Man runs 65 miles to South Lake Tahoe to show support for law enforcement

It is early, but not too early to prevent a group of people to come see Camino resident Hervé Leconte leave on his 65-mile run to the EDSO building in South Lake Tahoe.

USFS using chemicals at 70 sites to remove invasive plants
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/09/2016 - 9:52pmEarlier this week, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) resumed a project to eradicate, control, and contain known infestations of invasive plants in the Lake Tahoe Basin using chemical treatment. The work will continue at approximately 70 infestation sites through September, 2016.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.

Three new message signs were unveiled in South Lake Tahoe this week, just in time for the holiday weekend. Since the fourth of July is a big tourist draw, it is the perfect time to test out all the message signs can provide to those on the road.

Liberty Utilities begins tree removal for electrical line upgrade at North Shore

Reno man dies in Echo Summit motorcycle accident
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/16/2016 - 2:32pmThere were two motorcycle accidents over the weekend on the same stretch of Highway 50 near Twin Bridges, resulting in fatality and another person being injured.
On Saturday, May 14 at approximately 5:47 p.m., a 49-year-old Martin Gastanaga of Reno was riding his motorcycle eastbound when he, for unknown reasons, lost control of the bike on a curve, and was ejected.
The California Highway Patrol says the driver was traveling 50 mph just east of Twin Bridges.
Gastanaga died at the scene.
Mental Health Awareness: Reducing number of adults with mental illness in jails

The initiative, signed by two hundred fifty counties, has one lofty goal: reduce the number of adults with mental illness in the criminal justice system.

The U.S. Forest Service, the Nevada Division of State Lands and the Nevada Division of Forestry will start the fire operations on Monday, May 2, weather permitting.

Officer hanging up her shield after 29 years with SLTPD

Hunt for Bigfoot, of course.
That is what South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Donna Kingman said she'll be doing after hanging up her shield after 29 years of working in the community. Her official last day is April 30, but Thursday was her last shift working in uniform.
Of course, she won't be hunting for Bigfoot in cold, shaded areas as she'll be seeking sun and a life of being "footloose and fancy free."

Rock slide closes Highway 50 on Echo Summit; Boulders being removed
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/12/2016 - 6:30pmA rock slide near Johnson Pass Road closed both lanes of Highway 50 at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. Most of the rocks could be moved to the side of the road, but two large boulders had to wait for heavy equipment to be pushed off the roadway according to the California Highway Patrol.
Both lanes were closed but Caltrans is now allowing intermittent traffic through. As of 7:30 p.m., one large boulder remained. They expected to be done with that boulder by 7:30 p.m.
Volunteers needed for Amgen Tour's South Lake Tahoe competition
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/11/2016 - 10:02pmThe Amgen Tour of California South Lake Tahoe Organizing Committee is seeking 300 volunteers for the combined stages for men and women on Thursday, May 19, 2016.
The men’s elite race Stage 5 will begin in Lodi, Calif. at 10 a.m., and finish around 3:45 p.m. at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe totaling 132.4 miles. The women’s Stage 1 will start at 10:50 a.m. and finish approximately at 2:00 p.m. at Heavenly, totaling 72.7 miles.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Chiapa Drive to Kyburz Avenue: Motorists can expect intermittent full highway closures at various locations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for survey work.
U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Truckee Drive to Rubicon Trail/Carson Avenue in South Lake Tahoe: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect the #2 lane and right shoulder closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday for utility work.
Rubbernecking leads to three car pileup on Echo Summit
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/06/2016 - 2:10pmA three car collision on Echo Summit Saturday, April 2 was the result of one driver not paying attention to the road in front of him on the second day of what happens to be Distracted Driver Month.
The California Highway Patrol had responded to an accident on Highway 50 just west of Old Meyers Grade. As they were taking care of that incident, a Subaru Legacy driven by Ray Garcia, 48, of South Lake Tahoe was heading west when he looked to the left to observe the previous accident.
Public meetings on transportation changes in Meyers

El Dorado County is proposing roadway and multi-us path improvements for the Meyers community, and they are inviting the public to participate during three different outreach meetings on Friday, April 22.
The proposed changes are meant to make the transportation options more safe and attractive for those living in the area as well those visiting or passing through. One option already mentioned by Caltrans is the addition of a roundabout at the Highway 50/Highway 89 intersection to slow down traffic coming from Echo Summit.

TRPA public hearing for Cave Rock project on March 31

The proposal to install a 60-foot-long tunnel extension at Cave Rock this summer is the subject of a public hearing by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency on March 31, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.
The agency's hearings officer will meet with all interested parties, public included, on the Nevada Department of Transportation's project to create a safer tunnel due to the falling rock and deteriorating hillside on the westbound lanes of Highway 50 entering the tunnel.

As of 11:45 a.m. Sunday:
Highway 50 - Chains or 4WD with snow tires from 3 miles east of Kyburz to Meyers
State Route 89 is closed at Emerald Bay. Chains are required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires from Picketts Junction to Christmas Valley. Chains required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires from 5 miles north of the Y to Emerald Bay.
Chain controls going up on Lake Tahoe roads
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/12/2016 - 8:07pmThe next way in a series of storms over the Sierra has made its way into Lake Tahoe tonight, with forecasters predicting up to two feet of snow at lake level by Monday morning.
Interstate 80 has had chain controls up for much of the afternoon, and Highway 50 has just put theirs up.
As of 8 p.m. Saturday, controls are now up on Highway 50 from Twin Bridges to Meyers, with chains required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires.

Four arrested after high speed chase through Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe crime

Two different high speed chases through the Carson Valley and up Kingsbury Grade resulted in the arrest of two men and two women on Saturday, February 27, 2017.
At 3:10 p.m., a trooper from the Nevada Highway Patrol spotted a silver Mercedes-Benz with California plates going down U.S. 50 (Spooner Summit) at 85 mph. The driver failed to pull over for the trooper, instead turning South on Highway 395 towards Minden, Nev., at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
Widespread prescribed burns to continue around Lake Tahoe

On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Logan Shoals Vista Point, Camp Galilee, Spooner Summit and Sand Harbor.
On the South Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Spring Creek, Panther Road, and Lake Tahoe Boulevard near Sawmill Road.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/26/2016 - 5:04pmDue to the unsafe intersection of Highway 50 and State Route 89, Caltrans is looking at safety improvements in the area to reduce collisions, and their severity. At this time, the preferred option for Caltrans is adding a roundabout at the intersection to improve conditions after a reported seven accidents at the intersection.
The estimated $3.1 million project is scheduled for construction in 2018-19. It is currently in the environmental phase, with the environmental document scheduled to be finalized in November 2016.
Fire operations to continue at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/22/2016 - 9:39pmCalifornia State Parks, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations started back up today, February 22, 2016.
On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Logan Shoals Vista Point, Spooner Summit and Sand Harbor. Ten acres on Spooner, 15 acres at Logan Shoals, 150 acres at Camp Galilee and 30 acres at Sand Harbor.
On the South Shore, operations are scheduled near Eagle Point Campground, Spring Creek and Panther Road. Five acres in Angora Creek area, 10 acres on Panther, 30 acres at Emerald Bay.
Storm passing through South Lake Tahoe, chain controls remain

The sun is coming out over Lake Tahoe after a quick moving storm left over two feet of snow at the upper elevations, one foot at lake level.
Chain controls remain at this time, with chains are required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires on all 4 wheels from Meyers to Twin Bridges.

Winter Storm Warning until to noon Thursday. Heaviest snow is expected before 8:00 a.m. where snowfall rates could briefly reach 2 to 3 inches per hour.
Wind Advisory from noon to 6:00 p.m. Thursday.
