Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe awards $25,003 to local programs benefiting youth

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) awarded $25,003 towards programs in the local community that benefit youth during a luncheon on Wednesday, March 14.

The following presenters gave a brief description of the program on how the funds that were awarded would be used.

Learn how to grow onions and garlic at UCD class in Lake Tahoe

Join Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners and UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) on September 25 as they delve into the tricks of the trade in growing garlic and onions in high altitude.

These varieties are specifically chosen to survive tough Tahoe winters and provide a hearty spring harvest. Topics include proper varietal selection, location in the garden or container, planting options, and methods for protecting the young plants.

Plastic, light and sound pollution focus of movie screening in Lake Tahoe

Light and sound affect people and wildlife. Find out more when the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science hosts the next TERC talk and movie screening in Lake Tahoe on Thursday, July 13 at 5:30 p.m.

"The Smog of the Sea" will be shown. It is a short film that chronicles a one-week journey through the remote waters of the Sargasso Sea to assess the fate of plastics in the world's oceans. As the crew sieves the water they find a fog of microplastics permeating the world's oceans.

UCD lecture at Incline: Political Polarization and Policymaking

Aggravated Divisions: Political Polarization and Policymaking after the 2016 Election with Dr. Christopher Hare from the UC Davis Department of Political Science is the next topic at the Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) lecture in Incline Village on February 2 at 5:30 p.m.

UCD lecture at Incline: Climate change and lake temperature in the Sierra Nevada

While climate can be an important factor controlling lake temperatures, in many lakes, water temperatures are responding differently than air temperatures. Through decades of climate and water temperature data from Sierra Nevada, Dr. Steve Sadro was able to illustrate the magnitude of warming taking place and demonstrate the role of winter snow-pack in regulating lake temperatures. Sadro and his findings will be featured at the next UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) discussion on February 9. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. with refreshments and no-host bar from 5:30 p.m.

University Center at LTCC ready to break ground in Spring of 2017

Long the dream of many in South Lake Tahoe, a four-year educational opportunity is on target to break ground in the spring of 2017 on the grounds of Lake Tahoe Community College. The Lisa and Robert Maloff University Center will then be built and open in the fall of 2018.

Golfers to play dawn to dusk at Tahoe Paradise course for charity

The 10th Annual Longest Day of Golf will be held at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course on June 18, 2015. The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge #1632 has partnered with Sierra at Tahoe, and Harrah’s and Harvey's Casino Resorts t sponsor the event.

Last year the golfers played 130 holes of golf and raised over $12,000 for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer league.

Golfers start at sun-up and play as many holes as they can before sun-down. The golfers take pledges on a per hole basis or a flat dollar donation amount. This year’s goals are to play 130+ holes and raise over $12,000.00.

Lake Tahoe lecture: Family values -Some insights from the rest of life
