You Knew Me When Bring Their Craft Brewed Compositions to Alibi Ale Works on April 27th

Event Date:
April 27, 2016 - 6:00pm

As the number of craft breweries continues to rise throughout the country, so does the number of breweries that are choosing to host live music. No band knows this better than the one time Nashville based indie folk-rock duo You Knew Me When. After uprooting from their Nashville home and full-time jobs in June of 2012 the husband and wife indie folk-rock duo set plans to tour the nation for a full year…however, they never stopped.

Dr. Kelly Shanahan retiring after 22 years in South Lake Tahoe

"It was a sign that I need to retire," said Dr. Kelly Shanahan.

Shanahan sat down with me recently, to reflect on her 22 years in South Lake Tahoe, and the almost 10,000 babies she's delivered in her career.

The sign?

Without putting her office up for sale she received a phone call from a local realtor, asking if she'd like to sell the building that houses her Emerald Bay Center for Women's Health.

The potential buyer came to look at the property, and shortly after, a vacationing doctor called to see if she'd like to sell her practice.

Lake Tahoe lecture: Garden Planting for Native Bees & Butterflies

Event Date:
April 7, 2016 - 5:30pm

Enlightened gardeners realize that it is not enough for a garden to be just beautiful. Gardens must also attract crucial pollinators and conserve water. Gone are the days of lush, green, thirsty lawns. We can replace turf with species that are well adapted to the local climate, save water, reduce runoff, and support wild creatures in the face of habitat loss and climate change. Learn how to support the local ecosystem and insect pollinators like native bees and butterflies, too, at the next UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) lecture on April 7, 2016.

Spring events on the historic V & T Railroad

The historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad (V & T) is the most famous of all American Short Line railroads and dubbed the "Queen of the Short Line." Even though construction began on the original tracks and train in 1869, people can still enjoy riding the old steam and diesel trains from Carson City to Virginia City, Nevada.

Firestorm surrounding ambulance service in South Lake Tahoe

In the mix you have El Dorado County, the City of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Valley Fire Protection and the Cal Tahoe JPA. More importantly, and most likely the reason for the passionate responses from all involved, the mix also contains the safety of the public.

On March 15, 2016, the City of South Lake Tahoe sent a letter to the JPA, stating their intent to pull out of the agency that was created in 2001 to supply ambulance service to the City and the County and a portion of Alpine County.

Column: Active Transportation Plan adopted for Tahoe

Conservancy Board awards $7 million in Proposition 1 grants

On Thursday, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board awarded more than $7 million for seven watershed restoration and forest health projects around the lake. Thirteen different applicants submitted 32 grant requests totaling $30 million, but with just $13,950,000 to give out, it was a very competitive process.

The money comes from Proposition 1, the $7.545 billion water bond approved overwhelmingly by California voters in November 2014. It was divided around the state to agencies like the Conservancy for water supply infrastructure projects.

Opinion: Be informed on the US50 revitalizaton project plan

Rarely do I use this space to comment upon political issues within our community. That said, with the “politicization” of the US Hwy 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project I felt the need to share some background and perspectives for consideration.

Strength and Conditioning room and program to be added at South Tahoe High

The very popular Sports Medicine program at South Tahoe High School just got a new counterpart, a Strength and Conditioning program and center. While Sports Med teaches students how to help athletes after injuries occur, the strength and conditioning program will teach students how to train in a way to prevent injuries.

At Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board meeting, the board voted 4-1 to add the Strength & Conditioning center with accompanying classes at STHS.

"Frosty-5-0" team formed in Douglas County for Polar Bear Plunge

The Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday, March 19 just got safer with the addition of a team made up of Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies and Explorer Scouts. Dubbed Frosty 5-0, the group will be swimming in the annual event for Northern Nevada Special Olympics at Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe starting at 9:00 a.m.

Opinion: Future of South Shore’s revitalization on the line

The South Shore of Lake Tahoe is divided by lines. These state, county, and city lines work well on a map, but they do not define the day-to-day reality of the people who live and work in this community. In the last decade we have seen definitive projects reshape South Shore – Heavenly Village, Lakeview Commons, Harrison Avenue Streetscape. We have seen new bike trails and the opening of a bi-state park.

New water lines and fire hydrants in place to fight Lake Tahoe wildfires

Over the past eight building seasons, a bi-state collaborative effort of the South Tahoe Public Utility District, U.S. Forest Service and the other area water agencies has enhanced the Lake Tahoe Basin's water infrastructure to better fight wildfires.

Pet of the Week: Pepper

Pepper is a super sweet 18-month-old who loves children and babies. She walks nicely on leash and loves to play with other dogs. She also does well keeping the cats and squirrels out of the yard so she does need to be in a cat free home.

Please come visit sweet little Pepper at The El Dorado County Animal Services, 530-573-7925.

Opinion: Investing in Tahoe’s Environment

At Lake Tahoe, we know our natural resources are one of our most valuable assets, and that’s why we have worked for decades to conserve and restore them. The natural wonders of the Jewel of the Sierra and the opportunities they afford are why we live here, and why millions of visitors travel here to enjoy the Tahoe Basin each year.

Motel and surrounding property could be demolished to make way for new project

The Knights Inn could be purchased by the City of South Lake Tahoe for $6 million should a grant be awarded them by the California Tahoe Conservancy. Opinion: Everyone has a role in ending adolescent dating abuse

With the ever-changing and rapidly evolving technology around us, dating practices and expectations have changed. Nowadays, there are a myriad of communication mediums to balance including texting, sharing photos and videos, various social media apps, and actual face-to-face interactions. As a result, adolescents have adopted these enhanced dating expectations which shift signs of care and affection away from traditional Friday night movie date to a constant stream of selfies, texts, emojis, and virtual relationship statuses. Teen Dating Violence (TDV) is growing as fast as technology.
