September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month. Join the South Lake Tahoe Branch Library with a parent during the month of September and either sign-up for a new library card or show an existing library card. Every student will receive a prize for participating and will be enrolled in a drawing on Oct 2. Services aimed at getting students ready for college are available for up to 500 South Tahoe Middle School and South Tahoe High School this school year through a Lake Tahoe Community College federally funded grant program.

The Department of Education grant that started in the tail end of last school year consists of $230,000 a year for five years to provide services to 500 low-income, first generation college-bound students at the middle and high schools.

The newspaper headline on page one on Aug. 15, 2002 said it all:

Yes, they did! And, they did it in record-setting style.
Four athletes, who are personal friends of Elaine and I, completed 10 very physically and mentally-demanding challenges in a period of 10 grueling days, way back in 2002.
I know because we were there for each and every one of those 10 memorable days that resulted in the very first Nevada 10-in-10 Challenge going into the Nevada record book.
Those four were Karl Horeis, Jeremy Evans, Rick Gunn and K. M. Cannon.

Just a few years ago home buyers were choosing the Nevada side over the California side when looking for a Lake Tahoe home to purchase. Taxes were lower and schools were better so Nevada was more attractive. But is that still the feeling? There's good news, and bad news, depending on which neighborhood/state you're set on owning a home in.
