"Winter Weather Advisory" for Lake Tahoe - Up to 8 inches of snow at upper elevations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The calendar says Memorial Day Weekend. A time for outside barbeques and picnics, cycling and enjoying the pending arrival of summer. Normally.
This year it is a time for skiing, finding indoor activities and possibly chaining up the car.
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for theLake Tahoe basin from 5:00 a.m. Sunday to 5:00 a.m. Monday. Snow is expected with total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches of snow above 7500 feet. 1 to 3 inches of snow is possible between 6500 to 7500 feet. Locally higher amounts possible in Alpine and Northern Mono County with a trace expected at lake level.
Plan on slippery road conditions with chain controls possible along higher Sierra passes. Unusually wet and cold weather could pose a risk to backcountry travelers.
The weekend forecast from NWS in Reno:
Saturday - A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 56. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.
Tonight - A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, then a chance of showers after 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. South wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
Sunday - Rain showers likely before 11am, then rain and snow showers. Some thunder is also possible. High near 44. South wind around 5 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
Sunday Night - Rain and snow showers likely, mainly before 11pm. Some thunder is also possible. Cloudy, with a low around 32. West wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
Memorial Day -A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 51. West wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Monday NightA slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8pm, then a slight chance of showers between 8pm and 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
