Small fires in region after storm cell passes through

A very strong storm cell is moving across the east side of Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley this evening, causing some small fires.

The National Weather Service in Reno issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for western Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe. The warning is through at least 6:15 p.m. and extends through the Carson Range.

It is expected to impact the east side of Lake Tahoe and into Carson City and Carson Valley. Wind gusts to 60 mph, penny sized hail and heavy rain are possible with this storm, according to the weather service.

Tahoe WordWave 2015 lineup announced

Writers, readers and performers from all around the country will appear at South Lake Tahoe Oct. 9-11, 2015 for WordWave, a three-day festival held on the grounds of Valhalla at the Tallac Historic Site. This literary mash-up will feature oral storytelling, theater performances and free readings, panels on craft, yoga, and a novel writing camp for kids. Highlights include a one-act playwriting contest, a Maker’s Station demo with bookbinding, letterpress, drum making, and found poetry and art. Ticketed events include a steampunk ball, workshops, and even a hike.

Award-Winning Mystery Author at SLT Library

Author Cindy Sample will discuss her award-winning and national bestselling Laurel McKay humorous mystery series which is set in El Dorado County. Sample’s series has been described as the perfect blend of intrigue, humor and romance. She will discuss her pothole-filled path to publication and also focus on her latest release, Dying for a Dude, a 2015 LEFTY Award Finalist for Best Humorous Mystery.

Q & A and book sale to follow. This will be a fun night for writers and readers.

It is always a treat for me to see people in our community who display the American flag at their business and/or at home. Over the years this always reminds me of our Nation, our Constitution, and the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Thanks to all of your readers who do so. The 76-year old portion of Highway 50 over Echo Summit that is being considered for either replacement or rehabilitation is actually three spans of a bridge, much of which is cracking, spalling or rusting.

Tahoe In Depth, the environmental newspaper that the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency created two years ago to help improve awareness and understanding of lake issues, was recognized with a Silver Spike award at the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America annual awards ceremony on Thursday.
Silver Spike awards recognize the northern Sierra region’s best public relations and communications campaigns, according to Anne McMillin, President of the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

5th Annual Peaks & Paws to raise money for Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe

English professor releases new book of poems, “Of Dirt and Tar”

Readers will discover “deftly-crafted narrative moments that unreel like snippets of cinema” in the poems of June Sylvester Saraceno’s new book, entitled “Of Dirt and Tar.”

The second, full-length collection of poetry by Saraceno, the English department chair at Sierra Nevada College, will be released March 1 by Cherry Grove Collections, with accolades on its jacket by some of the nation’s top poets.

South Lake Tahoe in the Running For "America's Best Ski Destination"

Voters chose Lake Tahoe as "America's Best Lake" in 2012 and the local area is now up for another top honor as "America's Best Ski Destination."

The Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority is seeking votes from the local community through the month until the contest's end on December 30 at 8:50 pm PST. Online votes can be made daily on the voting site. North Lake Tahoe is also in the running along with Sun Valley, Idaho and other big resorts.

Lake Tahoe to make bid for 2015-17 Winter X Games

The 2015-2017 X Games could take place at Lake Tahoe. ESPN, which owns the X Games franchise, announced qualified entities representing cities and Lake Tahoe was listed among the eligible destinations. Finalists will be determined by April 2013 and host cities will be announced by the end of 2013, according to a news release.

North Lake Tahoe launches first-ever free ski shuttle

Getting to North Lake Tahoe’s snowy ski slopes just got a whole lot easier with the launch of the region's first area-wide free ski shuttle serving North Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Donner Summit.

The service runs between area lodging properties to 9 different ski resorts on weekends and holiday weeks now through March 31. It was formed through a collaboration of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association in partnership with the Truckee/North Tahoe Transportation Management Association and Placer County, the town of Truckee and several ski resorts.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency has partnered with federal, state and local agencies to launch "Tahoe in Depth" a new Lake Tahoe Basin environmental newspaper.

Mailed to every Lake Tahoe Basin property owner this week, the free publication is designed to keep Lake Tahoe homeowners, residents and visitors abreast of the wide variety of activities taking place to protect and restore the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Every other Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. beginning September 14, the Lake Tahoe Humane Society and SPCA is offering a dog-assisted reading practice at Bona Fide Books headquarters.
