Jacks Valley Road along the base of the Sierra will be reconstructed starting Monday, June 12.

Q&D Construction, Inc won the contract and began pre-work last week with lowering utilities and mobilizing all the needed equipment.

The project will involve roadway and driveway work from Genoa Lane north to Alpine View Court. On Monday, grinding and pulverizing of the existing surface will start in the Town of Genoa and proceed north. The entire roadway will be repaved during the final construction stages.

The project is expected to be finished at the end of August.

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory in Reno is reporting another earthquake for the Carson Valley. The most recent one registered 3.5 and was located 11.8 miles southeast of Gardnerville at 9:31 p.m. Friday, June 9.

This follows a small swarm of quakes in the area that started on Tuesday, June 6 when a 3.9 tremor occurred.

In the Mammoth Lakes region tonight there have been six earthquakes 1.1 - 2.1.

In the last 48 hours there have been three dozen earthquakes, the largest being 3.74 and the smallest being about 1.0 in an area between Gardnerville and Topaz Lake.

"This is the nature of earthquakes," said Mickey Cassar, a records tech with seismic data at University of Nevada, Reno. "There are ebbs and flows. Earthquakes happen this way, a sequence goes on for awhile."

Mammoth Lakes, Calif., and Hawthorne, Nevada have had several dozen earthquakes over the past few months, 35 in Mammoth Lakes and almost 55 in Hawthorne just this week.

It’s going to be a paddler’s paradise this summer.

In the last 12 hours there have been several tumblers according to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno. The largest of the 24 recorded on their equipment was a 3.9 earthquake at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, 12.4 miles southeast of Gardnerville, Nevada.

It was followed by a 2.2 earthquake at 3:51 p.m.

Earthquakes are not uncommon through the Sierra and Northern Nevada.

The UCCE Master Gardeners of South Lake Tahoe are having part one (vegetables only) of their 4th annual Plant Sale this Friday, June 9 at the Ski Run Farmers Market from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., or until they sell out of plants. I took a couple of field trips this month related to learning more about cannabis and how it may affect our city if retail, commercial grows, testing, and edible production are implemented. I learned a lot and will share some of the highlights with you.

The first trip was to Breckenridge, a visit I piggybacked on top of a wedding I attended in Vail. I met with their Mayor, City Manager (formerly the police chief) and the assistant city manager. We met for two hours and our talk was primarily centered on their experiences with the legalization of cannabis in Breckenridge.

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is planning to more than double their current cloud seeding program over the American River watershed from the current 190 square miles to 444 square miles.

Since 1968, SMUD has been involved in the practice of cloud seeding in El Dorado, Amador, and Placer counties to benefit electricity generation in the Upper American River Project (UARP) in Eldorado National Forest.

9:25 p.m. update: Several readers are reporting their power has been restored on Mandan, Golden Bear, part of Sierra Tract. It looks like all should be back on soon if you're still experiencing an outage.

The Liberty Utilities website is still showing 3705 customers out. They have not said what the cause of the outage was at this time.

Liberty Utilities is reporting a widespread power outage in South Lake Tahoe. As of 9:00 p.m., 3705 customers are out along Pioneer Trail, Black Bart, Sierra Tract, Sierra House and a few other areas.

Temperatures are flirting 80, and in fact the initial forecast for this week in South Lake Tahoe had two days with 80s. The National Weather Service has dropped their forecast by a couple of degrees, but still a fabulous weekend ahead for Tahoe.

There is a 30 percent chance of showers on Wednesday but just for the day.

The small stream flood advisory due to snowmelt has been extended through Tuesday for Plumas, Mono, Alpine, El Dorado, Placer, Sierra, Nevada, Douglas and Washoe Counties along with Western Carson City.

Captivating audiences from coast to coast, Tintabulations Handbell Ensemble returns to present their 2017 Spring/Summer concert series, "Cam-pa-no-lo-gy,
the art or practice of bell ringing."

A homegrown community handbell ensemble, Tintabulations has grown from a small group of artistic director Barb Walsh's students to a nationally and internationally respected and sought after ensemble.

The Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra club gave away $21,000 on Thursday at their annual youth awards and scholarship ceremony.

Daniel Deemer is biking across America on his "Bike for the Homeless" tour from Big Sur, California to Ocean City, Maryland to bring awareness to a social issue he is deeply passionate about.

In partnership with Tahoe Youth and Family Services, Dan is using the trip in an effort to raise funds for the agency and increase awareness of homelessness.

Dan will be leaving Big Sur on May 22, 2017. He has no predetermined route, but will be passing through the Sierra Nevada on SR-88, and through South Lake Tahoe.

The Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and Sierra Nevada College (SNC) partnership now offers bachelor's degrees in Global Business Management, Ski Business Resort Management, Psychology, and Elementary Education. All classes are taught on the the LTCC campus in South Lake Tahoe.

Courses are offered at the discounted tuition rate of $382 per credit. Already and student and want to transfer? Transfer your credits and pay only for the courses you need to graduate. Total upper-level tuition as low as $17,190 and Federal Student Aid is available to eligible applicants.

The Silver Rush, a new 4,159-foot long zip line opening this summer at Heavenly's Epic Discovery, will take users from tree-to-tree at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. Overlooking the Carson Valley, Silver Rush is comprised of five segmented zip lines; the final of which flies guests over the waters of East Peak Lake.

Once the ride is completed, guests enjoy a scenic ATV ride back to the top of the Gondola. It is a three-hour long experience.

Katie Hall, the cyclist who won Amgen Stage 2 in South Lake Tahoe. retained the leader jersey after Stage 3 on Saturday which took racers 73.3 miles from Elk Grove to Sacramento. Hall, who races for UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team, placed 17 in Stage 3.

The winner was American Coryn Rivera who races for Team Sunweb from the Netherlands.

The inaugural Lake Tahoe Brewfest is coming to the South Shore on Saturday, June 10 from noon to 5:00 p.m., and will be the first major event to bring together all of the breweries from the Lake Tahoe area’s emerging beer scene.

The Swiss Chalet Center at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sierra Boulevard will be the scene for the family-friendly event which will feature local arts and crafts, food, live music, games and more.

It's been a decade in the planning, with a long permitting and environmental process broken up by a lawsuit, but Sierra Colina is finally on the last lap of becoming a new housing project on the South Shore.

The 18-acre parcel in-between Lake Village and Sushi Pier will have 44 single-family homes and side-by-side townhouses ranging in sizes from just under 2,200 sq. ft. to 2,900 sq ft. They will be three- and four-bedroom homes to meet the different needs of the buyer according to Brian Helm, of Paradigm8 Partners, the developers of the project.

"I love Tahoe," Olympic Gold medalist Kristen Armstrong said as she greeted South Tahoe Middle School (STMS) students on Wednesday. "You're lucky to have the mountains and the lake."

Armstrong, a four-time Olympian and three-time gold medalist stopped by two South Lake Tahoe schools (South Tahoe Middle School and Sierra House Elementary) to meet with students and deliver a message.
