South Lake Tahoe: Expect snow and rain through the day Sunday
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/20/2016 - 9:18amChain controls around most of the South Shore have been lifted this morning, but a Winter Weather Advisory is still in place until 4:00 p.m. Sunday so that can change.
Highway 50 over both Echo and Spooner Summits is open with no controls as of 9:00 a.m. Sunday. Kingsbury Grade is clear as is Hwy 89 on the West Shore.
Highway 89 at Luther Pass requires chains or snow tires. Hwy 89 at Emerald Bay, Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires on all wheels.

Prescribed burns start again Sunday around the South Shore
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/05/2016 - 10:45pmThe Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and U.S. Forest Service have scheduled prescribed fire operations around the South Shore from Spooner Summit to Meyers, weather and conditions permitting.
Starting Sunday, November 6, the agencies will start burning hand piles off Logan Creek Drive and on Kingsbury Grade on the East Shore, and on urban lots near Heavenly Mountain Resort and off North Upper Truckee Road on the South Shore.

The project will affect both South Lake Tahoe and Placerville, and those in-between so Caltrans is holding meetings to keep the public informed.
Amgen Women's Race returns to Lake Tahoe for two stages in 2017

The Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Women's Race will include the overall start and Stage 2 on consecutive days. The women’s competition will conclude with a third stage in Elk Grove, May 13 and the final in Sacramento, May 14.
The men's race is skipping Lake Tahoe this year and is set to begin in Sacramento on May 14.

$415 million for environmental restoration projects at Lake Tahoe in jeopardy

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in summer 2017.
South Tahoe High Vikings battle rival Truckee Friday night

Both teams are tied for second place in Northern Nevada Division 3A with a 7-1 record. The Vikings are on a six-game winning streak in their quest to take over the first place spot from Spring Creek.
The final regular season game for Varsity is at 7:00 p.m. with the Junior Varsity teams taking the field first at 4:30 p.m.
Arrive early as the tribute to the seniors will be right before the Varsity game begins.

Principal Holly Greenough said she wanted to thank John Marchini of South Tahoe Refuse and Steve and Mo Froyum for once again preparing and providing a "delicious lunch" for the hikers. Mo prepared burritos with all the fixings and snack bags for each student. John, Steve and two students, Carlos Lopez and Jaime Salas, carried the food 2 miles up to Cathedral Lake for everyone to enjoy.
NDOW releases Lake Tahoe bear back into the wild near Mt. Rose
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/10/2016 - 5:40pmNevada wildlife biologists released a three-plus year old male black bear back into the forest near the top of Mt. Rose Summit on Monday morning after capturing him Sunday in Incline Village at Lake Tahoe.
Nevada Department of Wildlife trapped the young bear while attempting to trap another bear that had caused damage to a building, according to wildlife biologist Carl Lackey. The bear that was captured and then later released Monday wasn't the bear Lackey was looking for.
Lackey says that NDOW had handled the released bear once before in the mountains east of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Study completed for proposed roundabout in Meyers at Hwy 50/89
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/07/2016 - 2:35pmA proposed 3-legged roundabout in Meyers at the intersection of Highway 89 and Highway 50 will not significantly affect the quality of the environment according to a report just released.
The Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is proposing the intersection improvements due to safety concerns for both cyclists and drivers. The purpose is to influence traffic calming with the implementation of a roundabout, something transportation officials say is needed because the intersection is experiencing a number of collisions related to the intersection type.

The utility relocation work on Highway 50 through South Lake Tahoe the past two years has made way for a major, three-year long Caltrans project that will get underway next Spring.
The project, which is currently out for bid, will be starting in 2017 and will have crews working along U.S. Highway 50 from the "Y" intersection with State Highway 89 to the Trout Creek Bridge once again.
Two-vehicle injury crash closes Highway 50 at Echo Summit
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/02/2016 - 6:40pm5:15 p.m. update 10/3/16: A Carson City resident was transported to Barton Hospital after her Ford Bronco drifted into the oncoming traffic and crashed into a Jeep Wrangler.
Stephanie Peterson of Carson City was heading west on US50 near milepost marker 67 with her infant son in the car. According to the California Highway Patrol's preliminary investigation, she was also operating her cellular phone as she headed up Echo Summit in snowy conditions. She made an unsafe turning movement and allowed her Bronco to drift.
Heading east at the time was Jonathan Chacon of Mammoth Lakes.
Firefighters killed in 1926 fire to be remembered in ceremony
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/27/2016 - 1:07pmIt was 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 28 in the year 1926. Fire had broken out at the Jack Smith Ranch at the base of Clear Creek Canyon above Carson City, Nev.
Flames were high, and the fire traveled up the canyon rapidly, getting ever so close to the source of timber for all of the state's mines at Glenbrook. The fire also burned several ranches. Strong winds fanned those flames, and caused the fire to reverse itself and come down Kings Canyon. Again, it reversed itself and raced up Kings Canyon one more.
Pavement grinding project on Highway 50 over Echo Summit
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/26/2016 - 5:33pmA grinding and paving project on more than nine miles of U.S. Highway 50 in the Sierra started today, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced.
The pavement rehabilitation project, designed to extend the life of the roadway and improve ride quality, is from Strawberry over Echo Summit to just west of Johnson Pass Road. Grinding and paving will take place around the clock Monday through 7 p.m. Thursday of this week and again Monday through Thursday of next week under one-way traffic control. Motorists should plan ahead and allow for additional travel time.
Driver's name released in fatal Kingsbury Grade crash

Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/23/2016 - 1:13pmKingsbury Grade was closed for several hours Friday after a collision between a motorhome and a Nissan Pathfinder sent several victims to area hospitals and resulted in the death of one of the drivers.
At 1:30 p.m., the two vehicles collided about 1.5 miles down from the summit on the valley side of the road. One person from each vehicle had to be extricated according to Fire Marshall Eric Guevin of Tahoe Douglas Fire Department.
Care Flight landed at the bottom of Kingsbury Grade to transport the victims.

SR28 construction schedule to change to meet October deadline
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/16/2016 - 8:39amCrews working on the SR28 Shared Use Path/Safety/Stormwater project in Incline Village will start a 24-hours-a-day schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 21, and then from Monday, Sept. 26 to Friday, Oct. 7.
The Nevada Department of Transportation has announced the updated late-September/early-October construction schedule to meet their original Phase 1 completion date of October 20.
Motorists should anticipate delays of up to 30 minutes with one-lane flagger controlled closures near Hidden Beach, one mile south of Incline Village. (During Phase 1, the average wait time has been 5-15 minutes.)
Senate Passes $415 million Lake Tahoe Restoration Act
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/15/2016 - 6:12pmMore money is headed to preserve and restore Lake Tahoe. In Washington Wednesday the U.S. Senate passed its $415 million version of 2015's Lake Tahoe Restoration Act by a vote of 95-3.
The money for Lake Tahoe is part of the $10 billion Water Resources Development Act of 2016.
This is the first time the funding legislation to reauthorize the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act has cleared the full Senate even though its has succeeded at the committee level several times.
Dusting of snow at higher elevations
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/13/2016 - 6:36amDuring a temporary halt to summer, snow fell on the upper elevations of the Sierra Nevada overnight. At Kirkwood, their Cornice Chair camera picked up the first sight of snow in months.
The base of Kirkwood is at 7800 ft, and the summit sits at 9800 ft and a dusting of snow could be seen Tuesday morning around the resort.
But, the wet and cold front is out of the Lake Tahoe Basin quickly and summer sets back in. The first day of Fall is September 22.

Some of the best developed climbing on the South Shore is on the numerous granite boulders scattered throughout the community of Meyers so it seems fitting that the 2016 Tahoe Bouldering Competition will take place there on September 17.
Former Bay Area residents and Touchstone employees Jen and Chris Bloch have taken on organizing the competition which was formerly known as the Meyers Climbing Festival.
There are new sponsors, more prizes and a large cash purse for winning participants. Also on tap are vendors, beer, food and much more.

Reid, who started the focus on Lake Tahoe along with President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore with the first Summit in 1997.

Reid went on with his World Series antidote and introduced the "All Star Lineup" at the 20th Summit, his last in office as he won't be seeking reelection after serving the state in Washington since 1987.

Two men who once served as America's chief executive visited Lake Tahoe and Nevada
in the late 1800s according to former Nevada State Archivist Guy Rocha. Both Ulysses S. Grant Rutherford B. Hayes were transported along the lake on the steamboat, Meteor.

Gates will open at Harvey’s Outdoor Arena at 11:30 a.m. and attendees are encouraged to arrive by 11:30 a.m. for the 1:30 p.m. event due to expected long lines and security check points.

And there is much to celebrate as lake clarity has improved; collaboration among agencies is strong and numerous restoration projects have been completed. But 20-20 hindsight also means that if only we had thought more about the impacts that focusing solely on the environment would have on our economy and community, we could have accomplished much more. Now, twenty years later, we find ourselves trying to play “catch up” on these other two areas.
South Lake Tahoe prepares for President Obama's visit

Helicopters could be seen over the South Shore Monday, and on the ground, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue worked with the Nevada National Air Guard Fire Department at the Lake Tahoe airport.

Expect delays as Caltrans starts three month project over Echo Summit

Crews will be setting up lane restrictions on the four-lane section of U.S. 50 in the Camino area and one-way traffic control on the two-lane stretch of highway over the summit. Motorists can expect up to 20-minute delays. These lane restrictions will continue through the end of November, weather permitting.
Headed to Shakespeare at Sand Harbor for final weekend? Expect delays

Construction has begun on Highway 28, and continues on Highway 50 around Cave Rock and on Spooner Summit. Lane closures are involved, so allow extra time to get to the the park which is located just south of Incline Village.

Fire west of Lake Tahoe held to 25 acres; Now 60% contained
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/06/2016 - 5:05pm7:20 p.m. update 8-7-16: Firefighters will soon be in clean up mode on the Alder Fire after they made good progress today. They strengthened lines today increasing the containment of the fire to 60 percent.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
9:00 a.m. update 8-7-16: Firefighters made good progress on the Alder Fire overnight and the fire is now 40 percent contained. The amount of brush and timber burned has been updated to 25 acres.
Accident closes Hwy 50 at Echo Summit
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/26/2016 - 4:23pmA three-car accident on Highway 50 near Frog Lake on lower Echo Summit caused both lanes of the road to be closed for almost two hours Tuesday afternoon.
At 3:37 p.m., the California Highway Patrol responded to the accident which resulted in extensive damage to all three cars involved in the head-on collision. They then issued an alert to cell phones in the area, warning of the road's closure.
CHP says there were mild to moderate injuries to the cars' occupants and at least one person was transported to Barton Hospital.
As of 5:15 p.m., both lanes of traffic reopened.
Water main breaks near Genoa, residents on precautionary boil water alert
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/25/2016 - 12:26pm3:30 p.m. update from Douglas County Officials: The water line has been located, but it is 15 feet deep with a gas line in the excavation hole and unmarked fiber optic lines running parallel to the edge of pavement along the old road bed. Therefore, efforts are currently limited to the use of a vactor truck for excavation.
The road crew is working with utilities on the excavation. It is anticipated that the crews will be working into the night to make the leak repair. Crockett Construction is onsite and they will be performing the excavation once fiber optics are located.
Community advocate named Tahoe Chamber Interim CEO
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/20/2016 - 3:38pmVeteran community advocate Steve Teshara has accepted the position of Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Board Chair Mike McLaughlin announced the Board’s appointment of Teshara in a statement released July 21.
“Our Board is extremely pleased Steve has agreed to step in to support the Chamber’s mission, membership, and community engagement while we seek a new CEO to move the organization into 2017 and beyond,” said McLaughlin. “Steve adds a unique blend of experiences and accomplishments to our dedicated Chamber staff.”
