SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The national Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is fighting for equality in the upcoming midterm elections and to gather support locally, no matter which side of the aisle one votes, an event is being held at Sidellis Brewery on Thursday, October 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

HRC is working with the ALLY clubs at both South Tahoe High School (STHS) and Lake Tahoe Community College to engage LGBTQ voices and mobilize pro-equality voters to hold lawmakers accountable.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What started off as baby steps to legal cannabis businesses and regulations in South Lake Tahoe has morphed into a run to a proposed cannabis ordinance that could potentially bring 15 new licenses to town.

On Sunday, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) powered down almost 60,000 homes and businesses as a safety measure due to high winds and low humidity, the recipe for fire.

In El Dorado County, 30,819 customers had their power shut down Sunday, October 14, with an additional 8,722 in Placer County, 2,797 in Calavares County, and 17,000 more in Lake, Sonoma and Napa counties.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Officers Association, the California Nurses Association and South Lake Tahoe Firefighters Association will be hosting a Public Safety Forum with the candidates for South Lake Tahoe City Council on Thursday, October 25, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

This event will be hosted in the Aspen/Board Room of Lake Tahoe Community College and will utilize a standard candidate forum format. All candidates will be provided time for opening and closing statements, each two minutes in length.

The Clean Tahoe Program would like to extend our sincere thanks to Ricky Reich for a $53,000 donation that allowed the program to purchase a new truck for our field crew. The donation came as a result of an emergency situation, as one of our much-used trucks was involved in an accident and deemed a total loss.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A sewer blockage at a home on Kokanee Trail sent sewage into the street gutter and flowing into a storm drain Friday morning in South Lake Tahoe.

South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) received a call at 8:15 a.m. October 12 reporting a leak in the 3000 block of Kokanee Trail. Upon investigation they found the spill and immediately responded with a vactor truck and suctioned up the overflow to prevent additional sewage from flowing into the storm drain. Once the
spill was stopped, the crew worked to clean it up.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a referendum to put a halt to the South Lake Tahoe cannabis ordinance was successful, a meeting held Monday was to work through the points of the ordinance Cody Bass and Tahoe Wellness Cooperative took issue with.

Led by the City Council representatives Austin Sass and Brooke Laine, members of the original cannabis workgroup, Cody Bass and some members of the public, about two dozen in total, spent three hours trying to come up direction for the city attorney to use in creating a new ordinance.

A South Lake Tahoe man won gold in the Heavyweight Para-Division of the Abu-Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Tournament recently in Los Angeles.

Ryan Wallace, who we've written many stories about over the last four years, competed against para-athletes from around the world for the second consecutive year at the tournament. In 2017 Wallace won the silver medal and he spent the last year working tirelessly to improve, capping his 2018 performance with a hard fought 7-0 victory.

"I was grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate that improvement," said Wallace.

Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (Tahoe Chamber) is hosting a candidate forum on October 4 for candidates running for South Lake Tahoe City Council. Three City Council member seats are up for election, which includes those held by incumbents, and candidates, Wendy David, Tom Davis and Austin Sass. All nine candidates are confirmed to attend.

The forum will be held in the Lake Tahoe Community College Board Room from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - September 21, 2018 is the date the City of South Lake Tahoe will start accepting development agreements for the six cannabis licenses up for grabs after City Council approved a cannabis ordinance on August 21, 2018.

That is, unless a group spearheaded by Cody Bass of Tahoe Wellness Cooperative and his attorney James Anthony gets enough signatures to stop the process.

In classic Tahoe style, when there is a problem we study it. In the past five years, the housing issue has been studied on several fronts. In that time, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Placer County and the North Tahoe-Truckee area have all conducted Housing Studies and the City of South Lake Tahoe updated its Housing Element. What has been the result of all these studies? This column highlights the key recommendations from those studies and where we are now in terms of implementation.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Thursday, the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors discussed changing their administrative code to allow for the transfer of sewer and water units from one parcel to another in order to encourage the building of affordable housing projects.

Since 2012, the transfer of the sewer units have not been allowed by STPUD, but with the current lack of affordable housing on the South Shore the board will look to approve a change of the code at their September 20, 2018 meeting.

The South Lake Tahoe Library just wrapped up another great Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children, teens and adults to read all summer long. Patrons at our library logged a total of 5,236 books and earned a total of 817 prizes! We would like to thank the businesses and organizations that donated prizes and funds to our program.

Prizes that children could choose from included gift certificates from Applebee’s Restaurant, Blue Dog Gourmet Pizza, Heavenly Village Cinema, McDonalds, and Modern Makers. Thank you to all of these businesses for their generous donations!

Two people have been confirmed as deceased in Sunday's plane crash near Slide Mountain that sparked a 64-acre fire.

According to the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, they now have the bodies and autopsies will be performed on each of the crash victims.

The names of the deceased are currently being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next-of-kin. As soon as both decedents are identified, an announcement will be issued releasing the names.

What rattles our communities across our nation to their core? Drug abuse. Approximately 100 people each day die from drug overdoses. Whole industries of products and programs are being developed to combat this problem. Every day more grandparents are now “parenting” their grandchildren so they can be raised in a stable and healthy environment. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is costing our Nation over $740 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity and health care.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe man who died in Lake Tahoe Monday has been identified as 74-year-old Robert Hill.

Mr. Hill left his home in the Tahoe Keys on Monday, August 27, 2018 at about 8:30 a.m. to go fly his model airplane on the Lighthouse Shore beach. According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), it appears the model plane crashed into Lake Tahoe and he went in to retrieve it.

It was another successful summer for the Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) team after they gave away 2,255 bags of food during their nine-week long program feeding local youth. This was almost double the number of bags given away the previous summer.

For three years, BB4K has given weekly backpacks of food to qualifying children at Bijou, Sierra House, Tahoe Valley, Magnet and South Tahoe Middle schools. During the 2017-18 school year, 5,449 backpacks of food were distributed.
