Column: Simple Ways to Live Happily

I was recently watching the movie Castaway. This time, as I watched, I thought about how it was filmed. As the movie begins, Tom Hanks’ character has a bit of a belly. As the story progresses he becomes thinner and more muscular. I assume the effect was created by filming in reverse; he began as thin and muscular and gained the weight afterward. I began thinking about how easily we can change when we put our minds to it.

Column: Healthy ways to avoid holiday blues

The holiday season can be a happy and joyous time, bringing family and friends together. But for some, it can be a stressful and lonely time, leading to symptoms of depression. When stress is at its peak, unhealthy behaviors, such as drinking alcohol, using drugs, and overeating, tend to take over. Though people use these behaviors to cope and escape difficult emotions, they tend to make things worse.

Barton Health: The tools you need to prevent disease

Health care in the U.S. historically has been focused on treating the symptoms of sickness. The scientific accomplishments in this area are truly astonishing, but despite these advances, the American population as a whole isn’t healthier. In fact, chronic diseases are on the rise.

To combat this in our own community, Barton Health is offering the Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP), a national program proven to improve health and wellness. CHIP is designed to help people reduce their risk for disease through better health habits and lifestyle changes.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but breast cancer is not the only screening women should care about. All women should have an annual health-screening exam. Having an annual health care visit is a great opportunity to take charge of your health. Routine health care visits can help find problems early or prevent health problems before they occur. WWRD? What Would Ricky Do?

Many of us have probably wondered what we would do if we had the money that the Maloffs’ had. Could we be as generous and make as much of as impact as Lisa has? Would we give as freely? Would we scrutinize the pockets of Tahoe that need that extra boost to improve our well-being? Most of us do not know how to answer this. Ricky, however, does; his answer is “yes.”

The leading reason for suicide is unmanaged depression or a mood disorder. Considering that 20 to 25 percent of Americans are affected by depression, it is important to know the signs that may help save someone’s life.
