Lake Tahoe ski resorts take 8 of top 10 "Biggest snow days of ski season"

The winter of 2016-2017 has been exceptional for skiers across the entire west. Colorado has flourished, California has shed any trace of drought and Jackson Hole is on a pace to break its own record for snowfall.

With so much snow, nearly every ski resort has piled up powder days. For those who took a ski trip this year and missed a big snowfall, it truly was a bad break, as storms have consistently stalked the west all year.

During a season so outstanding for snow, there have been a handful of storms, often one on top of another, that have produced gaudy one-day snow totals.

Sierra "phenomenal" snowpack not a record, but water content at 179% of average

The Sierra Nevada snowpack continues to build during one of the wettest winters in California’s recorded history and this was evident as the monthly snow survey was conducted by the Department of Water Resources at Phillips Station near Sierra-at-Tahoe.

The snow water equivalent (SWE) measured was 179 percent of average, or 43.4 inches.

The 113 inches of snow at Phillips Station contains the fifth-highest March 1 reading of the SWE. In 1969, the record reading was 57.4 inches of snow-water content in 160.9 inches of water.

South Lake Tahoe school boundaries discussed at next LTUSD board meeting

During the last meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Trustees, discussion about neighborhood schools and theme schools surrounded the proposed STEAM Academy at Al Tahoe Elementary when it reopens. STEAM - science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics - would be the focus of all students at the school, much as the themes surround all other local elementary schools.

At the request of the board, LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater will present the demographic data from each school in relation to where they reside.

Opinion: Why themed schools work in South Lake Tahoe

As we look at reopening the Al Tahoe Elementary School as a STEAM academy, it is important to take a look back at the journey Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has taken to get to where we are today.

Following decades of desegregation efforts and forced busing, lawsuits in the 1990s effectively brought a halt to desegregation efforts in the country. Neighborhood schools in South Lake Tahoe may have been segregated, not only based on race, but based on income levels.
