Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets project closer to summer 2018 construction

Funded by grants, the .6 mile stretch of Sierra Boulevard starting at Highway 50 will have Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size, lighted sidewalks, underground utilities, landscaping, crosswalks and water quality improvements.

The powerful images of climate change, the catastrophic scenes of ice shelves collapsing and the rare fresh water lake system they leave behind will be the focus of the next U.C. Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) presentation on November 9 in Incline Village.
Epishelf lakes, the rare lake system where freshwater overlies seawater, have been researched by Assistant Professor Dr. Alex Forrest and his team in the remote Canadian Arctic.
Highway 50 roadwork in South Lake Tahoe extended through November
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/31/2017 - 7:24amConstruction on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe will be extended through the end of November, weather permitting. The work remaining includes the installation of new traffic signals at Tahoe Keys Boulevard and 3rd Street.
Expect lane closures and extra traffic on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe from the "Y" to Winnemucca Avenue during these final stages.
The project is a three-year one and includes water quality improvements, a new stop light at Lodi, timed traffic lights from the Y to Trout creek, bike lanes, bus pull outs, sidewalks and retaining walls.

Wendy is survived by her husband Dick; sons Mark and Scott; guardian son Mike Cokeron; grandsons Michael and Ryan Shehadi; brother Dr. Richard Rupp; sister in law Louise Rupp; brother in law Michael Shehadi; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A favored site for the women’s race, South Lake Tahoe will once again host the men for the Stage 6 finish and welcome back the women for the fourth year in a row on May 18. 2018.
AEG, the world’s leading sports and live entertainment company, made the announcement Thursday.
Small trembler in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/26/2017 - 12:38amIt wasn't a big one, but big enough to move the Richter scale at the University of Nevada Seismological Lab in Reno. At 1:10 a.m. there was a 1.2 magnitude earthquake Thursday morning 3.7 miles WSW of South Lake Tahoe, 10 miles southwest of Glenbrook.
It was the tenth small earthquake in just over 24 hours in the Sierra, most near Mammoth Lakes, Hawthorne and Bishop.

The freshly branded “California Express” gondola is targeted to open ahead of the 2019-20 winter season. The connection of these two mountains will realize the long-held dream of the pioneers who brought the sport of skiing and the 1960 Winter Olympics to Squaw Valley nearly 60 years ago.

Stretch of highway renamed for fallen South Lake Tahoe firefighter
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/14/2017 - 5:31pmThe Michael “Mikey” Hallenbeck Memorial Highway was dedicated Saturday during a ceremony on Echo Summit near South Lake Tahoe.
The stretch of Highway 50 from Mt. Ralston Road to Echo Summit now has signage at each end commemorating the fallen fire fighter who worked winters at Sierra-at-Tahoe.
Can a mega fire happen in Lake Tahoe?

1. Starts near or in a high fire danger area during approaching or actual red flag conditions,
2. Escapes the initial attack,
3. Develops into a campaign fire covering a large area,
4. Requires thousand of firefighters and extensive additional resources to bring final containment,
5. Often cause huge property and other cultural losses in addition to vegetation destroyed.

Strong easterly winds are likely at the northern Sierra crest late tonight and Saturday morning as strong surface high pressure builds into the Great Basin. Warmer temperatures and dry conditions are expected early next week, with the potential for cooler, wetter, and windier weather late week.

Collapsed building getting new roof and new look
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/05/2017 - 9:26pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Work crews have been busy at the historic Pioneer Center on Harrison Avenue where a roof collapsed on January 23, flooding out the liquor store and thrift shop beneath it.
Hoyt Holmes of H.W. Holmes Incorporated has been hired to rebuild the structure which will have a smaller version of the liquor store and a new retail/coffee shop space as well as the existing Port-of-Subs, Sierra Veterinary Hospital, Rojo's and Jalisco's.
Holmes said the new roof will be up by October 31 and construction should be complete around the beginning of 2018.

Fire burning in Douglas County consumes almost 1700 acres
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/03/2017 - 5:44pm7:00PM UPDATE 10/4 - The Cutter Fire burning in the Pine Nut Mountains of Douglas County has now burned through 1,697 acres of brush. A chainsaw started the fire which started on October 3 at 12:19 p.m. Several firefighters are on the scene according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

The Cutter Fire in Douglas County has burned 650 acres since starting just after noon Tuesday, according to Sierra Front. The brush fire is burning in the area of U.S. 395 in the Pine Nut Mountains near Leviathan Mine Road in Douglas County.

This exclusive job fair is the product of an ongoing relationship between the school and the resort. In past years representatives from Sierra visited Mt. Tallac to teach the students valuable interviewing skills and invite them to their community job fairs.
Sierra-at-Tahoe came for the job fair as a direct result of the school's annual Meet & Greet with the community.
Family made homeless by hurricanes looking for home for their dogs
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/26/2017 - 7:31pmAs we watched the horrific images out of the islands of the Caribbean after the one-two punch of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, we saw people wading through waist-deep water to get to safety, with no homes or belongings to go back to.
Two of those residents who lost their home in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands are on a road trip and currently in Lake Tahoe. "We needed to get to nature," Lissa Ress explained about how they ended up in the Sierra.

Warming temps for South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/25/2017 - 6:34amClear skies and light winds are expected through the coming week as a ridge of high pressure along the west coast gradually strengthens, leading a slow warming trend.
Aside from some freezing fog near Truckee and the Sierra Valley, benign conditions remain on tap for the near future as that high pressures continues to build. According to some modules, there is the potential for cooler and wetter weather toward the end of the first week of October, but in the meantime its dry with above normal temperatures by the weekend.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Cali. - Winter may have popped into town for a few days, but fall is back as so is the 23rd annual Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson October 7-8.
This popular rite of passage features the required Oktoberfest and fall inspired brews as well as activities for the whole family from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. Admission and parking are free, and festival goers are encouraged to take advantage of the free bike valet in front of the Mountain Sports Center. Bikers will receive an ice cream coupon when they valet their bikes.

How does the 2017 yellow jacket population compare to previous years? Will a changing climate mean more regular population increases of these stinging things?
Join Dr. Lynn Kimsey, from the UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology will speak at the next Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) talk in Incline Village on September 21 at 5:30 p.m.
Get an overview of yellow jacket diversity and biology and learn how to distinguish them from other wasps. Dr. Kimsey will also discuss effects and treatments of stings, and even more importantly, how to prevent or treat outbreaks.

Susie was born November 24, 1967 with her surviving twin sister, Lisa Watson of South Lake Tahoe, California to Paul Watson of Gardnerville, Nevada and Beverly Pinkley, deceased.
