New laws taking effect in California January 1, 2021

Through the pandemic, legislative sessions in Sacramento were canceled just as they were across the country, not giving the time needed to add new legislation. As a result, in 2020 Governor Gavin Newsom signed the lowest number of laws since 1967, just 372. In comparison, in 2019 there were 870 new laws, 1016 in 2018 and 859 in 2017.

Many of the new laws are centered around COVID-19, addressing systemic racism, employee rights and policing. For a full list, select 2020 here.

Douglas County reaches out to Lake Tahoe servers with “Call for a Ride. Stay Alive” Campaign

STATELINE, Nev. - Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) took the first step in rolling out their campaign aimed at keeping drunk drivers off the roads by providing server intervention training to employees at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Lucky Beaver, Dotty’s, and Lake Tahoe AleWorX.

South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County not under shut down orders, yet

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With a surge of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, California Governor Newsom today issued a new regional stay-at-home order as an "emergency brake" to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

This order goes into effect in regions with less than 15 percent ICU availability. At this time, the El Dorado County does not fall into that group but it could be a matter of days until it does. The county is part of the Greater Sacramento Region which is at 22 percent capacity as of Thursday.

Retired SLTPD K9 Tara dies after being honored with ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a special ceremony November 6, 2020, one that honored the police service of K9 Tara as she left her home for the last time. After surviving cancer surgery that resulted in the loss of one leg two years ago, K9 Tara was put to sleep after being hit by the disease once again.

One man dies in Lake Tahoe boating accident

UPDATE 8/11/20: A 28-year-old man from Napa, California has been identified as the person who died in a tragic boat incident off shore from South Lake Tahoe on Monday. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) Marine unit responded along with South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Coast Guard.

When the call came in around 3:40 p.m., two men were in the water and a third was inside a rental boat. One of the men, David Castorena, had a major injury to his leg and he as not wearing a personal floatation device, or PFD.

6:50 p.m. Update: Douglas County Library Director Amy Dodson and Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley met Tuesday to discuss the library's proposed Statement of Diversity, a topic that became very controversial after a letter from Coverley to the library was circulated.

South Lake Tahoe man dies at Lake Baron while walking dogs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 39-year-old South Lake Tahoe man drowned in Lake Baron in Meyers on Thanksgiving Day.

David Schmidt was walking his dogs Cheena and Oreo along with a friend's dog at Tahoe Paradise Park. According to close friends, it appears one of the dogs fell through the ice and David went to save him. David left his keys, wallet, phone and jacket on the shore and went onto the ice when he broke through. Friends said he would be too smart to just walk onto thin ice without a good reason.

Florida man arrested in Meyers on charges stemming from alleged stalking and criminal threats

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - An Ormond Beach, Florida man is sitting in the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe on charges of stalking, carrying a concealed weapon and vandalism.

On June 24, detectives from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) began an around-the-clock investigation of an interstate stalking and criminal threats case. The case involved credible and serious threats against the victim’s life according to EDSO.

Similarities between Douglas County and Washoe County homicides

RENO, Nev. - Keeping the community safe is the number one priority of law enforcement working on four recent murders in Reno and Douglas County. This was the message from Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam during a press conference late Thursday afternoon.

Two elderly people, a man and a woman, were killed in a home in southwest Reno. Their bodies were discovered on January 16 after concerned neighbors called law enforcement after not seeing the residents. Their names and ages have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Locals headed to Hollywood for statewide movie industry award ceremonies

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County and the South Shore are a big part of the Hollywood scene with movies, television shows and commercials filmed often in the area. It takes a lot of partners to make location shoots successful and to recognize those that go above and beyond to make filming successful the California On Location Awards (COLA) are given out.

The COLA nominations were announced this week by the Film Liaisons in California Statewide (FLICS) and one will find nominees from the county and South Lake Tahoe.

Missing Carson City boy found in Reno

UPDATE 3:52 p.m.: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong told News 4 the 11-year-old boy walked more than 12 miles on Wednesday afternoon after getting in an argument with family members. Brendan Hubbs-Whitney was found near the Chocolate Nugget candy factory in Washoe Valley by a woman who was on her way to Reno early Thursday morning

SAR volunteers aid in search of Bay Area man missing in Yosemite

A weekend hike in Yosemite turned into a six-day long ordeal for a Bay Area man this week.

Oakland resident Alan Chow, 36, had his backpacking gear and wilderness permit when he set out on a solo hike Saturday, February 17 on the loop trail in Yosemite's northern wilderness area above Hetch Hetchy, about a mile from O'Shaughnessy Dam.

He became disoriented and lost his way.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue holds annual awards ceremony

An overflowing crowd of family, friends and community members filled the City Council chambers Monday as South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue held their 5th annual awards ceremony.

The staff was honored for their service doing a job that protects the lives, homes and environment of the South Lake Tahoe community and its visitors.

"Your recognition is well deserved, and well earned," said Mayor Wendy David.

Unique items uncovered by Washoe County Sheriffs, owners sought

As part of an ongoing investigation, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office ATAC detectives recently located some unique items they believe to be stolen, and are now attempting to locate potential victims.

Among the items recently recovered are two boxed bounce houses and two bounce house fans. Detectives also located a large, radio-controlled model helicopter, jewelry, and sporting equipment.

Washoe County Sheriffs asking for help in locating two teens

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for any information that will assist with locating two teenagers missing from Sun Valley since last Thursday.

Jakob Palmer, age 14, and his sister Alexis Palmer, age 12, were last seen in the area of Sun Valley Boulevard and Leon Drive at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2017. They may have been heading for the Stead area.

Sheriff’s Office detectives believe the siblings may not be in immediate danger but are asking for any information that will help return them home.

Two new deputies for Douglas County Sheriff's Office

Two new deputy sheriffs, Dustin Tremaine and Zack Hickman, were recently administered the oath of office during ceremonies held by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Both new deputies were raised in the Carson Valley, graduated from Douglas High School in 2006 and earned associate degrees from Western Nevada College (WNC).

Dustin Tremaine was awarded an Associate’s Degree in Marketing from WNC. He has been employed as a firefighter by the Nevada Division of Forestry since 2015. He also works as a seasonal firefighter and on ski patrol at Heavenly Valley Ski Resort.

Nevada lawmakers are trying to address everything from marijuana users' gun rights to the danger that edible marijuana products pose to children.

On Monday, a wide array of marijuana-focused bills were introduced to both members of the Nevada Senate and the Assembly to help regulate the drug that's now legal for recreational use in Nevada (and has been legal for medicinal use since 2000).

Lost snowboarder at Alpine Meadows found safe

7;45 p.m. update: The snowboarder was found alive and well. He had hiked about three miles in the snow to an area known as Diamond Crossing. The Placer County Sheriff's Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team are currently hiking with him out of the back country.

A 32-year-old snowboarder is missing on the back side of Alpine Meadows Ski Resort after he became separated from a friend.

Twelve searchers from the Placer County Sheriff's Tahoe Nordic search and rescue teams are working on a full search.

Structure fire causes major damage to lodge structure at Lake Tahoe's Homewood Mountain Resort

5:00 p.m. update 12/28/16: Homewood Resort at Lake Tahoe will be opening their lifts on Thursday, just one day after a fire destroyed their South Lodge.

"We are expecting to have 'top-to-bottom' skiing and boarding available to our guests," says a message on the Homewood website. "Our team would like to thank the North Tahoe Fire Protection District, Placer County Sheriffs, our community partners and most importantly our amazing employees that are working to get our operations up and running for tomorrow."

Three rescued by Coast Guard on south end of Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE - Three people were rescued after a distress call led the Coast Guard to the 25-foot vessel, JUST ENOUGH, as it was taking on water near the California/Nevada border of the South Shore of Lake Tahoe Tuesday afternoon.

The initial call came in at 3:00 p.m. and crews from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County Sheriffs Department responded to the scene.

Fire in Douglas County burning in Pine Nut Mountains

8:30 p.m. update: East Fork Fire Protection responded to a wildland fire at around noon today. The fire was in the Pine Nut Range near the Ruby Mine area. The fire was a slow growth fire and has been mostly contained. The majority of the fire appears to be on private property.

Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service and Nevada Department of Forestry all assisted with suppression efforts. The efforts are winding down, resources are being released from the fire and the crews are in the mop up stage.

Douglas County Sheriffs looking for suspect in Stateline car burglary

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's assistance in identifying a person of interest in a vehicle burglary in a parking lot at Harvey's Casino.

Between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. on March 24 a locked vehicle was burglarized. The suspect took numerous credit cards and personal items. Video surveillance captured an alleged suspect exiting a lcoal business where he attempted to use one of the stolen credit cards.

Dynamite used to destroy massive boulders that fell onto Hwy 4

Two massive boulders that fell onto State Route 4 at Ebbetts Pass in Alpine County have been removed by dynamite.

On March 26, crews from Caltrans District 10 responded to a report of boulders in the roadway, and there they found two boulders on the roadway, which has been closed for the winter season. One was estimated to be 300 tons and measured 16’ tall x 25’ wide x 18’ thick while the other was about 100 tons and 14’ tall x 20’ wide x 10’ thick.

Caltrans crews used approximately 30 pounds of explosive material to detonate the boulders which created about 700 yards of rock.

Douglas County man jailed for domestic battery and firing gun inside home

A 57-year-old Douglas County man was arrested early Wednesday on suspicion of domestic battery and shooting multiple rounds from a firearm inside his home.

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriffs Office responded to a call of domestic dispute with shots fired at the 3400 block of Tourmaline, south of Carson City at 4:00 a.m. on April 6. When they arrived they heard additional gun fire coming from the residence.

Soon after, Daniel Vanhooser came out of the home and was taken into custody without incident.

2:49 a.m.- Liquor Laws in 3300 block of Lake Tahoe Blvd - Officer saw two minors with bikes parked, sitting drinking beers. They said a man went into the Safeway Gas Station and bought it for them. Man providing beer was found, arrested for providing alcohol to a minor, and kids arrested for minors with alcohol.
12:07 p.m. - Battery in 1000 lock of Heavenly Village Way

El Dorado County teen latest victim of counterfeit hydrocodone

An 18-year-old El Dorado Hills resident is the latest victim of a rash of overdoses from pills made to look like the prescription painkiller, Norco.

In Sacramento County, six deaths are attributed to the pills, and the death of county resident George Berry is now the seventh suspected victim. The pills ingested are actually Fentanyl, which is 80 times as potent as morphine and hundreds of times more potent than heroin.

"Frosty-5-0" team formed in Douglas County for Polar Bear Plunge

The Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday, March 19 just got safer with the addition of a team made up of Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies and Explorer Scouts. Dubbed Frosty 5-0, the group will be swimming in the annual event for Northern Nevada Special Olympics at Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe starting at 9:00 a.m.

Four arrested after high speed chase through Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe crime

2:45 p.m. 2/28/16 update:

Two different high speed chases through the Carson Valley and up Kingsbury Grade resulted in the arrest of two men and two women on Saturday, February 27, 2017.

At 3:10 p.m., a trooper from the Nevada Highway Patrol spotted a silver Mercedes-Benz with California plates going down U.S. 50 (Spooner Summit) at 85 mph. The driver failed to pull over for the trooper, instead turning South on Highway 395 towards Minden, Nev., at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Two people die as plane crashes in South Lake Tahoe after takeoff

8:00 a.m. update 10/12/15: Authorities spent Sunday removing parts of the plane that remained in trees surrounding the crash site that claimed the lives of two people in South Lake Tahoe.

Investigators say the plane hit trees before crashing behind a home on Tionontati Street just before 5:36 p.m. Saturday, October 10. A fire started which scorched the home.

The force of the crash broke a large tree just feet away from the house.

5:17 a.m. - Vacation Rental Noise Violation - Cold Creek Ct - REPORT DOCUMENTS THE RESPONSE TO A VHR REGARDING A NOISE COMPLAINT.

Scammers targeting El Dorado County residents

During the past two weeks, several El Dorado County residents have been the target of scam artists attempting to obtain money from them. The scammers are not from the area and use internet based phones which allow them to select a local area code. They have been identifying themselves as local law enforcement and tell the call takers that they have missed jury duty and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The scammers tell the victims if they don’t pay, they will be arrested for the warrant. In most cases the caller has told the victim the amount of the warrant was $5,500.00.

Area Search and Rescue volunteers help in Shasta County

Almost 40 Search and Rescue volunteers from El Dorado County Office of Emergency Services (OES) went to Shasta County over the weekend to help search vast terrain for an abducted 6-month-old baby.

The team of 20 volunteers were in Redding, CA, just hours after their services were requested on Friday, July 10 and spent the weekend searching through chest high starthistle and stickers, with no sign of the missing baby. Another group of 18 El Dorado County Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers headed up on Sunday.

Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe linked to Vallejo kidnapping

A disbarred attorney arrested in South Lake Tahoe has been accused of kidnapping 29-year old Denise Huskins of Vallejo, CA on March 23, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed today.

Dozens of Skyland residents evacuated during fire drill

Every year, South Lake Tahoe fire agencies prepare to fight fires around the basin but they rarely get to practice evacuations of residents.

That opportunity came on Monday when the Tahoe Douglas Fire District and Skyland Fire Adapted Community executed an inter-agency wildfire evacuation drill in the Skyland neighborhood.

The drill simulated a real evacuation event to give residents the opportunity to practice evacuating from their homes and getting to the designated safe zone.

Gang sweep in El Dorado County

Four people were arrested earlier this week in El Dorado County when the El Dorado Gang Enforcement Detail (EDGE) contacted several gang members at their homes.

El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, El Dorado County Probation, El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department participated in the sweep on May 18.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office looking for Ulta burglary suspects

On March 5, a theft occurred at the Ulta store in Carson City and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in identifying the suspects.

At 5:14 p.m., a male and female entered the store located at 911 Topsy Lane. They began looking at perfume, and while the female began a conversation with the employees at the front counter the male exited he store with several fragrance packs. The female suspect exited the store shortly after.

Both suspects were seen leaving the parking lot in a red 4-door sedan.

Three arrested in stabbing death of El Dorado County man

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office arrested three suspects for the murder of 55-year-old Pete Thomas.

On the evening of February 3, police found Thomas's body inside of a home in the 3200 block of Sand Ridge Road in unincorporated Placerville. Detectives and crime scene investigators examined the scene and circumstances of Thomas’ death and determined it was a homicide, said El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Lt. Tom Murdoch.

So. Lake Tahoe woman drives car through building after argument

A domestic argument in South Lake Tahoe Monday night lead to a woman getting into her car, driving over large boulders, through a building and coming to rest against a tree.

South Lake Tahoe Police, Fire, Paramedics and El Dorado County Sheriffs responded to a 911 call reporting that a car went through the local Jack in the Box. When responders arrived they found a car partially inside a building on the corner of Sussex and Brockway Avenues, across the street from the restaurant.
