SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - From his birthplace in Hungary in 1920 to the slopes of Heavenly Mountain Resort, Martin Hollay has been both an inspiration and a legend. On Friday, November 1, Hollay turns 99 and there will be a party in his honor in South Lake Tahoe.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $5.2 million project to upgrade metal beam guardrail and construct concrete barriers at 89 locations from the Red Hawk Undercrossing to 1.9 miles west of the junction with State Route 89 in Meyers. Completion is expected this fall or spring 2020.

NOAA - Absence of El Nino and La Nina this winter; Drier and warmer than normal

There are many things that help those living in Lake Tahoe predict what winter will be like: Has the snow in the cross of Mt. Tallac melted? What does the Farmer's Almanac say? Are the squirrels fatter? Is NOAA going to be right in their three-month forecast?

There is no app to give one the perfect insight into what winter has in store and most weather can only be predicted a week out. For generations, people have relied on signs from Mother Nature.

Prescribed fire operations at four locations in Lake Tahoe Basin, weather permitting

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and California State Parks may continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in the Tahoe Basin, if weather and conditions permit.

Caples Fire has burned 2,949 acres and is 53 percent contained

10.15.19 7:00 p.m. UPDATE: Tuesday was a productive day for firefighters. The northern ridge and southwestern corner are now contained and being patrolled. The containment lines on the eastern and southwestern sides of the fire containment lines are in progress. The hand line on the south side was extended farther northeast towards Castle Point by crews using tactical firing operations. Stronger winds from the southwest are expected late Wednesday afternoon and evening with light precipitation expected Thursday morning.

Power out to parts of Lake Tahoe's north and west shores

1:45 p.m. Update - Power has been restored for all customers in North Lake Tahoe.

12:45 p.m. Update - A tree has been found in the primary source line and the backup line is currently being inspected by helicopter. Liberty Utilities has an estimated restoration time of 3:00 p.m. for the over 80 customers affected.

11:40 a.m. Update - Due to fire risk, Liberty Utilities crews must inspect the entire line before energizing the backup power source. The good news is they have commissioned a helicopter to expedite this process and there will have eyes in the air soon.

Power outage in the Upper Truckee Road area; Crews on the way

12:00 a.m. update: According to Liberty Utilities they are working to restore power to those in the North and South Upper Truckee area of Meyers. At this time they expect to have power restored between 2:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. but it may be up to six hours, according to the California Highway Patrol.

North Upper Truckee Road is closed in the area of the downed pole.

The condition of the driver is unknown at this time.

MEYERS, Calif. - There are reports of a power outage near the Upper Truckee Road area of Meyers Sunday night.

Lake Tahoe and Sierra roadwork for August 25 - 31

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are still almost two months left of scheduled roadwork around the Lake Tahoe Basin before winter hiatus. Most traffic-interfering work will be limited from 6:00 a.m. August 30 through 8:00 p.m. September 3 for Labor Day weekend. Exceptions may be granted depending on the work and route.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Motorists can expect intermittent short delays on State Route 89 at Sugar Pine Point State Park in Tahoma from 6:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 24 and from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, August 25 due to the Lake Tahoe Triathlon.

South Lake Tahoe single-car crash takes out tree, sends one to Barton

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One man was transported to Barton Hospital after a single-car crash at the "Y" Friday evening.

The driver said he was experiencing a panic attack as he was stopped at the intersection of Highway 50 and Emerald Bay Road, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Jason Cheney. The driver was heading west on the highway and waiting to turn south onto Emerald Bay Road.

High winds, low relative humidity, and dry vegetation are a dangerous combination. When dangerous fire weather is forecasted, the National Weather Service may issue a Red Flag Warning.

6:15 p.m. update: Power has been restored to all but a couple of customers. Those remaining two will have their power back up by 8:30 p.m.

STATELINE, Nev. - NV Energy is reporting 2,439 of their customers in the Kingsbury Grade/Stateline area are without power this afternoon.

A tree fell on a power line and crews are at the scene.

They estimate power will be restored by 6:30 p.m.

No other information is available at this time.

Throughout the month of May, donation boxes that had been decorated by our local Boys and Girls Club members were located throughout the community. Free food for South Lake Tahoe youth all summer with Bread & Broth 4 Kids program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the third consecutive summer, the St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will provide weekly food bags for South Lake Tahoe youth until school resumes in August. During the school year more than 2,000 local students receive free or reduced cost meals at breakfast and lunch, but that program doesn't cover weekends or summers and that is where Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) comes in. In the 2018-19 school year, BB4K supplied over 180 bags of food each Friday to local youth and last summer 225 bags of food were given away each week.

5th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon this weekend; Lane closure announced

Over 1,800 runners will be participating in this weekend's 5th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon. The race, presented by Epic Tahoe Adventures (ETA), sends the runners past the spectacular scenery of many of Tahoe’s east and south shore treasures including Glenbrook, Logan Shoals, Cave Rock, Round Hill Pines, Nevada Beach, and Rabe Meadow. They wind down over 1,000 feet from Spooner Summit to the finish line at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.

NV Energy and Liberty Utilities outline wildfire mitigation plans for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With electrical transmission lines found to be at fault in recent California fires, agencies responsible for supplying electricity to communities have been creating plans to prevent fires in the future.

Both companies that supply power to Lake Tahoe, NV Energy and Liberty Utilities, have announced new mitigation efforts to reduce the risk of fire.

Search teams from Placer and El Dorado County Sheriff's offices search for men missing in area rivers

The Placer County Sheriff's Office was called to the American River Confluence Tuesday evening just before 5:00 p.m. on a report of a young man hanging from a tree, yelling for help. One of their deputies saw the unidentified man going down the river but lost sight of him. The Placer Sheriff helicopter was called in to aid in the search but they could not locate the missing man. The search was called off due to darkness.

The American River Confluence is in Auburn.

Emerald Bay boulder incident draws $50,000 fine for contractor and Caltrans

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All involved parties reached a settlement today concerning the May 2018 boulder rolling incident at Emerald Bay. At that time, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) received a complaint about the contractors hired to build a retaining wall at Emerald Bay on SR89. In that complaint, a video was provided that showed equipment pushing a large boulder over the edge of the road as crews cheered. As the boulder rolled it took out or damaged several trees, including a majestic Sugar Pine.

USFS fuelwood permits go on sale in Lake Tahoe June 3

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the sale of personal use fuelwood permits at the Forest Supervisor’s Office in South Lake Tahoe on Monday, June 3, 2019. Permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.

Permits have specific conditions and complete information is provided when the permit is issued. Maps to designated cutting areas are provided and must be in the permit holder’s possession along with the valid permit when cutting.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will continue a project to eradicate, control, and contain known infestations of invasive plants in the Lake Tahoe Basin using chemical treatment. Work will take place at approximately 90 infestations sites (105 acres) beginning in late May and continuing through September 2019.

The following is the second in a series of stories on being a community that is prepared for wildfire.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Vegetation fires are natural and were normal before policies were created to suppress them for fear of uncontrollable and destructive wildfires as seen in the late 1800s. When some of the first residents arrived in Lake Tahoe between the Gold Rush and Silver Strike, it was common to see just six-seven Jeffrey Pines per acre. Trees in the Tahoe Basin were clear cut to provide the lumber for building mines under Virginia City.

WEATHER – Greater Lake Tahoe Area:

Friday: Partly cloudy. Highs 61 to 71. Light winds becoming southwest around 10 mph with gusts up to 30 mph in the afternoon.

Laser measurement of Sierra snowpack from the air being considered in Sacramento

At a price tag of $150 million, the California legislature is considering a bill that, if approved, would change the way the Sierra snowpack is measured each year.

For 90 years the snowpack has been measured at several locations including Phillips, just west of Lake Tahoe. Normally performed in front of media, staff from the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) snowshoe into a spot where they stick a pole into the snow to measure the depth and water content of the snow.

One arrested for DUI in South Lake Tahoe rollover crash

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two local 17-year-olds were in a single-car rollover crash in South Lake Tahoe Friday night, resulting in the driver being arrested for a suspected DUI.

On April 5 at 10:44 p.m., the South Lake Tahoe police and fire departments were called out to Glenwood Way on a call of an overturned vehicle. Upon arrival they found a Chevy resting on its roof in the front yard of a home on Glenwood Way near the intersection with Janet Drive. '

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Major Caltrans roadwork projects around Lake Tahoe will not start until at least May 1, and in the case of the $35M Tahoe City project, until mid-June due to the height of the Truckee River. In the meantime, there will be short-term projects.

SHORT-TERM PROJECTS

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) at the Weber Creek Bridge: Motorists can expect intermittent one-way traffic control from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday for guardrail replacement work.

Douglas County looking at automatic sprinkler ordinance at commissioner meeting

STATELINE, Nev. - The Douglas County Commissioners will be considering the adoption of a new fire code which would require the installation of automatic fire sprinklers on new construction of homes less than 5,000 square feet. Their approval would acknowledge that benefits outweigh the cost to homeowners.

The meeting in Minden, which starts at 1:00 p.m., is normally fed live through the internet but as of 10:00 a.m. there were some technical difficulties and it may not be shown online.
