“We are eager to welcome our guests back to the mountain and are thrilled that opening day is just a week away,” said Greg Dallas, President and CEO of Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge. “Our team has worked tirelessly on a reopening plan that keeps the safety of our guests and staff as the top priority.”
Vail awards $2.8 million in grant support to 76 Lake Tahoe area nonprofits

Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood recently held a breakfast to honor the recipients. The followed with a similar celebration at Northstar, the third area Vail resort.

Cross-country skiing returns to Spooner Lake State Park
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/22/2019 - 10:53amOnce again, Spooner Lake State Park offers outdoor sports enthusiasts a system of meandering cross-country ski trails that wind through dense forest, across an open meadow and along the banks of Spooner Lake.
This trail system is free to the public and made possible by a partnership between Nevada State Parks and Nevada Nordic, a non-profit group based in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The scenic, intermediate trail includes several teardrop loops with flat rolling terrain, which makes it great for both families and experienced skiers. For current trail conditions visit nevadanordic.org.
Vallejo man dies snowboarding at Northstar California Resort
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/17/2019 - 11:24pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Placer County Sheriff's Office announced Saturday that a 40-year-old man from Vallejo died at Northstar California Resort Wednesday, March 13.
Danieson Crowder went on a solo snowboarding trip Monday and when he hadn't been heard from by March 13 he was reported missing.
Northstar ski patrol began searching for Crowder inside the resort area while Placer County Sheriff’s Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue team began searching out-of-bounds. The ski patrol located Crowder in a tree well.
Body of Carnelian Bay woman found one mile from car crash on SR28
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/07/2019 - 8:09pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 46-year-old Carnelian Bay woman was found Thursday morning after Placer County Search & Rescue teams had been looking for her since a Monday afternoon car accident.
Kathryn "Lani" Jones was found on a popular hiking and snowshoe trail about one-half mile from her home.
Free Nordic skiing back at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/06/2019 - 10:43pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Through a private-public partnership, California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation successfully brought back free Nordic skiing at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park along Lake Tahoe’s West shore.
The public can ski on the trails made famous when the 1960 Winter Olympics’ biathlon and cross-country events were held there, designed at the time by South Lake Tahoe's Martin Hollay.
There have been various threats to the continued grooming of the cross-country ski trails at Sugar Pine Point due to funding shortages.
Search ends for missing skier at Heavenly Mountain Resort
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/19/2019 - 9:32amUPDATE 12:30 p.m. - Heavenly Ski Patrol, with the assistance of a K9 search dog, have located the body of Brett Herrick in the Aries Woods, about 100 feet from the groomed trail. He was immersed in deep snow and found at about 10:00 a.m.
Initial investigation indicates Herrick crashed into very deep powder and could not self-rescue and likely suffocated or died from exposure. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The next of kin has been notified.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ski on the trails made famous in the 1960 Winter Olympics during a free ski day at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Saturday, February 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation are bringing back groomed Nordic skiing at the park and have invited the public to enjoy the sport in the same spot the biathlon and cross-country events of the Olympics were held.
The latest round of winter storms has brought in plenty of fresh snow for the park to offer this popular pastime.
Vail Resorts gives $1.9M to 93 Tahoe-Truckee area nonprofits

Across the company, Vail Resorts will give $11.4 million in support to more than 250 community non-profits over the upcoming year.
Each year Vail gives away money and product to groups serving the communities they have resorts located. For Kirkwood, Heavenly and Northstar, support was given to support the health and resilience of the Truckee and South Lake Tahoe communities.

Squaw Valley - Body of missing boarder found, avalanche injures 5

Rocklin resident Wenyu Zhang, 42-years-old, was found deceased this morning by Squaw Valley Ski Patrol. A search area was narrowed through the use of a tracker program used by the resort.
Truckee rock climber falls to his death overnight
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/08/2018 - 3:14pmA Truckee man died after falling more than 100 feet down a cliff Wednesday night, Placer County sheriff's officials said.
The Placer Search and Rescue and Nordic teams responded when they received a call of a fallen hiker at 10:00 p.m. near Squaw Valley.
The unidentified man was with two friends in the area of Big Chief, just east of Highway 89 and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Ski Resort. The men, in their 20s and 30s, did some rock climbing during daylight hours and then went to hike to the top of Big Chief after dark with their headlamps on.
Seven people missing on Rubicon Trail overnight rescued
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/05/2018 - 12:53pmLAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Seven people on a four-wheeling trip along the Rubicon Trail near Sunday became stuck in snow and unable to get out on their own. They were near Miller Lake, west of Meeks Bay and Lake Tahoe.
On Monday, February 5, Placer County Sheriff's Office received a phone call from family members when the group did not return as planned.

Lost snowboarder at Alpine Meadows found safe

The Placer County Sheriff's Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team are currently hiking with him out of the back country.

A 32-year-old snowboarder is missing on the back side of Alpine Meadows Ski Resort after he became separated from a friend.
Twelve searchers from the Placer County Sheriff's Tahoe Nordic search and rescue teams are working on a full search.

North Shore agencies coordinate efforts to check on residents' safety
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/13/2017 - 7:21pmDue to ongoing power outages and damage caused by extreme winter conditions in Lake Tahoe, a West Shore Safety Assessment Operation is being coordinated by a group of local agencies led by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) and North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) to make sure residents are safe. Other participants include the Placer County Office of Emergency Services, Meeks Bay Fire Protection District, Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, and NTFPD Community Emergency Response Team are coordinating a West Shore Safety Assessment Operation.

Lake Tahoe Olympians to be honored at Gold Medal Gala
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/29/2016 - 5:44pmIts been 50 years since the first gold medal in skiing and snowboarding was won by an American. Since Gretchen Fraser’s historic slalom gold at St. Moritz in 1948, 31 athletes from the U.S. have brought home 35 gold medals.
In the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe each won gold, Bowman in women’s halfpipe skiing and Anderson in women’s slopestyle snowboarding.

Missing hiker and dog found alive near Donner
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/19/2016 - 4:57pmA man from Rocklin, Calif., and his dog have been found safe after missing in the Sierra near Donner Pass since Monday.
Cody Michael, 23, and his German Shepherd, Bauer, were spotted about 10 a.m. Thursday by a Black Hawk helicopter pilot in the Cherry Point area. Michael had gone out for an overnight hiking and camping trip on Sunday and didn't return on Monday as planned. A video sent from his phone Sunday showed him cooking a meal and drying out his shoes on rocks surrounded by snow.

Missing ski instructor Carson May found in five feet of snow
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/29/2016 - 6:07pmTwo search and rescue teams training in the snow at the Sugar Bowl Resort on Monday found the body of missing ski instructor Carson May.
The El Dorado County Search and Rescue dog teams, along with the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue team, located May under five feet of snow in an avalanche prone out-of-bounds area at the resort.
Carson May, 23, was a ski instructor at the resort and went missing Jan. 15, 2016. He was not found despite an intensive, four-day search by dozens of volunteers and law enforcement officers.
Still no sign of missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor; Not seen since Thursday
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/18/2016 - 8:32amThere is still no sign of 23-year-old Carson May, the Sugar Bowl ski instructor who went missing after taking an after-work run Thursday afternoon, despite efforts by 60 searchers at the resort on Sunday.
Searchers were back on this hill at 8:00 a.m. today.
LTCC Nordic Center offers scenic trails for all levels

Cross country and skate skiers can enjoy the breathtaking views and great exercise right in the heard of South Lake Tahoe.
The LTCC CONNECT Community Education program manages the center with a number of affordable passes for the entire season or for single day use.
American Century donates $55,500 to Lake Tahoe non-profits

Six people were injured in a weather related head-on crash Saturday morning on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper said. One woman remains in serious condition.
The accident was reported at 8:48 a.m. and involved a Toyota Camry, occupied by five people, three males and two females, and a Volvo, driven by a Carson City resident.
According to NHP Trooper Daniel Lopez, the Camry was going eastbound on Highway 50 and crossed over into the westbound lane, striking the Volvo head-on, said Lopez.

The Tahoe Fund is working with the California Tahoe Conservancy and Nevada State Lands to promote the sale of their Lake Tahoe license plates. Between now and April 5, 2015, receive two free alpine or nordic tickets to the resort of your choice when you purchase the special plates.
