LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - A fire Wednesday evening caused moderate fire damage and heavy smoke damage to a home in the Elk Point area of Douglas County.
At 6:55 p.m., Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) responded to the fire on Elks Lane north of Nevada Beach.
The grease fire started in the kitchen of the home after dinner was left on the stove as the occupants watched the playoff baseball game according to TDFPD Fire Marshal Eric Guevin. The fire quickly moved into the living room. Guevin told South Tahoe Now that they almost had a flashover but due to the quick response of TDFPD, it was knocked down.
Newly installed smoke detectors alerted the three residents who were able to get out of the house with their dog. Guevin said one person was asleep in a downstairs room and was awakened by the smoke alarm. Another person suffered minor burns to their hands and feet, Guevin said.
The three-unit home is not inhabitable at this time and the Red Cross will be assisting the residents who are all staying with friends tonight.
All four fire engines of Tahoe Douglas Fire responded as units from South Lake Tahoe and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District covered their region in the Lake Tahoe portion of the Douglas County.
