High winds ahead of weekend snow storm in Lake Tahoe

Another system is headed into the Lake Tahoe basin on Friday, bringing with it winds 20-30 mph with prolonged wind gusts from 30-55 mph. The wind advisory is in effect from 10:00 a.m. Friday to 4:00 p.m. Saturday.
Waves are expected to be 2-4 feet with the highest ones on the north and east shores.
Sierra-at-Tahoe to open for the season on Saturday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/23/2016 - 5:49pmSierra-at-Tahoe Resort announced today that they will be opening for the season on Saturday, November 26. There are early season condition on limited terrain with two chairlifts and two surface lifts in operation. Sierra will spin Easy Rider Express and Rock Garden with access to Broadway and Echo beginner trails. There will be a terrain park with small to medium features, allowing guests to get their park legs back underneath them. For now, their hours of operations are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Weidinger PR received awards for each of its three entries: one Silver Spike and two Awards of Excellence.
The firm won the Silver Spike award in the category, Special Events and Observances, 1 or 2 Days, for their planning of the Edgewood Tahoe Lodge groundbreaking.

Winter weather advisory in effect until Sunday afternoon for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/19/2016 - 12:11amExpect a windy and snowy weekend in South Lake Tahoe! Ski resorts on the South Shore had to postpone opening days, so maybe Mother Nature will be helping them out!
There is a wind advisory in place for South Lake Tahoe in advance of the winter storm headed our way. Expect winds 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph overnight Friday, increasing Saturday to 20-30 mph and gusts to 55 mph. Ridgetop winds could gust up to 110 mph. Waves on the lake are expected to be 2-5' with the highest on the north and east shore.
The winds subside slightly as a winter storm moves in.

Another chance for snow headed to South Lake Tahoe this weekend
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/17/2016 - 10:48pmSouth Lake Tahoe didn't get much of anything from the last storm that passed through, but perhaps another storm coming into the Lake Tahoe basin Saturday might do a little better.
This next storm system is likely to produce weather impacts for the eastern Sierra and western Nevada this weekend according to the National Weather Service. Snow levels could drop to 6500-7000 ft.
Thursday Night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 24. Southeast wind around 5 mph.
Friday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 50. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Five businesses cited for selling alcohol to minors in Douglas County

On November 2, Douglas County Sheriff's Office visited 28 businesses with liquor licenses to determine if they were being compliant with state law and not selling to minors.
Wal-Mart North County, Maverick, World Market, Grocery Outlet and Lucky Discount Liquor all received citations for furnishing alcohol to people under the age of 21. The employees who sold the alcohol was also cited.
The following businesses were checked and they successfully passed the alcohol compliance check.
Ski resorts at Lake Tahoe prepare for opening day
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/14/2016 - 2:01pm1:30 pm update 11/15/26 - Many of the Lake Tahoe area ski resorts updated their opening dates today. Heavenly and Northstar will now open on Wednesday, November 23, Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe dates have yet to be determined.

The National Weather Service says to expect snow levels rapidly falling along the cold front Wednesday, and possible into Thursday morning. Gusty winds are anticipated Tuesday into Wednesday. Snowfall amounts, and exact timing of storm will become more evident to forecasters as the storm gets closer.
But before then, get out and enjoy Fall in South Lake Tahoe!

After approval of the plan in December 2012, a lawsuit was filed by the Tahoe Area Sierra Club and Friends of the West Shore to block implementation of the plan in February 2013.

Storm bringing up to 18" of snow at upper elevations of Lake Tahoe

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the region from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sunday for areas above 6,500 feet.
Snow accumulations should be 6" to 18" above 7,000 feet with up to 6" down to 6,500 feet. Up to 2" at lake level are possible.
The snow levels wills tart around the 7,000 ft level, lowersing to 6,000 feet by late Sunday morning.

Two storms headed to Lake Tahoe bringing rain, wind and snow

The first storm will hit Thursday into Friday, with the other one right on its tail Saturday night into Sunday.
Storm one:
Hurricane Seymour off the coast of Mexico will bring heavy rainfall that will likely cause travel delays, especially for those driving across the Sierra. The peak period for heavy rain looks like it will be early Friday morning. Rain will spillover into Western Nevada as well, so be prepared with ponding water on the roadway.
Special fraud officer appointed to oversee elections in El Dorado County

“Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted without it being stolen because of fraud," said Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert. "The Department of Justice will act promptly and aggressively to protect the integrity of the election process.”
Conservancy looks into selling 4 parcels that could benefit the Tahoe Valley Area Plan
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/25/2016 - 10:13pmWhen one sees a vacant lot in the Lake Tahoe Basin with a California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) sign placed on a tree within its borders, it normally that means the parcel will remain vacant.
And in most cases, that is true.
In the basin, CTC owns 4,780 parcels of land totaling 6,400 acres, many of those parcels are about 1/4 acre in size. In the 1980s and 1990s, most of these smaller lots were purchased due to their being deemed environmentally sensitive. If a lot, or a portion of a lot, was once considered to be sensitive, they are permanently protected and cannot be built upon.

Drought outlook grim for Lake Tahoe and California
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/22/2016 - 8:45amThe graphics and news released this week for the seasonal drought outlook for the Sierra Nevada and the rest of the west look rather grim for those wanting a big winter and extra water to replenish lakes, reservoirs and rivers.
According to the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), the drought ends for some parts of Northern California, but mild temperatures and below average precipitation will cause the drought to continue.
Pilot identified in plane crash near Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/21/2016 - 10:01pmThe El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body of a man found Tursday near the site of a plane crash southwest of Lake Tahoe as Tyrell Kremer of Wilton, Calif.
Kremer, 52, was flying from Idaho to Jackson on Saturday, October 15 after what friends say was a weeklong hunting trip. Family and friends grew concerned Saturday afternoon when he hadn't returned as expected and official news of a missing aircraft were issued Saturday evening.

South Lake Tahoe council candidates share their views on sustainability and climate issues

The Citizen's Climate Lobby is an organization focused on national policies to address climate change, and the South Lake Tahoe chapter is one of 354 in the United States and abroad.
Patricia Sussman of the local chapter said just five of the candidates responded to their questions.
Body and wreckage of airplane found southwest of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/18/2016 - 4:31pmA missing aircraft and its pilot were located Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. in a rugged area of the Sierra Nevada southwest of Lake Schmidell, which is west of Maggie's Peak and Lake Tahoe.
Searchers found the wreckage as a result of a photograph taken by a Civil Air Patrol crew who was flying in the probable location of the missing aircraft. The coordinates from the photograph were passed along to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s ground team who hiked into the site and confirmed the crashed aircraft and a deceased male victim outside of the plane.
Plane missing southwest of Lake Tahoe, overdue on trip from Idaho
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/16/2016 - 1:10pm5:00 p.m. update: According to the Acorn News in Jackson, Calif., the missing Cessna 182 is normally hangared in Amador County. Authorities Continuing Search for Missing Cessna 182. They said the plane was expected at Westover Field on Saturday.
The pilot left Idaho, headed to Jackson during a storm in the Sierra. Many pilots will take a southern route to Westover Field, which takes a plane between Highway 50 and 88. It is unknown at this time which route was taken.
Weather conditions continue to prevent search operations.

Heavy rain totals with Saturday's storm in the Sierra, more on the way
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/16/2016 - 8:45amSince Friday morning, rain has pummeled many areas of the Sierra Nevada. As of 8:00 a.m. Sunday, South Lake Tahoe had received 2.54" of rain, with more on the way. By Monday morning, a trace of new snow could be seen on the South Shore.
Little Valley Fire is now 55% contained, 3,400 acres burned
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/15/2016 - 4:55pm10/16/16 update 7:00PM - The Little Valley Fire is holding at 3,400 acres with 55 percent containment. 667 personnel remain on the incident. More rain forecast tonight which will aid in extinguishing the fire which started on Friday.
22 residences and 17-outbuildings were destroyed with 480 homes saved in the direct vicinity of the fire. Multiple structures remain under threat until 100-percent containment has been achieved.

10:00PM update - Current acreage burned in the Little Valley Fire has been revised at 3,400 acres with 20 percent containment this evening.
I-580 and Eastlake reopen as Little Valley Fire burns 2,000 acres; 19 homes burn

The Sierra Front Type III Incident Management Team reports that 22 residences and 17-outbuildings have been destroyed. 500 structures are still under threat.
Interstate 580 is open in both directions, as is old U.S. Highway 395. Franktown Road, the area where most of the home damage is, remains closed.

Small fire burns again in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/12/2016 - 1:35pmWhat is becoming almost a daily occurrence, firefighters in South Lake Tahoe have responded to another fire in the forested area in the outskirts of the city.
On Wednesday, at 2:11 p.m., an El Dorado County Sheriff's deputy spotted smoke and made the first call to 911. The fire started in the area between Lodi Avenue in the Sierra Tract and the Lake Tahoe Airport.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, .18 acre burned. As of 4:00 p.m., there is a full containment line and firefighters remain on the scene.
