SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With electrical transmission lines found to be at fault in recent California fires, agencies responsible for supplying electricity to communities have been creating plans to prevent fires in the future.

Both companies that supply power to Lake Tahoe, NV Energy and Liberty Utilities, have announced new mitigation efforts to reduce the risk of fire.

STATELINE, Nev. - Many are accustomed to K9 officers in law enforcement departments across the world, but how many knew casinos utilized them in their security teams?

The UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe are having their 6th annual Plant Sale on Saturday, June 22, 2019 from 12 noon to 2 PM. (Or until all plants are sold, so arrive early!) This year’s sale will be held in the Cowork Tahoe parking lot. (Formerly Tahoe Mountain Lab) at 3079 Harrison Avenue, SLT. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you are waiting for more seasonal temperatures you'll have to wait until next week's forecast. There is a glimmer of what will look like on Monday when the sun should shine before the next storm. A Winter Weather Advisory returns to the Lake Tahoe Basin, this one starts May 20 at 8:00 p.m. until May 21 at 10:00 a.m.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Lake Tahoe natural resource and law enforcement agencies remind residents and visitors to practice proper food storage and trash disposal at all times while in bear country. Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears can result in unwanted bear behaviors, increased human-bear conflicts, and public safety issues, as well as fines and possible jail time for violators. Each year law enforcement and state wildlife officers respond to hundreds of calls in which bears may pose a public safety threat or are damaging property. In some cases, the bear must be euthanized.

While it felt like spring had finally arrived, we all know Mother Nature can be fickle, especially at Lake Tahoe. For those who love to play in the snow, it was a fantastic winter, and a banner year for the Sierra snowpack. Despite some cooler weather now, steady warmer temperatures are on the way and our attention is shifting from the mountains to the lake.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hope you didn't put away your winter coats yet! A weather pattern more typical of early March rather than mid-May came into the Lake Tahoe basin overnight, leaving behind a dusting of snow at lake level. This unusual and persistent weather pattern will continue to send cold Pacific storms into California and Nevada through next week. Expect periods of rain, mountain snow, and strong gusty winds.

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) members from all over California came together on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course to celebrate the new DAR Chapter in South Lake Tahoe.

The chapter was officially organized by the National Society on February 5 of this year, and was welcomed to the city with a proclamation at the South Lake Tahoe City Council's April 16 meeting, Sunday's event was the formal recognition of the chapter's status as the newest in California. City Council member Tamara Wallace attended the event and read the proclamation to the attendees.

High Sierra Softball kicked off Opening Day 2019 this weekend at South Tahoe High’s Field Of Dreams. With registration up 30 percent from last year, the High Sierra Board would like to thank and share the generosity of a local business and service club who are helping the athletes in our league participate to their fullest.

Blue Zone Sports donated 12 softball gloves to the league.

"Many of our kids don’t have any equipment or are using their grandpa's old baseball glove," said Board President, Chris Chandler. "This donation is very thoughtful and essential for our players."

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) is hosting "Dream It Be It" on Saturday, May 4 and there are still some spots available for local girls.

Dream It, Be It gives girls the tools they need to achieve their education and career goals through a day of inspirational speakers and activities. The program gives girls access to professional role models as they learn how to set and achieve goals.

PHILLIPS STATION, Calif. - In a final reading of the Sierra snowpack at Phillips Station west of Lake Tahoe, officials from the Department of Water Resources (DWR) found it to be 188 percent of average with 47 inches of snow depth and a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 27.5 inches.

Statewide, California’s snowpack sits at 31 inches of SWE, which is 144 percent of average for this time of year. Snow water equivalent is the depth of water that theoretically would result if the entire snowpack melted instantaneously.
