Resort Triangle in North Lake Tahoe gets funding for new trails
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/08/2017 - 11:21pmThe Placer County Board of Supervisors have approved two chunks of money to go to their plans to transform North Lake Tahoe into a thriving, local community and, at the same time, provide visitors with a great experience.
Now halfway complete, the "Resort Triangle" will consist of a continuous 62-mile trail that runs from the Town of Truckee to Northstar, then to Kings Beach, to Tahoe City and back to Truckee.

Each year, more people die from suicide than war, homicide, and natural disasters combined.

Suicide Prevention: Working together to save a life

“For anyone who has lost a friend or loved one to suicide, this month can be especially hard,” said Laura Walny, manager with the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). “We hope that by supporting one another and working together to raise awareness about suicide, we can ultimately save lives.”
Slinkard Fire near Topaz Lake burns 9,061 acres and remains 20% contained

UPDATE 9/2 2:45PM - The Slinkard Fire is burning in three counties and two states: Mono, Alpine and Douglas County in California and Nevada. It has consumed 7,881 acres since starting by lightning on August 29. Firefighters now have a containment line around 20 percent of the fire. It is located in Slinkard Valley, and on the west slope of Antelope Valley, west of Topaz Lake and eight miles north of Walker, Calif.
Fire near town of Topaz closes highways, evacuations in place
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/30/2017 - 3:13pmUPDATE 8/31 10:00AM - The Slinkard Fire has grown to 5,000 acres with 0 percent containment this morning. The fire has burned to Hwy 395 and crossed Hwy 89 to the north.
Last night, fire crews focused on the eastern flank of the fire along Hwy 395 and engine crews were dedicated to structure protection in northern Topaz. There are no injuries and no structures lost at this time. Power is out in the immediate area.
City of South Lake Tahoe looks at temporary ban of marijuana sales

"We owe it to our community to make sure we take every measure to protect them," said SLT Mayor Austin Sass.

B&B, a non-profit, all volunteer organization, began feeding the needy of the Tahoe South Shore community in 1989 as a multi-denominational food outreach program. Throughout the past 28 years, volunteers of all faiths have supported the B&B program and Temple Bat Yam’s Adopt a Day of Nourishment dinner is a testament to the continuing support of all faiths in feeding the hungry of our community.
New fire east of Carson City burns over 1,100 acres
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/23/2017 - 6:22pmThe Lyons Fire burning 15 miles east of Carson City has now consumed 1,128 acres since lightning started it Tuesday afternoon.
68 firefighters are on the scene of the fire which is on the east side of the Pine Nut Mountain Range.
There is no containment at this time.
Update on other area fires:
The Voltaire Fire behind Fandango in Carson City is now fully contained, but not after burning 135 acres and causes some evacuations. That fire was also started by lightning on Tuesday afternoon.
Four brothers arrested for string of high-end bicycle thefts in Truckee
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/22/2017 - 5:08pmFour brothers from San Francisco have been arrested in connection with the theft of an estimated $125,000 worth high-end mountain bikes from Truckee.
Starting in June, 2017, the Truckee Police Department began receiving theft reports of high-end mountain bikes from various locations in Truckee. The most common scenario happened with bikes on vehicle racks that were secured with the locking mechanism of the rack or a cable style lock.
On heels of Tahoe Summit, grant given to TRPA to monitor wetlands
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/22/2017 - 3:55pmThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $197,250 to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) to assess and restore wetlands in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Today’s announcement coincided with the 21st annual Lake Tahoe Summit in South Lake Tahoe.
TRPA will use the grant to develop a regional plan for monitoring changes in wetlands over time, prioritizing wetland restoration efforts and establishing goals for successful wetland projects.
Brush fire burning in canyon behind Fandango Casino in Carson City
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/22/2017 - 1:40pmUPDATE 6:29PM: Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said conditions are looking better this evening, with the fire around 70 to 75 percent contained. There is not acreage estimate yet but it is likely around 100 acres and probably less than 200 acres, he said.
“Around 100 firefighters are on scene battling the blaze as well as two airplanes and two helicopters. We have released some resources now so they can go to other fires in the region.”
Evacuations remain in place for now in Voltaire Canyon and Carson Colony areas. The cause of the fire is believed to be a lightning strike.

Fallen Leaf Lake Fire added to CalTahoe JPA
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/21/2017 - 7:17pmFor years the Fallen Leaf Lake Fire Department (FLLF) has wanted to join the South Lake Tahoe and Lake Valley fire departments and be part of the California Tahoe Emergency Services Operations Authority (CTESOA), and today they finally got their wish.
During Monday's meeting of CTESOA, also known as the CalTahoe JPA, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to add FLFF, giving them an ALS to be stationed at Fallen Leaf Lake as well as a possible voting spot on the board. (ALS-Advanced Life Support)

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is holding their annual fundraiser, Homebrew for the Homeless, on Saturday, September 23 at the DDRC in Minden, Nevada from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
This is a family-friendly event, presented in collaboration with Hops Envy, and will feature live music, a homebrew beer competition, Poker Run, chili cook-off as well as horseback rides, face painting lawn games and bounce house for children. There will also be food and non-alcoholic beverages. There will also be a silent auction.
Residents forced to evacuate as fire in Yosemite grows

Mandatory evacuations will remain in place in Wawona for the area east of Highway 41 on Forest Dr. and Chilnualna Falls Rd.

Who would have known a horseshoe game at TJ’s Peanut Farm (now known as Steamer’s Bar and Grill) in 1977 would so greatly impact a community? It was this game that raised the first dollar to fund an organization that would go on to help thousands of South Lake Tahoe community members affected by domestic violence, including more than 1,000 last year.
As Live Violence Free (LVF,) formerly the SLT Women’s Center, celebrates 40 years of serving the community with its annual Sunset Gala on Sept. 15, board members, staff and volunteers are honoring their predecessors.

I’ve heard it said by someone not so long ago…. “The more people I meet, the more I love dogs!” We at the police department understand and share in this fondness; however, we receive weekly complaints from community members regarding dogs in public parks, and most frequently dogs at the Live-at-Lakeview events. The South Lake Tahoe City Code (SLTCC), does not allow dogs, even on a leash, to be in our public parks (SLTCC §8.05.130).

NHP and MADD team up to keep Nevada highways safe

The partnership will combine the NHPA's goal of continued safety on Nevada's highways and MADD's goals to end drunk and drugged driving, support victims of drunk driving, and bring an end to underage drinking.
Douglas County narrows search down to two for Asst. County Manager position

The public is invited to meet the two on August 21 from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. at the Carson Valley Inn.
Last Monday, panel interviews were conducted for eight applicants, and from that group Hurley and Ritger were chosen to be interviewed by County Manager Larry Werner.
Ritger is the current Town of Genoa Manager and Hurley the Deputy Communications Officer with the Department of Defense. Both are residents of Douglas County.

It's a Hootenanny, complete with music by the Redneck Quartet, local beer tasting, food and fun, all put on by the South Lake Tahoe Rotary club on Saturday, August 19 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Golf Course.
Tickets or those over 21 are $45 if bought ahead of the event, $50 at the door and include unlimited beer tasting and food. Kids 6 and under are free, and designated drivers and those ages 7-20 are $20.
Besides food, drink and dancing there will be face painting and family games.

A portion of all sales goes back to the League to Save Lake Tahoe to "Keep Tahoe Blue" and in a new campaign, Tahoe Blue Vodka will batch all donations to the agency tasked with protecting the lake through education, legislation, volunteer training and other efforts.

Carol had never been on snowshoes before, or hiked at night, but when she heard her surgeon and other patients at a similar stage of recovery would be there, she decided to try it out.

The event raised over $2,500 to support Postpartum Support International, an organization that provides support to families and education to mental health providers. Paul was born in Oakland, CA on November 24, 1933 to Arnaldo and Ruth (Dobbins) D'Anneo. He married Barbara Moore in Berkeley, CA. Having attended Cal Poly, he worked as an electronics engineer.
North Lake Tahoe Resort Association gets $1.78M from Placer County

Of the contract, $1,728,262 will fund NLTRA marketing and visitor services, with $16,104 earmarked for NLTRA’s participation in regional transportation planning efforts and $33,129 for their support in developing a capital projects partnership to complete goals in the Tourism Master Plan.
Report: Lake Tahoe is getting warmer, trees are dying and algae is increasing

These and other findings were released today in the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) annual Tahoe: State of the Lake Report for 2016. The year was marked by the hottest temperatures on record followed by a winter of unprecedented levels of rain and snow in the Sierra Nevada.
TERC Director Geoffrey Schladow presented the report at a free public talk July 27 in Incline Village.

It is an unbearable and eye opening statistic, and the Suicide Prevention Network is trying to change that number by offering education and awareness in Douglas and El Dorado Counties, and surrounding communities.
Douglas County declared disaster area after Preacher Fire scorches 4,651 acres
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/25/2017 - 6:08pmDouglas County Board of Commissioners signed a Disaster Declaration today due to the lightning caused Preacher Fire which is burning seven miles southeast of Gardnerville.
The fire is currently estimated at 4,651 acres as of 6:00 p.m. on July 25. It is being managed at this time by Sierra Front Type 3 Incident Management Team (IMT) with support from East Fork Fire Protection District and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Tahoe Youth and Family Services started “The Girl’s Project” in 2010 with the vision to empower high risk young girls in our community to become more confident and influential women later in life. The Girl’s Project originally began in three of our local elementary schools, Tahoe Valley Elementary, Sierra House Elementary and Bijou Elementary and has now expanded and includes the South Tahoe Middle School.
Douglas County narrows down group of applicants for Asst. County Manager job

If you have never been, this should be the year. Sit in the sand and enjoy not only great productions on the Warren Edward Trepp Stage at water's edge, but also an eclectic food and beverage area (or bring your own).
Two shows will be on the stage, alternating nights, Tuesday-Sunday through August 27.

As the Chief Probation Officer in El Dorado County, I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on the critical work probation does in our criminal justice system and say thank you to all the men and women of my department who work tirelessly to protect our communities, reduce recidivism, restore victims, promote healthy families, and live the vision of our department: Safe Communities Through Changed Lives.
Public has opportunity to comment on new Lake Tahoe Shoreline Plan
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/21/2017 - 7:35amAn updated plan for the 72 miles of Lake Tahoe shoreline is in the works, one that could enhance recreation while also bringing more piers and buoys to the lake. Stakeholders have been working collaboratively in developing solutions to both manage natural resources while improving access to the lake for recreational purposes.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, (TRPA) is asking for public comment as they go through the process of preparing a draft environmental impact statement for the proposed Lake Tahoe Shoreline Plan.
