Douglas County Sheriff's Office warns of telephone scam

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) has received two reports in the past 24 hours from citizens who were contacted by telephone from someone claiming to be a DCSO deputy or sergeant. The caller uses the name and rank of an actual DCSO employee. One of the citizens said her caller ID showed the call was coming from a DCSO business line.

According to their reports, the person claiming to be a DCSO employee tells the citizen they owe money for a fine or warrant and tells the citizen to transfer money the caller via an online app or they will be arrested.

IRS and Department of Justice phone scams circulating in area

There are currently some scams currently spreading through the area from phone calls from IRS and Department of Justice impostors.

The Office of Justice Programs’ Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) has received multiple reports that individuals claiming to represent the Department of Justice are calling members of the public as part of an impostor scam. The department strongly encourages the public to remain vigilant and not to provide personal information during these calls, which appear to target the elderly.

1:49 a.m. - Spousal Battery - South Lake Tahoe - 39-YEAR-OLD MALE ARRESTED.

Warning on unordered packets of seeds being sent to homes in El Dorado County and around the country

People around the country are receiving mysterious seed packets in the mail from China. While the shipping package may be mislabeled as jewelry or other merchandise, the contents are instead unlabeled seeds.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has become aware of a number of reports regarding these seeds.

Some have been mailed to homes in El Dorado County.

El Dorado County Department of Agriculture officials are instructing residents not to open, plant, or dispose of any unsolicited seed packets received, but to contact their office.

FBI warns of possible cyber crimes during coronavirus pandemic

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The FBI anticipates cyber actors will exploit increased use of virtual environments by government agencies, the private sector, private organizations, and individuals as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Computer systems and virtual environments provide essential communication services for telework and education, in addition to conducting regular business. The criminal, or cyber actor, will exploit vulnerabilities in these systems to steal sensitive information, target individuals and businesses performing financial transactions, and engage in extortion.

Illegal tow practices being investigated by South Lake Tahoe police

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and the El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson are investigating possible illegal and improper predatory towing practices.

SLTPD has received several informal complaints from the public about the possible illegal tow practices that involve cars removed from private parking areas near the Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe.

The complains involve a tow company improperly holding stored vehicles longer than necessary, thus adding extra storage fees to the vehicle's owner.

Six indicted for falsely claiming benefits for properties destroyed in Paradise Camp Fire

On Thursday, Dec. 12, a federal jury returned indictments against six defendants who made false claims for benefits in connection with the 2018 Camp Fire and received funds from FEMA to compensate for their losses, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced.

Pair sought in connection with quick change scam at Lake Tahoe

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Two suspects are being sought in connection with a "quick change" scam at the Roundhill Safeway this summer.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is working on the cold case and are asking for the public's assistance in identifying the male and female pictured above.

They were at Safeway during mid-summer. The store is located at 212 Elks Point Road.

Kidnapping phone scam in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE. Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is warning the public of a current phone scam being received in the city.

The scammers claim they have kidnapped a loved one and use that person's name. SLTPD received several calls from the public Thursday. The scammers use the name if a loved one, a close relative or child's. They demand money.

The call is an international one, coming from India.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev.- The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public, especially our senior population to be aware of a recent telephone scam being reported to the Sheriff’s Office. This advisement was issued in July of this year, however the Sheriff’s office is receiving reports the calls continue. Unidentified callers are telling the person answering the phone they have a warrant issued from the Sheriff’s Office or another Federal Law Enforcement Agency. The scammer is seeking large sums of money, generally $2000 to $5000 be sent via the mail in the form of pre-paid gift cards.

Scam requesting gift cards circulating South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The scam is old, but if you want to help those in need it may pull at your heart strings....for a moment.

I got a text today from someone claiming to be Father Mauricio Hurtado of St. Theresa Catholic Church. While I am not a member of the church I am co-chair of their Bread & Broth 4 Kids program and it isn't that abnormal for him to contact me, though it is normally through email.

So at 8:25 a.m. Friday when the text says, "Hi Paula, I need a favor from you, text me back as soon as you get my message - Fr. Mauricio Hurtado," I hit reply right away.

Spring aging and caregiver series in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Family Caregiver program is offering a six-week series of classes designed to provide instruction and support to caregivers who are or are planning to care for a family member or friend age 60 or older.

It started on April 15 but participants can still join and attend any or all of the remaining sessions. This series is offered twice a year.

Scammers attempt to get money from South Lake Tahoe business owner

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A scammer attempted to get money out of a South Lake Tahoe business owner on Thursday, December 20 by pretending to be from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

The call came into the business from what looked like the police department's main phone line. The person on the other end told the owner he owed money on old credit cards and would be arrested if he didn’t pay up. The caller gave him a number to call, 512-333-2304, and when he called they asked for $1985.

He hung up and called police.

Community gives families displaced from South Lake Tahoe apartments some holiday cheer but still in need of permanent housing

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On December 12 six South Lake Tahoe families learned the apartment building they called home was no longer habitable and they had to vacate by December 17.

As the deadline loomed panic set in for the residents of 3546 Spruce Avenue, they tried to find new housing in a city where available rentals are almost non-existent, especially for those of a lower income level without financial means to pay higher rent and deposits.

Douglas County senior scammed out of $34,000 over 20-month period

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) recently made connections with a senior citizen through their new Caring Neighbors Program. They found the senior had been scammed out of over $34,000 over the past 20 months.

In the program, a deputy and a volunteer visit seniors to obtain needed information such as consent, next of kin and medication information. The information is beneficial in case of a future emergency involving the senior citizen.

I felt it was important to make as many people aware of scam and psychological horror that was perpetrated on my wife just a few days ago.

Liberty Utilities warns of resurgence of scam phone calls

Customers of Liberty Utilities on both the north and south shores of Lake Tahoe have been targeted again by scammers demanding cash payments to avoid shut off of their power over the weekend.

Liberty Utilities' customer service reps are getting calls from customers to advise them of the demands.

The scammers appear to be legit at first, reciting the customer's account numbers to them.

At this time Liberty Utilities does not know how they obtained the account information. They have contacted the appropriate law enforcement agencies to let them know about the situation.

LTUSD warns South Lake Tahoe residents of tutoring scam

Officials from the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) are warning residents that an individual or company is making phone calls and/or going to homes in our area and offering tutoring services.

The fake tutors are telling families that their child's school sent them. In return for the services they are asking for credit card numbers or cash.

According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, a woman by the name of Marycarmen Estrada has contacted at least one local family to provide tutoring services.

Jury Duty and fine scams continue to prey on senior citizens and other area locals

Douglas County residents continue to receive scam phone calls about missed court dates and jury duties, resulting in two residents being scammed out of over $5,,000 each, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO).

Scam Alert: Man posing as STPUD employee to gain access to home

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - A man posing as a South Tahoe Public Utility (STPUD) employee tried to gain access to a home off North Upper Truckee over the weekend.

“Over the weekend a customer received a knock at the door and the man asked to be let into the house to shut-off the water because the customer did not pay their bill on time,” said General Manager, Richard Solbrig. “Luckily, our customer did not let the District impersonator in as he was not wearing a District uniform nor driving a District truck.”

Grandma and grandpa scams on the rise

More than a dozen reports from the public about a phone scam prompted the Washoe County Sheriff's Office to issue an alert.

The callers claim to be a person's grandchild and they are in need of financial assistance because they're in jail, or have been involved in an accident. It is not unusual for scammers to use personal information about a potential victim’s family members in order to sound credible. This type of information is often easily obtained via the Internet or social media.

IRS scam targeting South Lake Tahoe residents

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has received multiple reports regarding a phone scam to local residents. Callers are identifying themselves to potential victims as an employee of the IRS (Internal Revenue Service). These phony IRS Agents inform the victim they have a warrant for their arrest or owe taxes. This is a scam. Callers claiming to be from the IRS tell intended victims they must pay using a pre-paid debit card, credit cards or wire transfer. The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver’s license.

Vacation rental scams through Craigslist continue in South Lake Tahoe

Unknowingly, visitors to South Lake Tahoe are renting legitimate vacation homes through illegitimate parties, leaving them without money or a place to stay when they arrive.

South Tahoe Now has been warning people for years about renting both short-term and long-term homes through Craigslist, the online classified ad forum.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is warning potential vacation home renters that scams continue on Craigslist.

Scam targeting users of CalWORKS and CalFresh

The is a current scam in California that targets people enrolled in public assistance programs in the state. Though there are no known victims in El Dorado County, the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) would like to let all users of electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards to be on the lookout for potential scammers using text messaging.

Scam targeting businesses with fake NDOT computer purchases

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is warning of a potential scam in which scammers attempt to purchase computer equipment under NDOT’s name.

Using a fake @nevadaddot.com e-mail address, scammers have attempted to purchase computer equipment without an official state purchase request or vendor solicitation. The scammers then attempt to get the equipment delivered to an out-of-state location.

Douglas County Sheriff offers law enforcement classes for seniors

The next Douglas County Sheriff's Senior Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy will be held September 11-15, 2017.

Registration is now being accepted for those interested in attending the academy and learning about law enforcement. Students must be at least 50 years of age and residents of Douglas County.

Phone scam hitting Liberty Utilities customers; Crooks take at least $2,500 from victims

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three Liberty Utilities customers have fallen victim to aggressive phone scams over the last two days taking at least $2,500 from the victims.

In each case the crooks pose as a Liberty Utilities collections representative who threatens to shut off their power if payment was not made within a specified period of time. Sometimes the caller has specific customer information such as last payment amount; Liberty is unaware of how this information has been obtained.

Carson City mom accused of faking son's death for money

Investigators continue to unravel the bizarre circumstances surrounding a Carson City woman who was arrested Friday after she allegedly faked her 10-year-old son's death in order to generate money through community donations and a GoFundMe account, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

On Friday, April 14, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office was contacted to investigate the possibility of a fraudulent claim of a child’s recent death and concerns that the child could be alive and endangered at a South Carson Street motel.
