One of the swimmers, a 25-year-old man from Fairfield, Calif., had been underwater for almost two-and-a-half minutes before being pulled from the water.

Growing up in Ventura, he surfed, sailed, played water polo for the Ventura High Cougars, and was one of the best swimmers Ventura High had ever seen, getting his varsity letter and pin as a sophomore and setting swimming records that stood for many years after he graduated in 1969. That Jim had a love of the beach, sailing, and everything that had to do with the water was obvious to everyone around him.

Body of Gilroy man located in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/27/2020 - 8:57am4:30 p.m. UPDTE: The body of the missing Gilroy man was located this afternoon in 117 feet of water off the shore of Lake Tahoe.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's dive team with their remote operating vehicle (ROV) found 25-year-old Ian Morlang. He was brought up to the surface and placed on the South Lake Tahoe Police Marine 1 boat, then taken to the Tahoe Keys Marina.
Police officers draped a flag on Morlang as he was carried into a waiting vehicle.
Next of kin has been notified.
The coroner transported the body to the morgue in Placerville.

Deputies aboard the boat were patrolling just northwest of the Thunderbird Lodge on the east shore when they spotted a number of items, including paddles and shoes, floating on the lake.

South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler says goodbye; March retirement date set

Chief Brian Uhler will be wrapping up a 40-year career in law enforcement when he retires from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on March 12, 2020. He has been the second-longest serving chief, coming within a couple of months of the City's second police chief, John Crow.
Heartbreaking end after police pull drowning dog out of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/27/2020 - 10:00amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On just after 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a call of a dog that was hit by a vehicle near the 3400 block of Lake Tahoe Boulevard.
Lobo, a large Siberian Husky, was accidentally let out of a hotel complex while the family was away. Witnesses tried to render aid at the scene but Lobo panicked, bit them and ran off.
New hotel coming to South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/17/2020 - 11:55amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The old Super 8 motel on Lake Tahoe Boulevard and adjacent Lotus Pho restaurant in South Lake Tahoe are currently closed as pre-construction activities have begun on a four-story 120-unit Hampton Inn and Suites.
The asbestos abatement has been completed as have the pre-demolition permits and the current two-story building is set for demolition soon. Once that happens, crews will be waiting for the May 1 grading date to get started on what is promised to be a "facelift to the area."

On August 21 it came to the attention of authorities that the owner of a dog said his pet died after swimming in water behind the Tallac Historic Site on Kiva Beach in South Lake Tahoe. Even though there was no evidence of toxic blue-green algae, Lahontan Regional Water Quality Board took samples and submitted them for testing.
El Dorado Hills man dies while swimming in Lake Tahoe Triathlon

Mark Combs called out for help from the water at 8:23 a.m., according to Sgt. Anthony Prencipe, public information officer with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO).. Rescue swimmers on personal watercraft responded to the location and retrieved Mark from underwater. Lifesaving attempts were made by emergency personal and Mark was later pronounced deceased according to Prencipe.
Toxic algae tests underway on samples from South Lake Tahoe beach

The death of the dog came to the attention of Lahontan Regional Water Quality Board late Wednesday, August 21. The following day they were joined by the El Dorado County Environmental Health Department along the stretch of beach the dog's owner said they were at the previous Sunday. They spoke with the owner and retraced their steps that day.

"It is with great sadness we announce the death of Correctional Officer Andreiam Jeffrey “AJ” Arqueza. AJ passed yesterday afternoon in a drowning accident while enjoying days off with friends in the Lake Tahoe area," said the San Mateo County Code 30 Foundation on a Facebook post.
Good Samaritans help first responders save drowning man at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/13/2019 - 10:26pmINCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The extraordinary efforts of several Good Samaritans and deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office helped save the life of a man near Thunderbird Beach at Lake Tahoe July 5.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., deputies aboard Marine 9 were informed of a drowning that had just occurred on the small beach just north of the historic lodge. As the boat arrived two minutes later, deputies observed Erin Dohlman of Des Moines, Iowa, administering CPR to a male adult laying on the beach.
USA Swimming Pacific Region Swim Meet in South Lake Tahoe

Participants are ages 5-17 and admission to the meet at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center is free.
The meet takes place Friday - Sunday. On Friday, things start at 3:00 p.m. with the day-long action Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The Tahoe Swim Club organizes the event.
Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care's new facility taking shape

When completed it will feature one rehabilitation center and 12 cages/buildings.
By October, seven of those cages will be completed and LTWC will celebrate with a grand opening.

Lake Tahoe canoers stranded 3/4 mile off shore after boat takes on water
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/03/2019 - 7:40pm6/4/19 4:00PM Update: Details have been updated in Monday evening's incident on Lake Tahoe. The two people were in a canoe that took on water for unknown reasons about 3/4 of a mile off the shore of South Lake Tahoe. They ended up in the water and were there for about ten minutes before a local boater got to them and pulled them out of the water. The Nevada Department of Wildlife had a boat on the water that reached the group, followed by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) boat. SLTPD got the pair off the local boater's boat and returned them to El Dorado Beach.
Water safety Instructor and Lifeguard classes to begin soon in South Lake Tahoe

The approved the California Tahoe Conservancy Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan (Plan) authorizes staff to take all actions necessary to carry out the barrier removals at five of their sites on the California side of Lake Tahoe:

• North Tahoe Beach (7860 North Lake Blvd., Kings Beach);

Multiple agencies responded to the 5:36 p.m. call for help and a possible drowning on the lake near Nevada Beach including the Coast Guard, Tahoe Douglas Fire Department, South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, El Dorado County Sheriff (EDSO) and Douglas County Sheriff's Offices (DCSO).
Lost in Tahoe: Dog lost at Sugar Pine Point
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 08/31/2018 - 6:04amOur dog Trippy was lost at Sugar Pine Point State Park on Friday, August 24 and we're asking for the public's help in finding him.
We were boating and anchored in front of the park. At sunset Trippy jumped in the water to swim to shore, something he normally does. He usually swims right back but must have been confused and ran inland.
He is chipped but did not have his collar on. He is a Miniature Schnauzer and responds to the name Tripp/Trippy. He is about 20lb, 12-years-old (but appears younger).
15-year-old completes 21.3-mile swim across Lake Tahoe

Bay Area teen to swim 21.3 miles across Lake Tahoe

She'll be swimming 21.3 miles across Lake Tahoe.
The 15-year-old Bay Area resident is after the California Triple Crown of Marathon Swimming, and when she gets out of the water Saturday morning she'll be the youngest person to do so. Only ten people have completed the Triple Crown, the youngest of that group being a 38-year-old man.
Swimmer rescued after getting leg stuck between rocks in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/15/2018 - 8:42pmA teenager staying in South Lake Tahoe was rescued by emergency personnel on Lake Tahoe Wednesday after getting her leg stuck between boulders while swimming near Skunk Harbor, a popular area on the East Shore.
Tahoe Douglas Fire's Marine 24 assisted North Lake Tahoe Fire and Sand Harbor lifeguards in the rescue. An off-duty Reno firefighter was the first to reach the girl, according to Eric Guevin, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District's fire marshal.
The firefighter could not get the girl free by himself and called for help. The girl's head was always above water.
USFS holds grand opening of the new Round Hill Pines Beach Resort

Steph Curry loses bet, jumps into Lake Tahoe

But this time is wasn't Dell Curry.
Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry enjoyed it in 2017 when his dad, former NBA player Dell Curry, jumped into Lake Tahoe after losing a head-to-head bet in the tournament.
This year, it was dad Dell who got the last laugh.
Two-person police team protecting South Lake Tahoe waters

As they navigate Lake Tahoe they are looking for speeders, unsafe practices, life vests, drunk boaters and boat registrations, as well as responding to life threatening crashes and drownings.
"It's our little city out here," explained Steve O'Brien who has manned the South Lake Tahoe police boat for 17 summers.

It offers a full array of activities including swimming, stand-up paddle, fishing ,picnicking, trail walking, and a playground. Last year pickle ball courts were added and they now draw players regularly.
On the other hand, the tennis court is rarely used.
I would like to see this changed and am inviting tennis players to contact me to set up friendly matches or just to hit. All players regardless of experience or ability are invited.

Bird in South Lake Tahoe tests positive for West Nile Virus
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/22/2018 - 8:15pmThe first El Dorado County case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in South Lake Tahoe. County health officials received confirmation this week that a Stellar Jay found on May 7 has tested positive for the virus.
This bird was the first one for the county in 2018. Besides El Dorado COunty, West Nile virus activity in dead birds has been reported in two other California counties, San Mateo and Santa Clara.
Dirk Brazil ready to take on interim city manager role for South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/20/2018 - 5:39pmRecently retired from the City of Davis, Dirk Brazil has been selected to become the City of South Lake Tahoe's interim city manager starting June 5.
Even though he doesn't start officially until next month, Brazil has been in town meeting with various stakeholders and getting to know the city.
He said a lot of things in a city are the same, departments and their functions are similar, but each one has its own issues.
Off-duty firefighters save life of man who fell off kayak in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/15/2018 - 11:15amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 22-year-old South Lake Tahoe man is alive today thanks to efforts of rescuers who were on the beach of Tahoe Beach Retreat on Thursday, May 10, when he went underwater after being on a kayak.
At 2:46 p.m., a call was made to 911 about a drowning man in the lake. When the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department arrived three minutes later, two off-duty firemen were on the scene already, along with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
