22 disabled veterans heading to Lake Tahoe for special week at Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/11/2018 - 12:06pmTwenty-two injured veterans will arrive at the Reno-Tahoe airport Sunday evening and head to Squaw Valley / Alpine Meadows for 3rd annual Military to the Mountains program through March 17, 2018.
Eight of the veterans are residents of the Reno/Sparks area and will join the arrival celebration at 7:45 p.m. at the airport near the ski statue.
The week long adaptive ski week is sponsored by High Fives Foundation, Adaptive Training Foundation, City of Reno, Achieve Tahoe and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

This purchase now gives DiamondRock four resorts in California including the Hotel Rex in San Francisco and the Westin San Diego. The Landing will be added to their portfolio which also includes L'Auberge de Sedona in Arizona, Vail Marriott Mountain Resort & Spa and several other Marriott and Westin properties.

Residents, businesses and non-profits are being brought together to assess the current "state of the arts" on the South Shore.

South Lake Tahoe JoAnn Conner will be at Camp Richardson on March 11 at 11:00 a.m. for "Sunday Morning With a Local Author."
Conner, who has written two books will be giving an author talk and book signing.
The first, Heartwood, is historical fiction centered in 1867 Bridgeport, CA, but also adds historical bits about Carson City, Genoa, and Virginia City. Information about the everyday life is historically accurate.
Tahoe Search and Rescue locate two skiers at Heavenly
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/05/2018 - 8:42pmTwo skiers who went out of bounds at Heavenly Mountain Resort Sunday were found safe and uninjured at approximately 6:50 p.m. March 4, 2018.
The pair were in waist deep snow and had trouble getting out according to El Dorado County Sheriff Sgt. Anthony Prencipe. They called for help and Tahoe Search and Rescue responded at about 5:30 p.m.
Prencipe said they two skiers, whose names and hometowns were not released, were uninjured and able to ski out on their own once help arrived.
Mother and son die in snow slide at Kirkwood
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/05/2018 - 5:19pmA woman and her son visiting with other family members at Kirkwood Ski Resort on Sunday, March 4 died in a snow slide near their condominium, according to the Alpine County Sheriff's Office.
Olga Perkovic, 50, and her seven-year-old son were reported missing at 6:40 p.m. They had last been seen on Chair Seven at 4:00 p.m. The search was focused on that area.
At 9:00 p.m., a neighbor of the missing pair noticed ski gloves on the snow adjacent to their condominium. The neighbor investigated the gloves and found the pair buried underneath three feet of snow. They were unconscious.

Lake Tahoe digging out

Multiple accidents, road closures and heavy snow greeted them throughout the day and night. A winter storm warning is in effect for South Lake Tahoe until 10:00 a.m. Saturday.
It is a cold start to the morning Saturday with 13 degrees at 8:00 a.m. The forecast high for the day is 27. Expect snow showers after 5:00 p.m. with scattered snow showers during the day with an additional 1-3" possible, and another 1-3" possible overnight. Winds 5-10 mph.

SAR volunteers aid in search of Bay Area man missing in Yosemite

Oakland resident Alan Chow, 36, had his backpacking gear and wilderness permit when he set out on a solo hike Saturday, February 17 on the loop trail in Yosemite's northern wilderness area above Hetch Hetchy, about a mile from O'Shaughnessy Dam.
He became disoriented and lost his way.
SAR volunteers spend night with skier near Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/23/2018 - 10:10amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Douglas County, El Dorado County and Washoe County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, paramedics and Blackhawk rescue helicopters all assisted in the location and retrieval of two skiers who went missing at Heavenly Mountain Resort Thursday evening.
Douglas County 911 operators received a call on February 22 at 5:00 p.m. from two male adults who said they were lost at the resort. They said they had some water, but were wet and cold, their cell phone batteries were diminished, and one of the skiers suffered from a medical condition.
As storm passes Lake Tahoe, sunny but cold weekend ahead
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/23/2018 - 9:16amUp to a foot of snow fell in the upper elevations of Lake Tahoe during Thursday's storm, with several inches at lake level. As of 9:00 a.m. Friday, controls remain on mountain roads including Highway 50, I-80, SR-88, SR-89, SR-207, SR-431 and SR-28.
The forecast from the National Weather Service in Reno:
Below average temperatures will dominate through at least next week as low pressure remains over the West. A weak system Saturday will bring breezy conditions along with a few snow showers, generally north of Interstate 80. Another stronger system is possible Monday into Tuesday

Solutions being sought to alleviate tourist traffic in Meyers
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/20/2018 - 3:51pmHoliday traffic leaving South Lake Tahoe this weekend created another bottleneck in Meyers as well as on side roads throughout the area from those attempting to find a quicker getaway. The choices they made Monday created a three-hour drive from the Y in South Lake Tahoe to areas in Meyers.
Highway 50 over Echo Summit is designed to handle 1,200 cars per hour without any issues, but those numbers dropped Monday, February 19. Just how much they dropped is unknown as the traffic counters normally placed over the roadway are removed for snow removal.

Chain controls on Sierra roads; slick conditions causing travel issues

There are currently areas of freezing fog and heavy snow, with whiteouts on some higher elevations roads. With this being a holiday weekend, expect more traffic than normal.

Sierra House Elementary holds Olympic Games ceremony
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/09/2018 - 3:35pmSierra House Elementary School celebrated the opening of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games on Friday morning with lots of excitement. They had the torch, the cheering fans, the Olympic flag and the national anthem.
A torch relay started at 9:15 a.m. with torch bearing students running their portion of the relay before passing it on to the next runner. The relay circled the school a few times, with each passing of a runner drawing cheers from the crowd of students, parents and faculty.

The Women's Stage 2 and Men’s Stage 6 at South Lake Tahoe will both include iconic vistas, stunning lake views, highest summit in race history at Luther Pass, and the grueling Daggett Pass along Kingsbury Grade state Route 207 on May 18.
Proposed improvements at Heavenly released
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/07/2018 - 2:17pmThe U.S. Forest Service has released their draft decision for proposed improvements to existing skiing and snowboarding terrain at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Much of the work will be done on runs outside of the Lake Tahoe Basin boundary.
Those proposed improvements would include selective widening of ski trails, removing trail obstacles and relocation and/or realignment of some portions of existing snowmaking air and water pipelines to improve user experience, maintain user safety, increase energy and water efficiency, and maintain native species.

South Lake Tahoe man sentenced to 183-years to life for brutal attack

Manuel Ovidio Ramos-Munoz was found guilty in November, 2017 on seven felony counts, including kidnapping for the purpose of committing a sexual assault, as well as six additional counts and numerous special allegations relating to the subsequent sexual assault of the victim.
Douglas County Search and Rescue recruiting new volunteers

DCSAR is a highly qualified and respected team comprised of approximately 50 trained volunteer members within the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and responds to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are frequently called out to assist surrounding counties in their rescues, it requires a considerable commitment, but is tremendously rewarding when a life is saved.

SNC student's project brings new shed to Bijou Bike Park

The 23-year-old Sierra Nevada College student is majoring in sustainability with a focus on entrepreneurship. When he graduates in May he is committed to Tahoe Shed Company of South Lake Tahoe.
He has already hit the road running.
For Park's senior project he teamed up with Bret Hackett, owner of green builder Healthy Home Consultants and Tahoe Shed Company, to bring a new and secure shed to Bijou Bike Park.
Stanford professor at Tahoe: There is a way to stop global warming,

"It’s been an extreme year in California, and not only the rest of the U.S. but other parts of the world," said Diffenbaugh. "The warming we are seeing is not consistent with natural forcing alone.”

The 26-year-old Sierra-at-Tahoe skier has a chance.
The U.S. freeski team added four more athletes to its halfpipe roster for PyeongChang on Friday night.
Alex Ferreira and Torin Yater-Wallace are joining David Wise on the men's team, while Brita Sigourney and Devin Logan are joining South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman on the women's team.
"Ski With A Ranger" returns to Heavenly

Every Monday and Friday, the tours will start at 1:00 p.m. at Tamarack Lodge at the top of the gondola.
The tours last approximately one-hour and continue through April 6, 2018, weather permitting.

Last weekend for snowboarders and skiers to qualify for 2018 Winter Olympics

The results will help determine who the U.S. sends to next month's Winter Olympics in these disciplines.

I-80 over Donner Pass has had chain controls go up at about 7:00 p.m. but Highway 50 over Echo Summit just saw chain controls go up at 10:15 p.m.

Snowpack near record lows spells trouble for western water supplies
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/17/2018 - 9:34pmMonths of exceptionally warm weather and an early winter snow drought across big swaths of the West have left the snowpack at record-low levels in parts of the Central and Southern Rockies, raising concerns about water shortages and economic damage.
Drought spread across large parts of the Western United States this month, and storms that moved across the region in early January made up only a small part of the deficit. Runoff from melting snow is now projected to be less than 50 percent of average in key river basins in the central and southern Rockies.
