Spring events on the historic V & T Railroad

The historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad (V & T) is the most famous of all American Short Line railroads and dubbed the "Queen of the Short Line." Even though construction began on the original tracks and train in 1869, people can still enjoy riding the old steam and diesel trains from Carson City to Virginia City, Nevada.

For 74 years, the busy mountain railroad hauled millions of dollars in gold and silver ore from the mines deep below Virginia City. As many as 45 trains a day departed from Virginia City for Gold Hill, Silver City, Carson City and Reno where trains such as the “Lighting Express” connected with the newly constructed transcontinental railroad. The V & T was later extended to Minden, Nevada.

All summer long there are train rides, but here are some special events coming up:

Carson Tahoe Auxiliary Fundraiser, April 16

Ride the V&T for a good cause! Support the Carson Tahoe Auxiliary on April 16th with a special ride on the V&T Railroad. Sample wine, cheese and crackers as you make your way to the historic Virginia City for shopping and lunch. Finish off your adventure with wine and desert on your return trip. You'll have a chance to win prizes, too! Tickets are $65/person, all inclusive. All proceeds benefit the Carson Tahoe Auxiliary. "Pops Plays Pipers,” a fundraiser for the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra, April 30

The Carson Valley Pops Orchestra presents an exclusive opportunity to ride the historic Virginia & Truckee Railway to experience live music and dining at the iconic Piper’s Opera House, April 30. (www.cvpops.org) Patrons will witness some of the most talented musicians in the Carson Valley as 35 to 40 Orchestra members take the stage for this special occasion. Guests will travel on the V&T and arrive in Virginia City at 11:30 a.m. for a catered buffet lunch at Piper’s, followed by the concert at 2 p.m. Featured ensembles include “Oklahoma,” the Bonanza theme song, “Home Means Nevada,” “The Magnificent Seven” theme song and “The Great Locomotive Chase,” among others. Season Opening 2016

Memorial Weekend • May 28th-29th, 2016 • Steam Train Rides

The season's first steam train officially departs from the Carson City Depot at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 28 and again the following morning. Arrive early for live music, mimosas and free face painting for children, then enjoy a relaxing and scenic ride to Virginia City, where dining, shopping and Old West history abound. Tickets Here.
