Opinion: Funding Tahoe’s transportation system
Submitted by admin on Tue, 11/22/2016 - 9:40amBy now, most people have heard: Federal courts upheld the 2012 Regional Plan for Lake Tahoe, affirming the blueprint that maintains development caps and strengthens environmental protections while encouraging community revitalization, redevelopment, and updated infrastructure.
Capturing the most attention these days is the traffic in our small communities from millions of people who drive up to enjoy our lake. And the transportation system is where TRPA is giving more focused attention to benefit Tahoe’s environment, economy, and quality of life.

Opinion: Uniting towards a sustainable vision for South Shore
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/03/2016 - 9:33amIt is an exciting time to live on the South Shore – during a critical point in our region’s evolution and potential. It is time to set our course: moving away from bickering and blaming, exclusionary special interests and single-industry dominance to consensus-building and proactively choosing progress. Whether we live in Nevada or California, everyone benefits from uniting towards a sustainable vision for the South Shore.
Editorial: Use the election to create a community of collaboration and teamwork
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/31/2016 - 11:22amIn order to be a successful community on the South Shore, the state line needs to become a blur and both sides need to work together. There should be no "us" and "them" but a collective "we."
When travelers come to Lake Tahoe they don't see a state line, or a direction on the compass, they see a beautiful recreational paradise that just a few people are able to call home, but millions can call a vacation destination.
Letter: Overlooking the Obvious - Vote Yes on T
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 10/31/2016 - 3:11amMeasure T is not about the Loop Road. It is about power. If and when there is a Loop Road Plan, there will be components that will need the city’s approval. The two biggies will be accepting the old Hwy 50 as a city street and using eminent domain to tear down many houses. The point here is that the city will be making decisions. Measure T is about who will be making those decisions: A majority of city council, i.e. 3 people, or 9000 voters.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/26/2016 - 3:35pmDear Community,
Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) would like to thank Caesar’s Foundation and Harrah’s & Harvey’s Lake Tahoe for their support. In September the Caesar’s Foundation awarded TCH with a $10,000 grant to operate the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room. Conservancy looks into selling 4 parcels that could benefit the Tahoe Valley Area Plan
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/25/2016 - 10:13pmWhen one sees a vacant lot in the Lake Tahoe Basin with a California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) sign placed on a tree within its borders, it normally that means the parcel will remain vacant.
And in most cases, that is true.
In the basin, CTC owns 4,780 parcels of land totaling 6,400 acres, many of those parcels are about 1/4 acre in size. In the 1980s and 1990s, most of these smaller lots were purchased due to their being deemed environmentally sensitive. If a lot, or a portion of a lot, was once considered to be sensitive, they are permanently protected and cannot be built upon.
Letter: Larry Reilly for LTUSD School Board
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 10/24/2016 - 9:16amI am a resident and registered voter in Nevada, but I work in Meyers, attended Meyers Elementary, grew up in Christmas Valley, and graduated from South Tahoe High School (STHS). The state line is a blur to me because I view the South Shore as one community. I have two children currently in high school, one at Whittell and one at STHS; I also have another child who graduated from Whittell and is now a college freshman. I believe that a good public education system is the great equalizer in America, and that every child has a right to the best education possible.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue promotes three of its own
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/22/2016 - 8:02pmSouth Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has promoted Kim George and Al Martinez to the rank of Captain, and Mike Taormina to the rank of Engineer. All three received their official pins and badges during a ceremony at the Lake Tahoe Airport on Friday.
"When people call us, they're having a bad day," said South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Chief Jeff Meston as he started Friday's ceremony.
Sometimes there are good endings, sometimes not so good and its the captain's job to help get the team back to the station and help them regroup when the outcome of a call isn't a happy one.
Working together on Lake Tahoe's housing issues
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/20/2016 - 3:27pmLike many communities that are highly-desirable places to vacation and live, Lake Tahoe has affordable housing problems. Two recent studies commissioned by the Tahoe Prosperity Center and Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation clearly illustrate the housing challenges our region faces.
Median home prices of more than $500,000 on the North Shore and nearly $400,000 on the South Shore are simply too high for our region’s low wages, putting the cost of home ownership and even rent out of reach for many working people.
Opinion: Why a vote for Measure P is actually a vote for road repairs, snow removal and affordable housing
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/19/2016 - 8:59pmThere are many important issues concerning the Nation, California and South Lake on the November 8th ballot. Not only we will decide on who the next President is but we’ll also be voting in two City Officials, who some could argue will actually have a greater impact on our daily lives than the Nation’s Leader.

What we can learn when celebrities & athletes go head-to-head at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/09/2016 - 6:16pmMaybe there's just no use talking to PGA Tour players about pressure. Their skills exist on an entirely different plateau, and their weekly exposure to seven-figure paychecks and audiences has inured them from experiencing anything like what we mortals feel teeing it up in a club championship. Then again, what's the point of asking cousin Bob—who's a very nice player—for competitive advice when in the grand scheme he's just another loser, too. If you want to learn something valuable about tournament golf, there's really only one place to go: Lake Tahoe in July.

Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/19/2016 - 4:14pmWith the cool fall weather approaching, it’s important to think about a very important vitamin we can absorb from the sun: vitamin D. According to city data, South Lake Tahoe boasts an average of 249 days of sunshine per year so we should all be quite abundant in our vitamin D stores. However, many of us spend hours indoors and nutrition research shows about 40 percent of adults are lacking this vitamin.
Below are some common questions about vitamin D and how to get the most from this important nutrient.
What is vitamin D?

Six-hour stand off ends at Motel 6 in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe Police officers were called to the area Saturday afternoon after a person said a man got into an argument with someone in the parking lot, and that he brandished a handgun, then went into a trailer parked at the motel.
