LCAP 101: What is it and how you can participate?

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District will be holding a public hearing Tuesday on how to spend an estimated $2,159,294 in LCAP funding. They want parents to participate in the decision making and have invited everyone to the June 9 School Board meeting to encourage participation.

Most South Lake Tahoe schools awarded for increased attendance

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) rewarded five of the seven South Lake Tahoe schools who met the district's goal of an increased attendance of one percent this year.

South Lake Tahoe kindergarten and transitional kindergarten sign-ups

Sign-ups for both kindergarten and transitional kindergarten in Lake Tahoe Unified Schools will be held May 4 - May 8.

To be eligible for enrollment a child must be five years of age on or before September 1, 2015. If your child will turn five years of age between September 2 and December 2, 2015, they qualify for transitional kindergarten which is a two year Kindergarten program located at Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District has new board member

When Sue Novasel won November's El Dorado County Supervisorial race it left a vacant seat on the Lake Tahoe Untiifed School Board (LTUSD). A Notice of Vacancy was filed, encouraging locals to apply to fill the trustee position for the remaining 22 months of Novasel's term. At Tuesday's LTUSD School Board meeting, the opening was filled.

LTUSD may be exclude unvaccinated students from school

With over 200 students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District not immunized against the measles, district officials are monitoring the situation and may even exclude those children from attending classes.

Even though there are no cases in El Dorado County as of yet, the cases in Washoe County and Bay Area are of concern.

Tahoe Arts Project features a poet and storyteller in local schools / LTCC stage

Flu bug starting to hit South Lake Tahoe

Runny and stuffy nose, fever and chills, body and headaches, cough and sore throat, tiredness. Have these symptoms? You might have the flu.

You don't have to go far in South Lake Tahoe before you come across someone who is sick, and the flu season is just beginning. Evidence points to high or widespread flu activity in 43 states including Nevada, and it's just now entering California.

Awards given to Festival of the Tree entries

If you haven't made it to the annual Festival of the Trees yet, you have through Sunday to take in all of the holiday fun. Trees and wreaths line the convention center at Harrahs and people can try and win everyone on display with a high bid.

Grow Domes taking shape at Sierra House Elementary

The Grow Domes at Sierra House Elementary in South Lake Tahoe have blossomed over the past few weeks. Progress has been swift on the two domes and learning center that will allow students to grow their own organic vegetables for school lunches. Students will also use the domes to study soils, verimculture and aquaponics as well as using the process to study math, science and language arts.

Vail Resorts honors 49 local non-profits during EpicPromise grant giveaway

As part of their mission to give back to the community and protect the environment, Vail Resorts gave away 49 grants to Lake Tahoe area groups during a ceremony on Tuesday at Heavenly Valley.

If you have an absentee ballot and have not mailed it in, there is still a way to make sure your vote is counted! You can turn in your ballot at any precinct location on Tuesday. All precincts are open from 7 am to 8 pm. You can also hand deliver your ballot to the El Dorado County Elections Department, 2850 Fairlane Ct., Placerville or the El Dorado County Recorder-Clerk's Office, 3368 Lake Tahoe Blvd., Suite 108, South Lake Tahoe. Ballots must be received by the Elections Department no later than 8 pm on Tuesday.

Two Grow Domes going in at Sierra House Elementary; $117,000 raised so far

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) approved two grow domes to be installed at Sierra House Elementary School. Ground is being broken on the project area this weekend and the project is expected to be completed by the end of November.

Pop-Up Dinner to raise funds for grow dome at Sierra House Mountain Academy

The kick off event for this weekend's Sample the Sierra will be a fundraiser for the Geodome/Grow Dome at Sierra House Mountain Academy.

Pop-Up Dinner will be held at the Lake Tahoe Community College from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The menu is curated and cooked by Chef Stephen Moise, the Executive Chef of The Ridge Tahoe and former Corporate Chef for Tommy Hilfiger. The meal will highlight local ingredients, including produce from the University of Nevada-Reno, ribs from the Carson Valley and crayfish from Tahoe Lobster Company.

BBQ to raise funds for Sierra House Elementary's Grow Dome

The Annual Turn 3 on the Green Golf Tournament and BBQ raises funds each each for different groups and projects in need. This year, the Sierra House Elementary (soon to be known as Sierra House Mountain Academy) is the beneficiary for their Grow Dome project.

The public is invited to the afternoon BBQ which will be held at the American Legion starting at 4 p.m. on August 20. This will follow a golf tournament at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course that has a shotgun start at 12:45 p.m.

All funds raised go to the Grow Dome project.

Kindergarten, middle school and high school registration for South Lake Tahoe schools in August

Registration for kindergarten at South Lake Tahoe schools will be held on August 4th. South Tahoe Middle School registration for new students will be held on August 12 and for new students at South Tahoe High August 11-14.

The first day of school is August 25th.

South Lake Tahoe Kindergarten Registration Held May 5 - May 9

Registration for South Lake Tahoe kindergarten and transitional kindergarten will be held May 5th through May 9th.

Children must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2014. Children who turn 5 between September 2 and December 2, 2014 are eligible for transitional kindergarten.

Local Elementary School May Be Rebranded as Sierra House Mountain Academy

The idea of Sierra House Elementary School becoming the Sierra House Mountain Academy was presented to the Lake Tahoe Unified School Board this week. If this becomes reality, Sierra House would join the other themed South Lake Tahoe elementary schools: Meyers is the Environmental Magnet School and Tahoe Valley is the Performing Arts Magnet School.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District Enrollment Up

For the first time since 1996, enrollment in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District appears to be on an upward trend. There are 102 new students in the district so far this school year, bringing the total number of students currently enrolled to 3,832.

This figure is still far below the number of students attending local school in the 1996-1997 school year when there were 5,978 in grades K to 12.

American Century delivers $64,500 to Lake Tahoe South nonprofit organizations

The 2012 American Century Championship continues to benefit Tahoe South as the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed $64,500 to 23 non-profit groups through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.

Snow safety outreach program focuses South Lake Tahoe youth

The City of South Lake Tahoe’s Public Works Snow Removal Operation visited Sierra House Elementary Schools kindergarten and first grade classes to promote snow safety today. Street Supervisor Azril Kalik shared important safety reminders to Ms. Wilson and Ms. Tabor’s first graders.

“When you see the snow removal machines in your neighborhood, it’s important to go inside and play to remain safe. Remember to keep toys, sleds, shovels and your pets out of the road so they do not get damaged,” said Kalik.

Ready for the wild: Tahoe bear cubs rehabilitated and set free

Three bear cubs, nursed back to health by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, Inc., were released into the wild this week.
The bears, each close to a year old, were brought to the South Lake Tahoe facility last summer where they were found malnourished and without mothers.
The California Department of Fish and Game released one of the cubs, a female, north of Truckee on Tuesday and two were taken to Alpine County on Wednesday. The cubs were put into winter dens made by Fish and Game biologists.
