One storm has entered the Lake Tahoe Basin, and another is waiting off shore, bringing snow and accompanying road controls with it.

The current winter weather advisory is in place until Tuesday at 10:00 a.m., but that is the same time a new winter storm warning goes up. The National Weather Service is forecasting 5-10" at lake level, 10-20" over the Sierra Crest and 10-15" in the Carson Range near Mt. Rose through Tuesday morning. From Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday night, expect another 12-18" at lake level with 2-3 feet above 7000 foot elevation.

The California Highway Patrol is currently working on an accident near Twin Bridges that involved four cars and resulted in two major injuries.

According to Jeff Gardner of the CHP in Meyers, a green Chevy Suburban was disabled when their chains came off just before 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 23. There were six people in the vehicle, and one got out to tend to the chains when they were hit by another vehicle. As another passenger from the Suburban got out to help, they too were hit by a car.

The highly touted snow storm has arrived a bit early. There are chain controls already up on the passes, with accidents being reported on both Highway 50 and I-80.

Chain controls listed below are subject to change as the Winter Storm Warning is in effect until Saturday at 7:00 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued three warnings for the Lake Tahoe Basin:

High Wind Warning in effect until Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Winds will be from the southwest 25 TO 40 mph with gusts 65-70 mph. Gust over 80 mph likely in wind prone areas around Reno, Carson City and Minden. Sierra ridge gusts up to 130 mph. Waves on the lake will be 3 to 7 feet.

TODAY’S WEATHER (NWS GREATER LAKE TAHOE AREA): Partly Cloudy in the morning then becoming Mostly Cloudy. Highs: 39F to 49F. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Gusts up to 30 mph in the afternoon. Ridge Gusts up to 80 mph.

Even though the storm hitting Lake Tahoe this weekend is a wet one, snow levels will fluctuate between 6500 and 8000 feet. Flooding near rivers and streams is already being seen in many areas. Some area passes have been snow covered, including Mt. Rose, Brockway, Echo, Spooner, and Kingsbury Summits. Additional snow amounts of 6 to 10 inches are possible for elevations above 8000 feet, with several inches of snow down to 7000 feet.

As of 10:00 a.m., chain controls are up on Echo Summit, Spooner Summit, Kingsbury Grade, Brockway Summit.

Caltrans is hosting a community meeting on Thursday, December 15 to present design alternatives for a U.S. Highway 50 safety project in the Camino area of El Dorado County, a project that will overlap major highway projects on the Lake Tahoe side of the mountain.

The meeting will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Camino Elementary School, 3060 Snows Road, Camino. A project presentation will take place at 5:45 p.m.

Summit County is currently in the review process for a 28-acre workforce housing site in Keystone from a development partner of Vail Resorts.
