Plastic, light and sound pollution focus of movie screening in Lake Tahoe

Event Date:
July 13, 2017 - 5:30pm

Light and sound affect people and wildlife. Find out more when the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science hosts the next TERC talk and movie screening in Lake Tahoe on Thursday, July 13 at 5:30 p.m.

"The Smog of the Sea" will be shown. It is a short film that chronicles a one-week journey through the remote waters of the Sargasso Sea to assess the fate of plastics in the world's oceans. As the crew sieves the water they find a fog of microplastics permeating the world's oceans.

Following the movie screening, Dr. Will Richardson of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) will briefly discuss how excess light and sound can affect people and wildlife. Learn about the impacts of these less-considered forms of pollution on animal species and what can be done to prevent them.

Everyone can learn how to help monitor pollution, local species, and water quality at our local beaches using the Citizen Science Tahoe app.

A signed Jack Johnson CD and Kleen Kanteen products will be raffled off as door prizes to those who attend this fun and engaging event.

This event is sponsored by the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science. Registration is required. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. with refreshments and no-host bar from 5:30 op.m. to 6:00 p.m. The UC Davis Tahoe Science Center is located at 291 Country Club Drive in Incline Village, between between Tahoe Boulevard/SR 28 and Lakeshore Blvd. on the campus of Sierra Nevada College. A $5 suggested donation will be collected at the door.
