects getting into unlocked cars, just as there has been in South Lake Tahoe.
In Douglas County the increase began in the last two weeks and have up to this point have occurred in the Gardnerville Ranchos, Gardnerville and Minden. The losses during these car burglaries have been coin change and cell phones but any loss causes emotional and financial damage.

New zip line to go through treetops in South Lake Tahoe this summer
Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/14/2017 - 6:22pmThe Silver Rush, a new 4,159-foot long zip line opening this summer at Heavenly's Epic Discovery, will take users from tree-to-tree at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. Overlooking the Carson Valley, Silver Rush is comprised of five segmented zip lines; the final of which flies guests over the waters of East Peak Lake.
Once the ride is completed, guests enjoy a scenic ATV ride back to the top of the Gondola. It is a three-hour long experience.

Van der Breggen rode into the final race day one second behind UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling’s Katie Hall (Saratoga, Calif.) and earned valuable Sprint points during today’s Sacramento circuit race to take the overall race victory by one second. Today’s result also keeps Van der Breggen at the top of the UCI world rankings.

Hall, who races for UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team, placed 17 in Stage 3.
The winner was American Coryn Rivera who races for Team Sunweb from the Netherlands.

Katie Hall of the United States crossed the finish line first, edging Dutch cyclist Anna van der Breggen by 21 seconds.
Bijou Market Place approved by South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/11/2017 - 7:44pmGoing away is the Knight's Inn, and in its place will be Bijou Market Place. Halferty Development today announced the name of their South Lake Tahoe project that was formerly known as Bijou Park Creek Watershed Management Southwest Corner Project.
During Thursday's Planning Commission meeting, the commissioners unanimously adopted the resolution that certified the project's Initial Study, Mitigated Negative Declaration, Initial Environmental Checklist and Mitigated Finding of no significant affect. They also approved the permits so now Halferty Development can move forward.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/11/2017 - 5:24pmOne doesn't have to be a fan of professional cycling to enjoy the first two stages of the Amgen Breakwaway From Heart Disesase Women's Race Empowered with SRAM in South Lake Tahoe. People lined the streets Thursday as racers went on a trip around the lake with both the start and finish lines at Heavenly Mountain Resort, and the same is expected on Friday.
American Megan Guarnier won stage 1 with a time of 3 hours, 3 minutes and 48 seconds to make the 117 km (72.7 mile) trip. The former Bay Area resident is on the Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team out of Holland.
Almost 1,500 lbs of trash collected during Clean Tahoe's “Spring Clean”event

On Saturday May 6th, 118 volunteers scoured South Tahoe neighborhoods to help clean it up and kick off the summer with a litter-free town. The groups covered fifteen different locations and gathered 1,484 pounds of trash and debris from our environment.
Monitor Pass opens with almost 20 feet of snow still along roadway

Monitor Pass/State Route 89 opened Monday afternoon, while District 10 maintenance crews continue to clear Sonora Pass/SR-108 and Ebbetts Pass/SR-4. Yosemite National Park handles the clearing of Tioga Pass/SR-120.
After the wettest winter in over 100 years there are still some areas of upper passes with 20 feet of snow.
Family Resource Center's 14th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival Friday

The South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center (FRC) is holding their 14th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival on Friday, May 5 starting at 5:00 p.m. at Heavenly Mountain Resort. The community is invited to join them for an "all you can eat" Mexican food buffet, dancing with live music and a fabulous raffle.
Tickets can be purchased at the center for $20 or at the door for $25. Children ages 6-12 are $10 and 5 and under are free. Raffle tickets for chances at prizes donated by local businesses are available for $5 each of 5/$20.
Squaw Valley attempting to keep one lift open all summer long

Ready for a week of sun? Warming trend in store for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/28/2017 - 9:02amAs Heavenly Mountain Resort celebrates a final weekend of skiing, those looking for warmer weather for biking, walking or yard work should have a week of nice and mild temps in Lake Tahoe. While not quite sunbathing weather, the highs will be creeping towards 70 before another system hits the area at the end of next week.
Because of the warmer temperatures, there is a flood advisory in effect for area rivers due to snow melt.

Volunteers sought for Amgen Women's Race in Lake Tahoe

Positions include course marshals, security and check-in. Marshals assist race staff and local law enforcement authorities along the route monitoring pedestrian traffic, road closures, and updating spectators as the race progresses. No experience is necessary.
NDOT: SR28 striping rescheduled; Lane shift at bottom of Spooner

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will be reducing traffic down to one lane in each direction, and shifting it slightly to the south, starting the evening of Tuesday, April 25 and into early May.

South Lake Tahoe 5th-Graders take part in Winter Adventure Program

Nearly 300 fifth-grade students from Lake Tahoe Unified School District (TLUSD) took part in the EpicPromise Winter Adventure Program over five days in January and March. The program includes a ride up the ski resort’s Aerial Tram, snowshoeing, and getting hands-on learning experiences at a trio of educational stations.

Romano shares his knowledge from decades of experience growing food in the Sierra Nevada. Despite the challenging mountain climate and soil, he has successfully grown food on his 65-acre organic farm and shares hard-earned tips, essential for home gardeners and small farmers.
This interesting, inspiring and free event is presented in partnership by the Friends of the Library and the UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe.

6th annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show

The sixth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held April 28-29, 2017 in the South Tahoe Middle School multipurpose room.
Space is being increased to allow more vendors from the region to participate in the only event of its type on the South Shore. A free children's planting area is also being added to the two day show that runs from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m on Saturday.

In honor of Earth Day, the City of South Lake Tahoe joined at least 26 other municipalities in the United States, and the latest in a growing coalition of mountain communities, to commit to 100 percent clean and renewable electricity by the year 2032.

Crews clearing seasonally closed Sierra passes, some opening dates projected
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/16/2017 - 10:35amSnow, rocks, boulders, trees and debris are being cleared from roads through the Sierra Nevada that have been closed all winter. Caltrans crews from Districts 9 and 10 are plowing through several feet of snow in some area. While some roads will be opening soon, many have a lot of work to be done before they can open to traffic.
Crews will inspect the road, bridges, culverts to make sure the road is safe for the public before reopening. They will also replace signs that tumbled during the winter.

Liberty Utilities invites public to new 50 MW Solar Energy Center

A new solar energy project will be unveiled to the public on Wednesday, April 19 at 9:30 a.m. in the town of Luning, Nevada. Since going on line, the new 50 MW Luning Solar Energy Center has supplied 25 percent of Liberty Utilities' customers’ energy needs with clean, renewable energy.
The Luning center is located on Highway 361 at Mile Marker 25, approximately a three-hour drive from South Lake Tahoe.
“We’re very excited to share this official opening with our customers and the community of Luning,” stated Travis Johnson, Liberty Utilities’ VP of Electric Operations.

Intrawest Resorts Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: SNOW) is a leading North American mountain resort and adventure company.
