Wintertime in Tahoe means skiing and snowboarding for visitors and locals alike. Few other places on earth have the abundance of snow sports opportunities that we enjoy in the Tahoe basin. With all the excitement and fun, we can sometimes forget the few simple measures that can help us prevent the occasional, but largely avoidable injuries.

Consider the following when you’re headed out to your favorite resort so that your après ski plans do not include a trip to the ER.

Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts Prepare for the Holidays

Last week’s winter storm dropped up to three feet of fresh natural snow on Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort, creating a winter wonderland and allowing the resorts to open more terrain for skiers and riders hoping for a white holiday season.

South Lake Tahoe in the Running For "America's Best Ski Destination"

Voters chose Lake Tahoe as "America's Best Lake" in 2012 and the local area is now up for another top honor as "America's Best Ski Destination."

The Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority is seeking votes from the local community through the month until the contest's end on December 30 at 8:50 pm PST. Online votes can be made daily on the voting site. North Lake Tahoe is also in the running along with Sun Valley, Idaho and other big resorts.

Travel Nevada Winter Ad Campaign Highlights Skiing in Lake Tahoe

A brand new winter advertising campaign was launched this week by the Nevada Tourism Commission. The $1.3 million project promotes the Lake Tahoe area as a premier skiing destination.

During the course of the campaign, the ad, which highlights music from the Las Vegas band, the Killers, will be seen this winter on cable and television stations in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas and should be seen by nearly 95 million people.

Northstar and Heavenly Open on Saturday, Kirkwood Aiming for Monday

Heavenly Mountain Resort had to postpone their Opening Day to Saturday due to the region's high winds today. They'll have 1.5 miles of open runs with the Gondola and Tamarack Express running. On the north shore, Northstar is opening on Saturday as well with 3 lifts and 4 runs opened. Kirkwood has been making snow to go on top of the 9" of fresh powder received in this week's storm. They are planning on opening Monday but will not know for sure until Sunday's efforts and weather determine that.

Kirkwood to Offer Free Backcountry Awareness Clinics at San Francisco Sports Basement Stores

Expedition Kirkwood will be holding free backcountry awareness clinics at the Sports Basement stores at the Presidio and on Bryant Street the weekend of Dec. 2-3.

“Most incidents that occur in the backcountry happen because people are not prepared to be there,” explains Jon Copeland, Director of Expedition Kirkwood. “Two of our goals at Expedition Kirkwood are to educate people on making smart decisions when in the backcountry and to train them on how to make a predetermined plan.”

Bobby Brown Dominates 2,750 ft Long Slopestyle Course Built at Kirkwood

As the chairlifts at Kirkwood Mountain Resort came to a halt this past spring, the Snow Park Technologies (SPT) snowcats were powering up. For twenty days, an SPT crew of seven logged 1,200 hours building the slopestyle course of Bobby Brown’s dreams. Three years ago the professional skier, who is based in Denver, CO, was asking friends, “What’s next for slopestyle skiing?” The result is Red Bull Megaslope, a 2,750-foot long course that flawlessly incorporates six epic features winding across the natural terrain of the mountain.

Ski season winter pass option features three Lake Tahoe resorts

With less than 100 days until the beginning of the 2013-2014 Lake Tahoe ski and ride season, now is the time to purchase the best-valued season pass to Tahoe’s three premier mountain destinations, Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar.

The Tahoe Local and Tahoe Value Passes offer access to more than 263 trails, 14 terrain parks and 10,270 acres all on one pass; but the current season pass prices are only guaranteed through September 2, 2013.

Forest Service seeks comment on proposed Homewood special use permit

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is asking for public input on the proposed Homewood Mountain Resort 20-year Ski Slope Permit. The permit would allow Homewood to continue to provide downhill skiing and snowboarding opportunities on the recently acquired Quail Lake parcel.

The Forest Service purchased the Quail Lake parcel from Homewood Mountain Resort in 2009. Prior to the purchase, the parcel was used for skiing and snowboarding along with Homewood’s grooming operation.

Kirkwood to host annual 'Near Death Experience' Bike Camp

Sierra-at-Tahoe resort offers $25 customer appreciation day tickets

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort will give skiers and riders one last chance to shred Sierra Resort on April 15 with its Annual Customer Appreciation Day. Customer Appreciation Day is all about celebrating the season with fun stories of a season gone by and smiles.

Skiers and riders of all ages can purchase a lift ticket for only $25 on April 15. All of the proceeds raised from the day’s lift ticket sales will be donated to sponsor youth recreation and education including youth baseball, soccer, swimming, and other youth activities.
